Allow us to extend our congratulations to Nicholas Allegra. He's more popularly known as Comex, the party responsible for crafting the infamous JailbreakMe and Spirittools that's given Apple so many headaches recently. Starting the week after next, he'll be officially wandering around 1 Infinite Loop as a bona fide intern. We're not terribly surprised, since the skill level needed to give iOS engineers a run for their money can be a highly valuable asset to the company; hiring someone with the know-how to spot vulnerabilities in Apple's OS would only serve to make the platform more secure. It wasn't mentioned how Allegra's talents will be utilized by Apple, but -- given the programmer's extensive history -- we can make a few educated guesses.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/jailbreakme-creator-comex-joins-apple-as-an-intern/

Christopher Williams writes that the success of HP's fire sale in unloading hundreds of thousands of TouchPads at heavily discounted prices may provide clues to other Apple competitors hoping to loosen the iPad's stranglehold on the tablet computing market. The main Google Android tablets, made by Samsung and Motorola, are pitched at around the same price point as the iPad but, put together with all the other Android tablets, it's estimated the iPad outsells them eight to one so 'the problem becomes circular: the user base is too small for app developers to invest in,' writes Williams, 'so users buy an iPad because there are more apps and the user base gets even smaller relative to Apple's.' According to Williams, Android tablet makers must find a way of breaking the cycle to avoid the TouchPad's fate. 'No doubt acutely aware of this is Amazon, which is rumored to be preparing to release an Android tablet this autumn,' writes Williams, adding that Amazon must price their 'iPad killer' at break-even or a loss to succeed. 'Its online retail empire and the Kindle brand mean Amazon has the marketing clout to take on the iPad, but on the evidence of HP's successful TouchPad sell off, the question is whether it has the courage to put its money on the line. August 27th, 2011, 00:00 Posted By: wraggster
Steve Jobs has stepped down from the position of CEO of Apple.
The decision was announced yesterday in an open letter released to the "Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community."
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," Jobs writes. "Unfortunately, that day has come."
Jobs named current COO Tim Cook as his successor, and requested that he be allowed to remain, "Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee."
Cook joined Apple in 1998, and was appointed to COO in 2005. He has been influential in streamlining the company's production processes and supply chain, closing factories and warehouses worldwide to significantly increase its profit margins.
"I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role," Jobs continues.
"I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you."
Since Jobs' return to Apple in 1998 he has been instrumental in its rapid growth, presiding over innovations like the iPod, the iPhone and the App Store, and kick-starting the burgeoning tablet market with the iPad.
Earlier this month, Apple briefly overtook Exxon as the most valuable company in the world. In May, it was named the world's biggest brand.

Mobile gaming network OpenFeint is launching a single sign-on system for social developers on iOS.
OpenFeint's OFUID is intended to replace Apple's UDID, which the company intends to phase out with the introduction of iOS5.
UDID afforded developers a range of benefits, like accessing a user's history, tracking their behaviour, and offering cross promotions. OFUID will carry similar benefits, and remove the need to create proprietary solutions.
"With the deprecation of UDID, social game developers need access to a universal method for identifying and delivering services to their users," said OpenFeint founder and CEO Jason Citron.
"Available to 115 million gamers at launch, OFUID will offer that reach and improve on it by giving users a way to share information with game developers, if they so choose."
OpenFeint will also introduce a supplementary programme that guarantees participating developers 1.5 new installs for every install of Game Channel - an app required for users who wish to enjoy the benefits of the single sign-on.
"Sign-on with OFUID is incredibly flexible and has been designed to reduce sign up friction for games," said added senior vice president of product Ethan Fassett.
"Developers will be able to make sign-on optional at first launch and can display it later if they choose. Game developers will also be able to incentivise the sign-on process, offering users rewards for signing in or setting up accounts."

