Mobile hardware specialist retailer Clove has kicked off a promotion which offers a Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone with a 40-day trial period where the phone can be returned for any reason.
In what is likely a Nokia and/or Microsoft supported scheme, the retailer priced the new Nokia smartphone at £399 bought outright. Black and Cyan versions are available.
If registering the phone within 10 days, customers can return the device up to 30 days after the registration (hence the 40 days maximum) if they find the handset or Windows Phone is not for them.
The Lumia 800 has been hailed as a particularly well made smartphone and shipping with the latest Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango', it seems a pretty reasonable offer if the curious are willing to stump up in advance to give Windows Phone a try for themselves.

Shows like Sherlock, Frozen Planet and Top Gear boosted viewing and listening across all formats to 1.94bn.
The BBC's catch-up TV service is available for a series of devices including PCs, TVs, smartphones, tablets and games consoles.
However, while the platform receives most viewing via PCs, the additional devices experienced a ten per cent viewing growth, while iPad viewing grew by 596 per cent.
Last year 1.94 billion programmes were watched and listened to on iPlayer in total and 187 million were viewed in December alone.
The most popular shows over Christmas were Top Gear, Frozen Planet, EastEnders and last but not least, Sherlock, which broke records to achieve 623,000 views in a single day.
Daniel Danker, general manager for programmes and on demand, BBC, said: "While 2011 was a remarkable year for BBC iPlayer across the board, the real story was growth of iPlayer on TVs, mobile phones, and tablets, outpacing PC growth many times over.

But we're talking about all users of any kind of connected device.
Retail analyst Zmags defined its target consumer as one that owns devices such as smartphones and tablets, connects to social networks and shops via gadgets.
Thus, 52 per cent of connected consumers are 40-something year old women with an average household income of $63,000, and 43 per cent own smartphones, while 16 per cent own tablets.
This is clearly a much wider group than the self-selecting sample that uses apps.
Which may be why the report found that, across all demographics, 87 per cent prefer shopping via websites and mobile sites, compared to just four per cent that like to use mobile apps.
Further results show 87 per cent of tablet owners did their holiday shopping via their device, spending an average of $325 each and 49 per cent expect to more on their tablet over the next year.

If you're looking for some exergaming action, but don't have the rhythm -- or lack of self awareness -- for some existing sportgameaccesories, how about a game controlled by effort? Using your iDevice's camera and accelerometer, BitGym has created a control system for playing iOS games while on your exercise equipment of choice (possibly not the trampoline though). The first release is a racer that converts rate of exercise to acceleration and head movement to steering. We're told there's an SDK too, so developers looking to trim-up can make their own gym-distractions. Fit Freeway is available now, but if you want to see it in action, without breaking a sweat jog on over the break for a demo video.

Confirming rumours that have been circulating for a few weeks now,Bloomberg is reporting that Apple's iPad 3 will be released worldwide in March.
The tablet is said to include an iPhone 4 style high-definition 'Retina' screen, which uses a pixel density to high that the human eye is supposedly unable to distinguish them. Sources point to a resolution beyond 1080p.
It will also include a quad-core processor. Twin-core processors are just now becoming common in smartphone and tablet devices, but a quad-core CPU would provide a significant performance boost.
A third rumoured feature is compatibility with the new LTE wireless 3G standard that provides high-speed data access on compatible mobile phone networks. The tech is about to be rolled out by Verizon and ATT in the US and is already supported by a number of handsets released by Samsung and Nokia.
The news agency reports that mass production began at the beginning of Janaury at China's Foxconn plant.

