Earlier this week, Kogeto announced plans to bring its Dot panoramic video recording accessory to Android handsets. Having already launched an iPhone version of the device back in May, Kogeto has a prototype of its Android counterpart on display here at CES, along with a second prototype, for theGoPro HD Hero 2. The idea behind the device is pretty simple: just download Kogeto's app, attach the holster to your smartphone, and begin recording. The accessory will then automatically capture 360-degree panoramic video, which can then be uploaded to the web, via the company's dedicated web platform. While you're there, you can also use Kogeto's online editing tool to cut and splice your video, jumping from angle to angle with the company's intuitive user interface. The quality of the video we captured during our hands-on with an iPhone 4 version wasn't exactly top-notch, but we're told that there are notable improvements for 4S users. All told, it's definitely a cool little attachment, and one that seems rife with creative potential. The iPhone 4 version, as we mentioned earlier this year, retails for $79. The Android rendition, meanwhile, is slated to hit the market this fall, likely for a similar price. No word yet on when we can expect to see the Dot arrive for GoPro, but be sure to check out our full gallery and video, after the break.

"Eric Schmidt took issue with the idea that the Android mobile operating system is fragmented, arguing that it's a differentiation between devices rather than a fragmentation. The difference, as he explains it, is that differentiation means manufacturers have a choice, they're going to compete on their view of innovation, and try to convince consumers that their innovation is better than somebody elses whereas fragmentation is quite the opposite. Not surprisingly, some company analysts beg to differ, pointing out the ever increasing incompatibilities between OS and apps across different Android devices and other problems with Android."

51 per cent of the broken device owners claim it still 'works fine.'
In addition to the two-fifths of Britons that are using iPhones with broken screens, promotions site MyVoucherCodes says 57 per cent have had a cracked iPhone screen at some stage of their ownership.
When asked why they continued to use a broken iPhone, more than half said the device 'worked fine', while 32 per cent didn't want to 'claim on insurance' for the damage, according to the report.
Whether this demonstrates the clumsiness of UK phone owners or perhaps the construction of the iPhone, 27 per cent said they had damaged the device within a month of having it. Additionally, most broke the handset within a period of one to three months.
Further results show consumer thoughts to protection through phone cases and screen covers are a pretty even divide. 45 per cent of iPhone owners said yes to using them, while 41 per cent said no, as 14 per cent said they did sometimes.
Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: "As gadgets and technology have advanced, so have the price tags that come with them. Unfortunately, more expensive gadgets inevitably mean more expensive fixes when they are broken, so we really wanted to look into how people take care of their expensive consumer gadgets; particularly iPhones, given their current popularity.

Following gossip of Nokia moving its HQ from Finland, the phone maker finds itself at the centre of yet another web rumour, which has caused Nokia CEO Stephen Elop to voice his frustrations.
In light of Nokia selecting Microsoft's Windows Phone OS to power future devices, Russian mobile blogger Eldar Murtazin claims Microsoft is going to buy Nokia's smartphone arm.
He claims Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer were finalising the deal at the CES event in Las Vegas, which would see the Nokia boss leave the company.
In an interview with PCMag, Elop responded to the claims, saying: "As we've described it before, the rumours are baseless, and some people who seem to enjoy generating rumors are running out of fresh material, so it seems to have come up again. I have nothing else to say."

Boys in blue use 'Find My iPhone' to locate robbers.
Police officers from a station in Havering, Greater London responded to an emergency call from a 15-year-old that had his iPhone stolen.
During questioning of the victim, the officers found that he had downloaded the 'Find My iPhone' app.
Upon registration, the app, which is also compatible with iPad and iPod Touch allows the user to locate the device on a map. Once located, the user can remotely lock the device or erase all content from it.
PCs Nicholas Tunge and Pete Stallard proceed to log into the system and track the stolen phone to an address in neighbouring Dagenham where two suspects were identified and arrested.
Insp. Cowley the Duty Officer, said: "This was a fantastic piece of policing using the very latest modern technology. The victim had suffered a nasty crime but was pleased with the service that my officers provided. I am immensely proud of their work."

