Google has removed a popular software emulator that allows Android users to play illegal copies of SNES games on their handsets from the Android Marketplace.
Pocket Gamer reports that Google said the download “violated the Developer Content policy”. Furthermore, its developer Ex Plus Alpha risks a permanent ban from the portal if it tries to resubmit the app under a different name.
Other emulators to be banned from the Android Marketplace include PSX4Droid (PlayStation), Gensoid (Mega Drive) and N64oid (N64).
Amongst the features included on Snes9x was the ability to play multiplayer games using a Wii Remote or Wii Classic Controller. Of course, the software can still be had directly from the developer’s website.

Two weeks ago the iPhone 4S was unveiled, which didn't sit well with many who were anticipating the iPhone 5.
Now an analyst claims the late Steve Jobs has been involved with the creation of the iPhone 5 from concept to final design, according to Cnet.
In a research note, Ashok Kumar, analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, said the next iPhone "was the last project that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with from concept to final design. For that reason...this product will establish the high water mark for iPhone volumes."

Sales of Future’s UK magazine portfolio have increased by a staggering 750 per cent since the release of Newsstand as part of Apple’s iOS5 last week.
AOP reports that the combined downloads of Future’s 50+ free and premium publications via the Apple store has passed the 2m mark in just four days.
It is not known how many of those customers also chose to subscribe to Future’s magazines.
“Future had sold more digital editions in the past four days through Apple’s Newsstand than in a normal month,” Future CEO Mark Wood stated.
“It’s clear that Newsstand creates an amazing opportunity for publishers – and I’m committed to continue driving our brands through this great new distribution channel.”
The news is a huge boost for the publisher, which just last month hinted at a possible sale of its US operationsas the print magazine market continues to decline.

Japanese developer Level-5 has revealed that a new entry in itsProfessor Layton series - up until now a Nintendo exclusive - will be making its way to iOS.
The game will be called Layton Brothers: Mystery Room and will star Layton's son, Alfendy Layton, not Layton himself. The game will, of course, use the touch screen for navigation and puzzle-solving, and Alfendy will be aided by his assistant, Lucy Grey.
There's no news yet on a western release, though.
The announcement makes Layton the latest in a recent string of surprise console to mobile ports following the release ofScribblenauts Remix on iOS last week and Rockstar's revelationthat Grand Theft Auto III will be coming to iOS and Android.
Yesterday, Namco Bandai announced that it would be publishing Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch, the RPG collaboration between Level-5 and Studio Ghibli, in Europe and North America next year.

"In the latest edition of the Apple vs. Samsung patent fight, the ABC is reporting that Samsung has filed in Australian and Japanese courts seeking an injunction to halt sales of the iPhone 4S for alleged 3G patent violations. It remains to be seen whether Samsung has any better luck with the retaliatory strike in Australian and Japanese courts than it did with courts in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, I expect that Samsung will fail partly because of overseas precedent, but mostly because their patents are sane, technical and narrow in scope (unlike the patent-a-rectangle nature of the opposition). If this stupidity ever stops, then millions of dollars, euro, or Won that are being spent on lawyers might actually go into the innovation that patents are meant to promote. Who knows where that might lead?

Apple sold over four million iPhone 4S in the three days after it hit the market, more than double that of the iPhone 4 in the same period, making it the fastest-selling phone ever.
Over one million people pre-ordered the phone in the 24 hours after it was announced.
More than 25 million customers have also downloaded the new iOS 5 operating system for their Apple handset.
"iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend - the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days," said senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller.
"iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.

Unity Technologies co-founders David Helgason and Nicholas Francis believe that improvements in mobile hardware will soon yield diminishing returns for games.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at Unite 11, Francis, the company's CCO, agreed that mobile technology is approaching the power of the current generation of consoles, but questioned how useful that will be for games.
"If Sony and Microsoft did the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720, they would completely blow mobiles out of the water, and that's good if you want to make those big experiences," said Francis.
"But having something that's much more powerful than an Xbox in my cell-phone? What am I going to do with that? It's a small screen, I'm playing on the bus, everything is shaking, there's light coming in."
"With mobile, I can see a point in making them two or four times as powerful, but after that it's diminishing returns."
Francis also predicted that consoles will survive for one more generation, "and then that will be it."
This will place more emphasis on improving tools: making them more efficient for established developers, and more accessible to aspiring talent.
What doesn't go away is the need for great workflows - the ability to put in a lot of complex content into scenes," added Unity CEO David Helgason. "That may run out at some point, but we can think of so many ways we can improve that experience."
"We have already made it possible for like 10 times more people to approach game tools than before, and there's probably another 10 times more."

