NASA is exploring the strange new world of social and mobile gaming, with two new game apps designed to educate about math, flight, and the history of space exploration.
Sector 33 for iOS is an air traffic control simulator, in which players manage the speed and route of up to five planes coming into San Francisco from the east. Instead of the breezy gameplay of Flight Control, you have to deal with actual wind and other real-life complications.
Space Race Blast Off is a virtual game show on Facebook in which players compete to answer space-related trivia for points, in categories including "technology," "astronauts," and "math." Go learn something!

If you'll recall, it was April of last year when we reported on pictures from Apple.pro, which claimed to show a seventh-generation iPod Nano chassis with room for a camera. Not long after, the site posted asecond leak of the device, hinting at the omission of the Nano's famous clip in favor of optics. Fast forward to the present, and we're now looking another supposed shot of the unit, however, this time the clip is back and it's made room for the shooter. Like prior Nano-camera efforts, this prototype's loaded with a less-than-whopping 1.3-megapixels of resolution, which M.I.C Gadget claims in its non-final form, took overexposed photos. Apple's apparently also been toying with 2-megapixel prototypes, but those too were apparently deemed unsatisfactory. M.I.C. Gadget also muses the two month old prototype is nearing release, and that it could be released before the traditional fall schedule. Seeing as the Nano's long overdue for a hardware refresh, we'd file that under definitively maybe, but before believing, take copious amounts of salt as you hit the source link below for a bevy of pics.

Software update enables app 'repackaging' for beleaguered BlackBerry tablet.
Last summer RIM confirmed its QNX tools would enable BlackBerry OS devices to run Android apps, and that the PlayBook would support the this feature as soon as a software update was released.
Now, that appears to be imminent. The PlayBook OS 2.0 upgrade will feature 'BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps', which allows developers with existing Android creations to repackage them for the PlayBook and the unreleased BlackBerry 10 OS.
James from the RIM developer relations team, blogged: "Seeing the great response for the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps at CES, developer meet-ups and conferences that we’ve attended over the last few months, we’re expecting a huge interest in the consumer space for these apps when the update is made available."
The OS update will reportedly support thousands of new apps, advanced integrated email and better tablet-to-smartphone synergy.
It's great news for the BlackBerry tablet, which hasn't had a good start. PlayBook experienced shocking sales, which declined quarter-on-quarter during its debut in 2011. Embarrassingly, the firm also had 5,000 units stolenjust before Christmas.

One of video gaming's earliest hits has returned as an iOS game. Sea Wolf, a 1976 arcade game by Midway, has been updated for release on the App Store by Coastal Amusements, based on its own arcade revival. In the transition, the graphics for the submarine combat simulator have been subject to obvious improvements, but the awesome periscope interface has been sacrificed to portability.
That said, the full game is only $1.99 (a lite version is also available), so if you want to go buy a toy periscope and figure out a way to attach it to your iPhone to play this, your investment is still going to be pretty low.

The iOS version of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, which came out in Japan in December 2010, is finally coming out worldwide. Capcom gave the DS version a year to sell (or not), but the English-language version of the game has already appeared on the New Zealand App Store, typically the first sign of a worldwide release over the course of the next day.
Like the Japanese release, this version of Ghost Trick is somewhat episodic. The first two chapters of the supernatural mystery puzzle adventure game (phew) are free, with the rest of the game available as in-app purchases. We had no problem recommending a purchase of the full game on DS; it's even easier for us to command you to try it for free.

Rollout will begin on the "most popular" Samsung and HTC phones.
Yesterday, we reported that BBC iPlayer will make its debut on Sky later on this year in an attempt to fend off rivals such as Virgin, LoveFilm and new UK arrival Netflix.
Now, Sky says its Sky Go mobile streaming platform, which is only available to its customers on iOS devices, will be unleashed on the Android OS by the end of February.
The rollout will begin with "the most popular Samsung and HTC handsets", according to the firm's online help centre.
Users of the Android app will initially have access to the five Sky Sports channels, ESPN, Sky News and 11 Sky Movies channels (dependent on their package), while new additions Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts 1 will also be launched in the next month.
Holly Knill, head of Sky Go, said: "Sky Go is all about helping more people watch the TV they love wherever and whenever it suits them, so I'm delighted to announce the roll out of Sky Go to Android.

Leak describes the new device as like the 900 but with a better camera.
Dutch retailers Typhone listed the phone for a Euro launch at some point in 2012, describing the device as having a 4.3-inch screen, 1.4GHz CPU and a ClearBlack AMOLED touchscreen.
That sounds pretty much like the US-launched 900, but this one also has a 12MP Carl Zeiss lens camera, rather than the 8MP camera on existing handsets.
The Nokia 900 is available on AT&T and is optimised for its high speed LTE networks, which is currently live in 26 US cities.
Few will be surprised at the news, given Nokia utter determination to make Lumia a success. So far, the verdict is open. Yes, Nokia has sold 1m devices, but it's also been alleged that WinPho has yet to achieve a two per cent share in any major market.

Analyst ups his quarterly forecast by a million.
Amazon has failed to disclose any sales figures for its big hardware launch to date.
That's left the gap open for analysts to fill.
Which is just what Stifel Nicolaus's Jordan Rohan has done. And he's impressed, raising his 4Q projection from 5m to 6m this weekend.
“Kindle Fire has staked out an important market position due to its loyal Amazon customer base and attractive (low) device pricing,” he said in a note spotted by AllThingsD.
“We believe the lower hardware price will correlate with high e-book and video content attach rates.”