Device depth is also expected to get trimmed.
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says the successor to the iPhone 4S is likely to be ready for production by the end of Q2 in order to receive a Q3 release later this year, which will be dependent on market competition nearer the time.
Huberty claims Apple is considering a new device casing and touch panel tech in order to make the device depth slimmer than the current 0.37-inches of the 4S.
She also believes it will feature a Qualcomm quad-mode chip to enable both 3G and LTE use for all network types.
The report also highlights a svelte iPad 3 in the works, which is expected to come with thinner frame and a higher quality display than the iPad 2. Production is expected to begin at the end of Q1, according to the report.
In the report, Huberty says: "What is clear about iPhone 5 is that Apple and its supply chain are positively surprised by the demand for iPhone 4S, which increases confidence in strong sales for iPhone 5 later this year. Overall, the supply chain looks for stronger than market growth for both the iPhone and the iPad."

Almost a quarter of workers have the Apple tablet provided by their company.
Tech researcher IDG Connect International says while work-based iPad use is popular, 54 per cent always use their device at home.
However, for the Middle East and Africa, 70 per cent use the devices at work and, which falls to less than half for home-based activity.
47 per cent of workers in Africa have received an iPad from their employer, while that number falls to 40 per cent across Europe.
Kathryn Cave, editor at IDG Connect International, said: "This research shows the tablet is fast becoming a true work device, provided by employers and used in the office for business communication. It also highlights some startling regional variations, emphasising the need for marketers to adapt content to local markets as well as new mediums."
Further figures from IDG demonstrate that 97 per cent of professionals use the iPad for reading, 72 per cent of iPad owners carry their laptop less and 70 per cent now buy less books and newspapers, preferring to opt for electronic options.

Silver medal goes to Amazon with 8.4.
Customer experience analyst ForeSee examined consumer attitudes to m-commerce on apps and websites, and saw Apple and Amazon bag the top spots.
Dell came in third with 7.8 points, Netflix and eBay were joined in fourth position on 7.7 points, while the top five with completed with BestBuy and Staples on 7.6 points.
Larry Freed, president and CEO of ForeSee, said: "As the adoption of smartphones increases, more consumers are using them to access retailer websites. More and more, there is expectation that companies will address the mobile environment in ways that are effective and user-friendly. Mobile commerce is still relatively new and there is a lot of room for innovation and improvement.
"The smartphone is a powerful shopping tool and a double-edged sword. Consumers will use it to research products and check a retailer's own site while they're in the store, but they'll also use it to compare prices and check out the competition.
"The gap between mobile experience and web experience is an opportunity for retailers as much as it is a liability. We know consumer expectations will only continue to grow, and right now Amazon and Apple are setting a very high bar."

Soul Calibur will arrive on the iOS App Store on January 19, and it looks mint.
The iOS version is a port of the Dreamcast game with all 19 characters present and correct. It also includes a nice selection of modes: Arcade Battle, Time Attack, Survival, Extra Survival, Practice and Museum modes, and support for Game Center Leaderboards.
There's no word on price, but who cares? It'll probably be cheap and as Street Fighter IV showed, fighters work surprisingly well on the touch screen (if you don't take things too seriously).

Apple says it's suspending iPhone 4S sales in mainland China following the violence we reported earlier, in which angry customers threw eggs at the company's flagship store in Beijing. The crowd had queued in freezing temperatures to purchase the newly-arrived 4S, but were subsequently told the store would not be opening for business -- hence their angry response. It seems that many in the mob weren't normal consumers, but were workers put in place by resellers who wanted to buy up devices and sell them on at a profit. There was similar disorder when the iPad 2 went on sale in China, and now an Apple spokesperson has said the risk to its staff is too great, forcing it to halt 4S sales "for the time being."

On one hand, it's just another iPad rumor. On the other, there's an interesting wrinkle here that hasn't been confirmed -- let alone talked about seriously -- in past reports. Bloomberg is reporting that the iPad 3 will go on sale as early as March, boasting a higher-resolution screen, a speedier processor and support for "next-generation wireless networks." According to the all-common "unnamed sources," the outfit's manufacturing partners are purportedly "ramping up production" of the device this month, with full volume to be hit by February. Within, you'll supposedly find a quad-core chip and support for LTE, but it's unclear whether or not both AT&T and Verizon's 4G networks will be supported.
As it stands, the iPad 2 can be purchased with a Verizon 3G or AT&T 3G module within, and we highly doubt Apple would prefer to launch the next iPad with LTE support on just one or the other. Moreover, the solidification of LTE within the iPad is the best confirmation yet that the wireless spec will also be a part of the iPhone 5; granted, that's far from written in stone, but if Apple has managed to get battery life to a comfortable place, there's no reason to not give prospective buyers an avenue to hop on the fastermobile superhighway.