Apple has recorded full year profits of $25.9 billion for the financial year, up from $12 billion the previous year. Sales hit $108.2 billion, up from $65.2 billion.
Sales of the iPad were up 166 per cent in the fourth quarter ended September 24 to 11.12 million units, while the iPhone sold a further 17.07 million units, up 21 per cent.
Fourth quarter revenues were $28.27 billion with profits at $6.62 billion, compared to $20.34 billion and $4.21 billion the previous year.
The company sold 4.89 million Macs, up 26 per cent of the 2010 quarter, and 6.62 million iPods, down 27 per cent on last year.
"We are thrilled with the very strong finish of an outstanding fiscal 2011, growing annual revenue to $108 billion and growing earnings to $26 billion," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.
"Customer response to iPhone 4S has been fantastic, we have strong momentum going into the holiday season, and we remain really enthusiastic about our product pipeline."
"We are extremely pleased with our record September quarter revenue and earnings and with cash generation of $5.4 billion during the quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO.
For the current quarter in which it launched the iPhone 4S, Apple expects revenues of $37 billion and projected earnings of $9.30 per share.
Despite the high numbers, analysts were expecting higher shipments of hardware during the fourth quarter, including an expected 20 million iPhone sales. Oppenheimer addressed this in a call to investors following the results, saying the company expected lower sales due to rumours of a new model.
Tim Cook told investors he was confident the company will set a new record for iPhone sales in the current quarter.

How did you spend your weekend? If you're Apple, the answer is simple, really: selling a whole lot of iPhones. Cupertino this morning announced that iPhone 4S sales have reached four million -- quite an impressive number compared to what its predecessor was capable of, a fact no doubt helped by the addition of some carriers, like Verizon and Sprint here in the States. The handset is currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK, with plenty more countries coming by the end of the year. Press info can be found after the jump.

If you're among the teeming masses holding a brand new iPhone 4S in your hands, you may be surprised (as we were) to find there's something conspicuously absent from the Network Settings menu on your new device: specifically the ability to manually shut off 3G data. After receiving word, and a screenshot, from a helpful tipster, rocking a 4S on Vodafone's network, we found the same option missing from our own AT&T iteration. Of course this isn't the sort of thing that's likely to have an impact on most users, but if you're the type that likes to squeeze every last bit of juice out of that Apple, the omission could cause some frustration. We gave Apple support a call to see what they had to say, and were told AppleCare has no official response on the matter. If you're lamenting the loss of the 3G flip-switch sound off in the comments below.
Update: A few of our readers are reporting that the original Verizon iPhone 4 also lacked the 3G switch, which means the absence is most likely on a carrier-by-carrier basis.

You didn't think the latest iPhone would be saved from Colorware's paint-dipped hands, did you?
Lo and behold, the company's swatches are currently ready for application on the 4S. Similar to itsiPhone 4 treatments, you'll be able to spice up your device -- and its earbuds -- with a mixture of glossy, metallic and soft-touch coatings (excluding mainly the front face, which remains stock black or white). Colorware'll gladly sell you a fresh 16 or 64GB model for a whopping $1,500 or $1,700, respectively, or you can mail yours in to get a Benetton-esque makeover for just $250.

If you've unboxed a shiny new iPhone 4S from AT&T today, you've most likely had an experience similar to many others who made the same purchase: frustration. It seems that the surge in activity from the release of Apple's new handset has reduced activation traffic on Ma Bell's network to a crawl. This isn't the first time the carrier has had issues on launch day -- but back then, it didn't have any competition. Now that Verizon and Sprint have joined the iPhone party, the pressure's on and AT&T's not looking good compared to the other carriers who don't appear to be having issues. As if that weren't enough for the folks in Cupertino, iCloud had a rocky debut this week as well -- from absent verification emails to an inability to backup data. Apple has documented all five of the new service's foibles via the coverage link below, but it appears everything's been peachy since early this morning. So, have you been waiting for your new iPhone to be more than a shiny new paperweight? Leave a comment, and let us know.

yesakmac joins the teeming hordes of successful Slashdot submitters, with this excerpt from PC World that says the frenziedeffort to port Android to HP's discontinued TouchPad has actually succeeded:"CyanogenMod also released a 'lower your expectations edition' release guide to let you know exactly what is working (or not) under the hood. Modders will be happy to know that basically all the TouchPad's guts are recognized. It supports dual-booting and fake SD cards in case you need to restore the TouchPad. What does not work, though, is the camera, which can only be used for video chat. Power efficiency is still an issue, too. As for the final build, CyanogenMod says they won't be giving a hard date, and that it will be ready when it is ready."

"AT&T is adopting technology that gives a person with an Android device two user profiles, enabling company email and other data to reside in an encrypted partition separate from a user's apps, games and unfettered web browsing. AT&T is calling the feature Toggle, and plans to release it later this year. Toggle is a regular app that, once installed, creates its own encrypted desktop under the control of company IT bosses. Toggle is a rebranding of an app developed by startupEnterproid, which continues to develop its own version. AT&T think this move will encourage smartphone adoption in the enterprise. Interestingly, Apple's current version of iOS and app guidelines exclude multiple profiles on one device."