Some kind of push into education has been rumoured for Apple since Steve Jobs died, and various observers have discussed the legacy he was planning for himself (the other is a big attack on the TV space).
Now, the company has sent invitations to reporters for an event on Wednesday January 19th at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
"Join us for an education announcement in the Big Apple,” the invitation says - in chalk.
It's not the hardware launch many were hoping for - or it could be, given Apple's capacity for surprises - but it could still represent a significant new direction for the firm.
God knows how it will work given the national and local variations in curricula, but there's no doubt the world's teachers will be paying attention.

T-Mobile's now the lone national player in the US telecom market that hasn't enjoyed the success of the iPhone, and we've heard on several occasions that its top brass isn't oblivious to the effect that its exclusion from Apple's graces has had on the company, going as far to say that the ball is ultimately "in Apple's court." But in a recent interview, it sounds as though T-Mo CTO Neville Ray has seen some of Apple's roadmap, and the next chipset -- the one that ideally would be included in the next iteration of the iPhone -- will be offering support for Magenta's AWS radio. If true, we'd certainly expect the carrier's bad fortunes to turn around... unless Apple chooses to keep T-Mobile out of its club regardless, which Ray mentioned was a distant possibility. If LTE is also included, the fourth-largest US carrier will still be a bit behind by simply not having the next-gen network connectivity -- although Ray did specify that it isn't impossible to deploy LTE in certain areas by repurposing spectrum -- but we have a feeling there will be plenty of people willing to forego that bullet point on the spec list in order to get their hands on an iPhone with genuine T-Mobile HSPA+ support.

While the majority of the tech industry prepares to go all in on this week's CES madness, a certain Mr. Ben Heck's been busying himself with an homage to the Vegas event. In the spirit of consumer electronics, he's gone ahead and retrofitted a gamepad enclosure to Apple's iPhone. Using a modified circuit board taken from an iCade, Heck was able to craft a plastic enclosure and buttons, made with a 3D printer, to neatly surround the device and borrowed silicon. Click on past the break to watch Ben walkthrough what he does best, which is to say, not gaming.

Wikipad's promise of a touchscreen, dual-analog gaming controls and glasses-free display meant we were itching to get our gaming fingers on it. Heck, on paper that's the illegitimate love child of the Vita and the 3DS. Fortunately, we managed to bump into the tablet on the CES show floor. It turns out the tablet is quite a svelte thing once you unshackle it from the game controls. With a soft-touch backing, the eight-inch tablet hits the sweet spot size-wise, with a glasses-free 3D display that was able to show off the entirety of Avatar. Otherwise, it's Ice Cream Sandwich as normal. We're going to shrug off the OS sluggishness here to prototype teething, but it's something that we hope disappears in the finished product.
Sadly, there's a bit of a major problem tackling a hands-on with this thing -- and it's not the Gamegear-trouncing size of the thing; the gaming controls weren't functioning with any games on the device we had. While the Sonic CD app icon on the Android desktop piqued our interest, it wasn't installed and we were then told that the controls weren't currently working with games. Menu navigation was possible, and the digital inputs were responsive, but a little shaky. The pair of analog sticks feel about right, though obviously we need to see some in-game responsiveness before we pass proper judgement. The device is set to launch during Spring, so hopefully they'll get the gaming side sorted soon. Expect a more in-depth hands-on when there's more to play around with.

Its no secret that many musicians use their iPhones and iPads to help them craft their tunes, and go-anywhere podcasting holds great appeal for many others. To serve such folks, IK Multimedia has unveiled three new peripherals joining the likes of its AmpliTube adapter and iMic accessories: the iRig MIC Cast, iRig MIX, and iRig Stomp. The MIC Cast is a unidirectional mic aimed at mobile podcasters that hooks up to your iOS device through its headphone jack (and has a 3.5mm port for headphone monitoring). It has a compact form factor that matches the iPhones slimness, and comes with recording and voice processing apps to get things sounding just right. Look for it Q1 of this year for €29.99 ($38).
Next up is the iRig Stomp, an electric guitar pedal crafted from aluminum that works with any iOS guitar, amp or instrument app. It connects to your iDevice's 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with a free AmpliTude app for adding effects and will cost €44.99 ($58) when it lands in Q2. Lastly, there's the dual-channel iRig MIX mobile music mixer, which can be connected to iDevices, CD players or other music sources using it's stereo inputs. It's got gain, bass, treble and volume controls along with a channel crossfader to tailor your tunes using the included apps: DJ Rig, AmpliTube, VocaLive, and GrooveMaker. Diplo wannabes can pick up the MIX in February for €74.99 ($96).