Steven Elop of Nokia has placed some of the blame for the struggles of Windows Phone on mobile phone shops — for not pushing it. As The Register points out, sales staff 'want their commission,' and tend to only show phones they think might sell. Exact details of Windows Phone sales numbers are being covered up by both Microsoft and Nokia, who refuse to state specifics; sales figures to operators are stated at one million, but the majority of those seem to be unsold to consumers, and neither Microsoft nor Nokia will give numbers on activations. The best available numbers seem to be maximum Lumia sales estimates from Tomi Ahonen, a former Nokia Executive and the only analyst to correctly predict Nokia's market share fall for the end of 2011. Nokia's Lumia sold around 600,000 phones in 2011 (again, including the large portion in warehouses). One of the worst signs for WP8 is that Nokia's N9 — despite being crippled without marketing, and often selling at full price compared to the almost fully subsidized Lumia phones — is selling better than Nokia's Windows phones, with 1.5M or more phones reaching end users. Interestingly, if the Nokia N9 had been available in all markets, it might have sold almost 5M units and pushed Nokia into profitability.

In October, we reported that more than a quarter of UK tablet owners had a penchant for using their device whilst going to the toilet.
Now, US-based marketing agency 11mark claims three-quarters of Americans don't enter the bathroom without their mobile phone as 74 per cent of men have used their handset in the loo, while women lead with 76 per cent.
However, results show that men regard the toilet as a substitute office as one-fifth have participated in work-related calls, compared to 13 per cent of females.
The report says that 63 per cent have taken a phone call, compared to 41 per cent that have initiated a phone call, while 67 per cent have read a text and 38 per cent have surfed the web.
Nicole Burdette, principal, 11mark, said: "The writing is on the stall. This study confirms what we all know -- that the last private place is no longer private. And, that the 'mobile-everywhere' phenomenon is flushing out a host of new opportunities for savvy communicators."

The Guardian reports that Apple's image is taking a dive after revelations in the NY Times about working conditions in the factories of some of its network of Chinese suppliers and the dreaded word 'boycott' has started to appear in media coverage of Apple's activities. 'Should consumers boycott Apple?' asked a column in the Los Angeles Times as it recounted details of the bad PR fallout amid detailed allegations that workers at Foxconn suffered in conditions that resembled a modern version of bonded labor, working obscenely long shifts in unhealthy conditions with few of the labor rights that workers in the west would take for granted."

The BBC has launched a tablet version of the public broadcaster's popular news app for Android smartphones with an international version available soon.
The Android BBC News app has been downloaded more than three million times since it arrived last year but the latest version has an optimised layout for larger tablet devices, with 7.1-inch mini tablets sticking to the smartphone layout.
"Growing numbers of people are accessing BBC News on mobiles and tablets," said the Beeb's mobile news chief Kate Milner in ablog post announcing the new version.
"In an average week, the BBC News sites and apps are visited by around 9.7m users worldwide on mobile and tablet devices. That represents about 26% of the total," Milner added.
The Beeb will be working on more mobile and tablet improvements over the year.

That's over a quarter of the country's smartphone owners.
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty issued a note to investors predicting that Apple will make its iPhone available through China Telecom and China Mobile in the next year.
That would make it available on all three networks (it's with China Unicom already), and could add an extra 26m sales in 2013 to bring the total to 40m.
She reckons Apple would only reach ten per cent of the 150 million "high-end Chinese subscribers" on one network.
China Mobile alone has an estimated 120 million customers who pay more than 100RMB ($16) a month.
Morgan Stanley expects the next-generation iPhone to arrive in the third quarter of 2012 and a China Mobile iPhone launch to occur in late 2012 or early 2013.

Reduced 3GS models helped to boost Apple's stronghold.
Last week, we reported that Apple had wrestled its world's biggest smartphone maker title back from Samsung thanks to its sales in the fourth quarter, following the Korean firm's domination in Q3.
UK-based analyst Juniper Research says iPhones accounted for almost a quarter of the 149 million smartphones shipped worldwide in Q4.
Four million iPhone 4Ss were sold during its release weekend. However, Apple's continued rollout and push of the 3GS model at a lowered price supported its rise to become number one by fending off cheaper Samsung options, according to the report.
While Samsung may have been knocked into second place for the Q4, results show that the phone maker has increased its market share fourfold from 4.7 per cent in Q1 2010 to reach 21.7 per cent.
Daniel Ashdown, research analyst, Juniper Research, said: "The scale of Samsung's product range is saturating the market. Apple has had to counter Samsung's products like the Galaxy Ace in order to maintain the visibility of its brand."

The Beeb recently secured its highest ever mobile viewing figures at Christmas, landing a 596 per cent rise on iPad viewing and a total of 1.94 billion programmes viewed across the entire service.
Now, the BBC is introducing its on-demand platform to Sky later this year, which will arrive in up to five million homes.
Of course, BBC iPlayer is already a fixture on rival digital platform Virgin Media and Sky will be hoping the new partnership will be able to be as successful.
Mark Thompson, director general, BBC, said: "Having the BBC and Sky work together to further build on the BBC iPlayer success story can only be fantastic news for audiences.
"Making BBC iPlayer available on all platforms is key to our commitment to universal access and this agreement takes us one step further towards that goal. I'm delighted to take this first step on a story of innovation for both organisations."

RIM has had a turbulent year and that's putting it mildly. The firm has had rumour after rumour thrown against it, with some proving to be true and others the work of fiction writers.
The latest development in the RIM soap opera was the revelation that its co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie would step down tomake room for COO Thorsten Heins to bring the company on track.
However, RIM has no worries in the UK market as BlackBerry averaged at 27.7 per cent of smartphone sales, according to researcher GfK.
The report says that there are now over 8.5 million BlackBerry users in Britain following 26.3 per cent of sales during December 2011.
This marks the second year running that the phone maker has held the UK's top spot, while the global user base is now at 35 per cent with 75 million subscribers, according to the results.