The iOS version of Telltale's forthcoming Jurassic Park tie-in will be iPad 2 only, a spokesperson for the developer has confirmed to Eurogamer.
While its last release, Back to the Future, squeezed onto the original iPad, you'll need the latest iteration of Apple's tablet to enjoy its next effort.
The developer is "targeting" a 15th November launch for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. The iPad take will follow on a little later and, unlike its big screen counterparts, be an episodic release.
Jurassic Park is the second iOS game this week to be announced as iPad 2-only, following news thatthe forthcoming port of PC puzzler Machinarium won't run on older tech.http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...is-ipad-2-only

You could run entire websites based around nothing but Apple rumours. Indeed, folk actually do.
Picking the wheat from the chaff is a tough task when it comes to Apple, but now global news agency Reuters has come out with what it claims is reliable information about Apple’s 2011 plans for iPhone.
And as has been claimed elsewhere, it looks as if Apple is in fact preparing to launch two new iPhones before the year is out.
The most strategically interesting is the low-cost, 8GB version of the iPhone 4 that Apple will use to try and crack into emerging markets where more traditional manufacturers such as Nokia still dominate.
Apple is believed to already be in talks with Chinese carriers China Mobile and China Telecom about deals to get the handset into the hands of the public in that region.
The device is already at the manufacturing stage in South Korea
It is expected to arrive in September or October alongside its fully-fledged successor, the iPhone 5.
Reuters dismisses reports of a brand new design for the high-spec device, a move that many had claimed due to the rough start iPhone 4 had in its first few weeks on the market.
Instead it says that the handset may actually be an IPhone 4S, as aesthetically it is almost identical to the current model. The only differences are said to be a slightly larger screen and a modified antenna.
A low-price iPhone does indeed represent a change of tack for Apple, which is a company that has always shied away from budget. The biggest company in the world has proved that the public lust for premium is insatiable.
But with developed markets having embraced the iPhone so feverishly, it makes sense for Apple to target emerging markets going forwards.

Watch out AT&T and Verizon, it looks like there's an iPhone 5 hat-trick coming this fall. WSJ is reporting that the Apple smartphone will hit Sprint at the same time as those other two networks, bringing a well-needed boost to the carrier's shares in afternoon trading. We've heard mixed reports about an expected release date, but Wall Street Journal sources "familiar with the matter" are claiming that the phone will ship in mid-October. One source also stated that Sprint will begin carrying the iPhone 4 at the same time -- presumably with a price drop in tow. Adding Sprint's 52 million subscribers to the mix could bring the iPhone within reach of customers currently locked into contracts, family plans or corporate agreements with Sprint, making the move a huge win for both companies.

It is what it sounds like, kids. Logitech, clearly on a tablet accessories tear, just trotted out another toy for the iPad. This time, it's a suction cup joystick that sits on the screen, inviting people to gawk at you while you play Pac Man in Starbucks. As you can see in the photos, this isn't a ball-capped joystick so much as a laptop-style pointing stick masquerading as a retro controller. That nub has a flat, slick surface, and without much of an indentation or textured grip, it's easy for your finger to slip off. It'll go on sale next month for $19.99, an appropriate price for what will most likely be an impulse buy. For now, we've got video of it in action after the break.

With the market flush with hot-selling tablet computers, it shouldn't bowl anyone over to learn that many users are taking the plunge and bringing their devices to the bathroom. According to a new survey published by Staples Advantage, the business-to-business division of Staples Inc., 35% of tablet users copped to using their iPad or other tablets while in the bathroom, while a whopping 78% of tablet users said they used their tablets while lying in bed. And in a data point sure to further damage techies' reputation for social skills, Staples Advantage also reported that 30% of tablet users said they used their tablets while at restaurants.