January 14th, 2012, 00:08 Posted By: wraggster
Research company Morgan Stanley claims the Finnish firm is on course to see widespread adoption of it's newly embraced Microsoft OS which was launched in Q4 2011.
The Lumia 800 is Nokia's pioneer Windows Phone and it's estimated to have shipped one million units during the fourth quarter. This passes earlier analyst predictions, which expected movements of just 500,000 devices.
The report says Nokia will ship 37 million Windows Phones and 40 million Symbian smartphones, which provides a sharp decline from the 76 million units the latter OS had shipped in 2011.
Further results estimate that the tide will turn even more in 2013 as 64 million WinPho devices are poised for shipment, reducing Symbian smartphones to just 16 million units.
Nokia may be pleased to hear praise for its shipment volumes despite being plagued with rumours. The most recent involved the firm selling it's smartphone arm to Microsoft, though it's unlikely given the potential profits to be generated from sales in the near future.

Certain Affinity's Age of Booty can rekindle your passion for the pirate-themed, real-time strategy/board game with an upcoming iPhone, iPad and Android interpretation. The company announced this afternoon that an "all-new version" of the game is in the works, being developed with Chaotic Moon.
This new Booty will include a single-player campaign, along with real-time multiplayer and cross-platform support. There's currently no announced release date.
The console version of Age of Booty was sent out to die in the holiday fray of 2008, becoming a tale of woe for those who'd dare set sale with a downloadable title near the end of the year.

With so many of us performing funeral dirges in honor of webOS it's easy to forget that the tablet and smartphone platform is still officially supported HP. In fact, just today, the company issued yet another incremental update -- pushing TouchPads to version 3.0.5, while Pre 2 and Pre 3 handsets are moving on up to 2.2.4. Both form factors will be getting improvements in calendar and messaging, while the Pre2 gets better Skype support and MAP for Bluetooth. TouchPads are also adding support for HTTP live streaming and bringing the time-saving "double space equals period" typing shortcut to the table. For a complete change log and to download the SDK check out the source link.

Nope, that's not a typo -- we just got our hands on a $79 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. The folks from MIPS popped by the Engadget stage to talk about the budget device. The Ainovo Nova7 Paladin is available now in China, so if you actually want to get your hands on the thing here in the US, it will likely cost you a bit more when you actually factor in, you know, air fare and such, but the company assures us that something along the same lines ought to be coming to the States in the near future, with a similar price point.
As expected, this isn't the sexiest tablet we've seen on the show floor -- you're not getting a Galaxy Tab here -- but the build quality is quite solid. The seven-inch screen is 800 x 480 -- again, not high-end specs we're dealing with, but it does the trick for casual gaming and YouTube videos, and the MIPS folks mention to us plans to bump up the res for a US release. Along the top of the device, you'll find three buttons: power, back and menu -- the placement on the latter two are a bit counterintuitive when first picking up the tablet, but you'll get used to it pretty quickly. Along the right side, you'll find a headphone jack, miniUSB port (yes, mini), volume buttons and a microSD slot for expanding the already decent 8GB of storage.
Inside you'll find that MIPS-based 1GHz single core processor and 512MB of RAM -- again, not the greatest, but it should get the job done for most the paces you'd expect to put a $79 tablet through. There's no cameras or GPS on the thing, though we didn't really miss either one. If you're looking for something that can do video and stills, however, $20 more will get you the $99 Novo7 basic.