Word, Exec and other work programs set for Apple tablet
Cloud gaming firm OnLive is further diversifying its business with a new application that can run various Windows 7 services on Apple’s iPad.
OnLive Desktop is due for release this Thursday on Apple’s App Store, OnLive said. The program will be free, though it is not known if Apple has approved the application yet. A pro edition, with 50 GB of cloud storage as well as various improvements, will cost users $9.99 each month.
Users will be given access to Windows 7 applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint – plus about 2GB of cloud storage, OnLive said.
It is not known why OnLive has decided to broaden its business strategy while its cloud gaming model arguably still needs to be commercially validated.
“OnLive Desktop is the first app to deliver a no-compromise, media-rich Windows desktop experience to iPad, opening up powerful new possibilities for consumers and businesses," said OnLive CEO Steve Perlman.

While Nokia has been struggling to do battle against the likes of Apple and Android devices in developed markets, it's Symbian OS has continued a stronghold over emerging markets.
The Finnish manufacturer has released a number of stats and trends. One of which shows that its Nokia Store is now receiving 11 million app and content downloads per day.
This has enabled 177 developers to bag one million downloads apiece as the top markets in 2011 were India, China, Russia, Brazil and Turkey.
India itself favoured games and downloaded more content than the rest of the top five combined, which opted for general apps.
Of the 154 supported Nokia devices, the top five for downloads were the N8-00, the 5800 XPRESSMUSIC, the 5233, the 5230 and the C3-00.

You're standing in line for lunch, replaying last night's match on Arkaden inModern Warfare 3 in your mind, when you remember the final shot -- you really wanted that gun. You could wait until you get home, check your recent matches on Elite and shank the winning shooter's weapon of choice -- like apeasant -- or you could do it right there, in line, on your phone -- like a boss. This is the vision Beachhead Studios head Chacko Sonny has for Call of Duty Elite's free mobile app, hitting iOS smart phones tomorrow, Jan. 10, and Android one week later.
The Elite app will offer four main areas of mobile control:- Career summary: Just like Elite main, check stats and general player information on yourself and others you've played
- Recent matches: After-action report on the past 10 matches, including scores, kill/death ratios, map information for yourself and others in the match
- Challenge Tracker: Tracks your progress through specific challenges
- Customize classes: Modify your loadout -- weapons, perks, attachments -- and push custom classes directly to game
Anything altered in the Elite mobile app that affects loadouts or in-game options will be exported to console, and players will accept the changes after logging on. Most of the app's functions have been modified to fit a smaller screen, especially Sonny's favorite, class customization. Beachhead Studios developers have been testing the mobile app on their own phones, and Sonny said it expands the realm of bragging rights considerably because players will have proof -- or not -- of their achievements right in their pockets.

Desktop sized games aren't the only thing Palo Alto's premiere streaming service is pushing to your tablet -- now OnLive is out to stream you an actual desktop, as well. Following up on an old Windows 7 demo and later promises to build a "no-compromise, media-rich enterprise experience," the outlet is now launching OnLive Desktop. It's almost exactly what it sounds like -- Windows, seamlessly streaming to your iPad.
Microsoft's OS rides the same bandwidth pipelines that host OnLive's gaming service, and offers tablet owners a streamed desktop with access to fully functional versions of Microsoft Office products like Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The iPad app that is launching Thursday represents the outfit's "free" version of OnLive Desktop, and packs 2 GB of secure cloud storage in addition its limited suite of office applications. OnLive plans to expand the service with OnLive Desktop Pro, a paid variant (starting at $9.99 a month) with 50 GB of cloud storage, priority server access, additional applications and "cloud-accelerated browsing." Need something more specific? OnLive Enterprise will let firms custom tailor their cloud desktop to suit their needs -- dictating data, application and device access by user.
But how well does it work? It depends on your connection, of course. We dropped by OnLive's west coast headquarters to stream it from the source. Read on to see how it did, or simply skip the bottom if you're looking for an official press release.