The NPD Group has published research showing that Android continues to lead the mobile OS market in America.
The data indicates that Android phones represented 52 per cent of units sold in the second quarter of 2011. This shows significant growth over the 36 per cent first quarter market share indicated in a report by Gartner in May.
Apple's iOS grew marginally to 29 per cent, while Blackberry tumbled to 11 per cent, and Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile and webOS remained stagnant with 5 per cent each.
Ross Rubin, NPD's executive director of industry analysis, claims that Google's recent $12.5 billionacquisition of Motorola has "shifted the balance of power" in the patent battle currently playing out in the mobile OS market.
"Android's momentum has made for a large pie that is attractive to Motorola's Android rivals, even if they must compete with their operating system developer," he said.
"Much as it did in the feature phone market in the RAZR era, Motorola is experiencing increased competition from Samsung and LG in the smartphone market. Closer ties to the heart of Android can help inspire new paths to differentiation."
The report also suggests the burgeoning pre-paid smartphone market as a possible area for Android to grow even further.
"This was once a key segment for Motorola that the company has an opportunity to reclaim as prepaid carriers build their smartphone portfolios," Rubin said.

Right, as you may have noticed we have a new universal holder now - we decided to do this as the number of phones now appearing is too many to make custom clamps for them all.
In other news sales are still going crazy and we're planning ahead for Christmas already with 6000 extra units planned on top of the normal production!
We're also considering a coding competition for the iCP - see here: http://boards.openpandora.org/index....231#entry85231

Apparently, the iOS hacking community is not working for the weekend, judging by the two days it took to crack Apple's latest beta wide open. Available as of this morning, the Sn0wbreeze 2.8 Beta 6 unlock tool can now give those of you with developer credentials jailbreak access to iOS 5 beta 6. From the looks of this release, the hack works on most iOS devices with the sole exception of the iPad 2. Already itching to get that custom firmware on your Ive-designed iSlabs? Then hit the source link below, and let us know how things turn out.

Gameloft believes all mobile platforms are created equally (as long as they work 14 hours a day, including weekends) and is putting a stop to iOS release segregation, according to Pocket Gamer. Gameloft plans to release all iOS titles universally, without special HD versions for iPad that can come out months after iPhone installments. In some cases Gameloft is bound by licensing to release a separate iPad version, but overall it will continue to release all games at the same time on both devices, a policy it began with April's Order and Chaos Online.
Gameloft's universal release policy could very well become the norm as developers tweak the finer aspects of iPad HD development, a prospect that makes our game-organization compulsions extremely pleased.

Here’s an Android headphone add-on so clean that most people won’t know you built it yourself. [Will Robertson] was unsatisfied with the stock headphones that came with his HTC phone, but didn’t want to lose the control interface when upgrading. He built this add-on that lets him control the Android music player.
He was inspired to do this after reading about the control interface in one of our previous features. That hack detailed how to add control based on the 4-conductor headphone jack, but didn’t see us through to a clean finished product. [Will] picked up where it left off by designing a sleek surface mount board that hosts a headphone jack and three tactile switches. A patch cable is soldered opposite the jack, making this work as a pass-through device. The icing on the cake is the shrink tubing that masks the fact that this is a diy dongle.
If you want to follow his lead, [Will] posted his EagleCAD design files and footprints for the components he used in the post linked at the top.

If you spent your weekend outside and away from the Internet, you might have missed the massive liquidation of HP TouchPads on Amazon, woot.com, WalMart, and the HP online store. Normally a $100 fully featured tablet is nothing to scoff at, but there is a catch: The HP TouchPad runs WebOS. WebOS is a fine operating system for a tablet, but it’s not Android. The folks at HacknMod.com posted a bounty for the first person to port Android to the HP TouchPad.
HacknMod is offering up $450 for a basic Android port and is looking for sponsors for the WiFi, Audio, Camera, and MultiTouch bounties. There’s a lot of discussion about the port on the XDA Developers and the RootsWiki forums if you’d like to get a bearing on how far along the project is. The TouchPad has already been rooted so there’s your starting point.
We’d like to throw our hat into the ring, but we missed out on the TouchPad fire sale. If anyone knows of an online shop where they’re still available, leave a message in the comments.