We're here at Nokia's CES 2012 press announcement and we've got the confirmation that everyone's been waiting for: the Nokia Lumia 900 is real. It looks like the rumors were true: the AT&T exclusive phone is packing a 4.3-inch clear-black AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 512MB RAM and Mango. Camera-wise, there's an 8-megapixel camera 'round back with a 28mm f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens (likely the same as on the Lumia 800) and a front-facing f/2.4 wide-angle lens that's great for wide angle shots. The polycarbonate-bodied 900 has an 1.4GHz CPU inside, but the big surprise is that it's packing an LTE modem for all that high-speed internet goodness. It'll arrive stateside in the next couple of months in those lovely black or cyan colors we've come to love from the 800.

A new version of the popular arcade controller adapter for iPad, the iCade, has been revealed by maker ION.
The original iCade housed the iPad and was designed to make it appear like a miniature arcade cabinet, complete with arcade joystick and eight-button arrangement.
This new version, Engadget reports, features the same Bluetooth connectivity and passthrough charging cable but ditches the full cabinet styling in favour of a trimmed-down cradle design.
All the controls from the original iCade are present and correct.
Also on the way is the new iCade Mobile. Compatible with both the iPod Touch and iPhone, the peripheral adds four shoulder buttons, four face buttons and a traditional d-pad.
Once installed the phone can be orientated in either landscape or portrait modes.
A third device was also spotted by Engadget – the iCade Jr, which is effectively an arcade cabinet style iCade for iPhone.
ION has yet to announce release dates or prices for any of its new models.

For the past three years, Android has experienced a kind of free space expansion, but as we enter 2012, it seems the game may be changing. Instead of the old 'there's more than enough room for every Android handset maker to be a winner,' we have a three-horse's-length leader: Samsung shipping close to 55% of all Android phones, while Motorola and HTC lag behind. '[Samsung] could be in a position to twist Google's arm,' writes Jean-Louis Gassée.'If last quarter's trend continues — if Motorola and HTC lose even more ground — Samsung's bargaining position will become even stronger.' But what is Samsung's 'bargaining position'? What could they want? Perhaps more search referral money, earlier access to Android releases, or a share of advertising revenue. Will Google let Samsung gain the upper hand? It's not likely, because Motorola is about to become a fully-owned but 'independent' Google subsidiary, and its 16% of the Android market could counterbalance Samsung's influence to some extent. So what could Samsung do? 'Consider the Kindle Fire example: Just like Amazon picked the Android lock, Samsung could grab the Android Open Source code and create its own unlicensed but fully legal smartphone OS and still benefit from a portion of Android apps, or it could build its own app store the way Amazon did,' writes Gassée. 'Samsung is a tough, determined fighter and won't let Google dictate its future. The same can be said of Google. This is going to be interesting.

Xbox and PlayStation in a race to take advantage of mobile platforms, sources suggest
Microsoft studios and partners are planning to develop Xbox Live-integrated apps on Android and iOS platforms, a new report suggests.
An alleged development source, said to be familiar with Microsoft's plans, told Business Insider that the Xbox firm wants to take advantage of the mushrooming mobile space before Sony gets there first.
"Xbox is a client of ours. There's no way they'll be ignoring those other mobile platforms," the developer said.
Meanwhile, a new Microsoft job posting advertises that Xbox Live employees are “bringing the latest and greatest gaming and entertainment experience to mobile platforms including Windows Phone, iOS and other mobile platforms".

27 per cent of them spend more than three hours a day playing them.
A new study of the habits of 15,000 games by social gaming specialist MocoSpace looked at play habits on mobile, consoles and PCs.
Its finding that women over 30 are the most addicted will raise some eyebrows. There's no doubt females have embraced a habit previously dominated by teenaged males, but are they really the most active of all?
Well, that's what the study says. Specifically, it reports that 27 per cent of women over age 30 spend more than three hours playing games on their mobile phones every day.
That's double the percentage of men on average, as well as that of females from ages 12-29.
Elsewhere the research asserts that 46 per cent of people were playing more games in December 2011 than a year before, and 21 per cent play more than an hour a day.
