As those who follow such comings and goings closely may have noticed, a rather mysterious "GameStore" app seemingly made by Apple itself recently appeared in the App Store. It didn't provide much in the way of functionality for its $0.99 price tag -- displaying only a few in-app purchases that couldn't actually be purchased -- and now Apple has offered an explanation, of sorts, for the app's existence. In a message to folks who bought the app, Apple said that the app (since pulled from the App Store) was "prematurely released," and that it has refunded all purchases. Of course, that raises the question as to whether it will eventually be released officially, but Apple expectedly isn't getting any more specific at this point.

Cease and desist warnings sent to iPhone hacking resource, report claims
Apple has sparked a new legal battle against websites that facilitate illicit App Store downloads, a new report suggests.
The iPhone manufacturer is sending cease and desist letters to the owners of a popular iPhone hacking online resource.
The threats, according to a Cult of Mac report, have forced the hackers to “relocate many of its servers and implement more steps for its users to avoid legal ramifications”.
In response, the iPhone hacks group has apparently “implemented Captcha checks” that need to be passed before downloading cracked apps. It is said that this is to avoid the legal implications of hosting direct links to pirated software.
“Other piracy hosts have attempted to avoid the courtroom by also moving servers to regions outside of the United States,” the report added, with the costs involved apparently the reason why the hacking network has implemented display advertising.

App store analyst Distimo made the claim for Android, and it's yet another reminder of the accelerating power of the Google OS. Don't forget that Google recently reported 10 billion app downloads, 200 million Android devices in user, and 550,000 more activated each day.
Distimo added that 68 per cent of Android Market apps are free. That will surprise few of us, given the historically clunky nature of the buying process (initially via Google Checkout). Does Google care? probably not, since advertising is in its DNA.
Of course, Android Market is still playing catch-up with iTunes, which required two fewer months to reach the 400,000 app milestone. The Apple store is now home to around 550,000 products.
Overall, the Android space is just messier than that of Apple, with less vigilance and control over what appears in the store. And don't forget that there are other portals through which to download apps including significant locations like Amazon.

How popular is the world cheapest tablet? Pretty darn popular, it seems. The Aakash has already notched up 1.4 million bookings since going up for sale on December 14th, not massively surprising given the $41 (2,500 rupee) price tag. An upgraded version is already planned for March, with three new factories planned to each produce 75,000 new units per month. If a sub-$50 tablet is still too expensive for your tastes, then you may be happy to hear that the price should still sink as low as $35 and could even be pushed as low as $10. At that price, we'll take five.

ASUS, maker of the popular Transformer Prime Tegra 3 tablet, announced via their Facebook page that Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) will be available January 12th. In addition they are developing a boot unlocker which will void the warranty and break Google movie rentals, but will allow modding. They said, 'based on our experience, users who choose to root their devices risk breaking the system completely. However, we know there is demand in the modding community to have an unlocked bootloader. Therefore, ASUS is developing an unlock tool for that community. Please do note that if you choose to unlock your device, the ASUS warranty will be void, and Google video rental will also be unavailable because the device will be no longer protected by security mechanism.' They also announced an intermediate software update to improve the camera and touch experience, and they're dropping GPS from the feature list for poor performance."Another article argues that the Transformer Prime is an example of ASUS struggling while breaking into a new market.

While many companies use IPsec for secure remote access to their networks, no integrated IPsec VPN client is available on Android. Apple has already fixed this shortcoming in iOS, in part, because it wanted make the iPhone attractive for businesses. The Android operating system doesn't just lack an integrated IPsec VPN client, it also makes installing and configuring third-party VPN software quite complicated. IPsec VPN clients have to be integrated into the kernel of each device, and the client software has to be installed specifically for a memory area. This means that the firmware of each Android smartphone or tablet has to be modified accordingly. Until a 'real' IPsec VPN client is available, Android users can use their devices' integrated VPN clients based on PPTP or L2TP, which is deployed over IPsec. A 'real' IPsec VPN connection, however, is more secure because it encrypts data prior to authentication."

Bigger screen, Mango and possibly LTE radio.
With days to go till CES, when so many new devices are launched,Pocketnow claims to have uncovered details on the new Nokia Lumia update - codenamed Ace.
It has revealed that the device will come with 4.3-inch WVGA display, 8-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, and 512MB of RAM. It will run Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, rather than the usual Tango.
All should be revealed next week. But this is an incremental change up from the Lumia 800. Insider chatter suggests more radical changes will emerge in the form of new handsets later this year.

Unloved and overlooked but still the tops by pages browsed.
For years Symbian ruled the smartphone space, even though with hindsight its devices were clumsy and ill-suited to email, browsing, app downloads and so on.
The arrival of iOS and Android revealed just how inadequate Symbian was and convinced Nokia – its de-facto owner even though the OS is open source – to abandon the platform for its top end devices in favour of WinPho.
And yet, according to data from StatCounter unscrambled by The Royal Pingdom, Symbian finished 2011 over 11 percentage points ahead of iOS.
It went from 30.25 per cent in January to 33.59 per cent in December in terms of its share of web pages browsed.
By comparison Apple had 22.56 per cent in December, Android had 21.74 per cent and BlackBerry 7.86 per cent (half of its share in January).

Not content to provide us with ClockworkMod Recovery and other fine hacks, Koush just made a free USB tethering app available for Android aptly called ClockworkMod Tether Alpha. While it's not the first app to bypass paid tethering plans, it supports unrooted phones and works with Linux, Mac and Windows computers. Just enable USB debugging on your phone, download the appropriate installer for your desktop OS of choice, then connect both devices via USB and you're all set. The installation process creates a virtual network adapter on your computer and pushes a matching APK to your phone. A proxy is used to avoid detection by the carriers.
We tested the app on a late-model MacBook Air running OS X Lion and an AT&T-branded Samsung Captivate Glide -- along with a couple other handsets -- without much success (as documented in the screenshot above). Then again, based on the discussions following Koush's Google+ post (source link below), the app appears to work for many folks and continues being tweaked on an hourly basis. Clearly your mileage will vary, but let us know in the comments how it's working out if you've installed the app.

It looks like our friends over at Microsoft have outed a quartet of new Xbox Live games that will be delivered to the Windows Phone Marketplace in the not-too-distant future. Being billed as "optimized for the newest Windows Phone 7.5," the aforementioned -- and somewhat familiar -- titles include: Age of Zombies by Halfbrick, Bullet Asylum by UberGeekGames, geoDefense Swarm by Critical Thought, and Tamagotchi by Namco.
Why are these touchscreen-tickling titles familiar, you ask? Three of the four have been proving their mettle on other mobile platforms. GeoDefense Swarm and Tamagotchi are currently available in the iOS App Store; Age of Zombies is available in both the Android Market and iOS App Store; and Bullet Asylumhas been in the works for some time -- we were treated to a video preview last summer, which you'll find below. No word yet on release dates, but the foursome's mere presence on Microsoft's site makes us think that we won't have to wait all that long before initiating the download sequence.

A 12-year-old boy's mother failed to see the funny side when Siri running on a demo model iPhone delivered a torrent of abuse in response to a question according to a report.
The Sun reported that 12-year-old Charlie Le Quesne was trying out an iPhone 4S when it told him to "shut the f*** up you ugly t***".
Tesco staff told the boy's mother that someone had tampered with the phone and changed the phone owner's name, presumably to the naughty phrase. That said, Siri only very occasionally says the user's name and does not, from what we've seen, actually speak the owner's name even when the name is provided in an answer. So a simple name change doesn't appear to explain the prank.

Atari has reportedly been applying legal pressure to developers which it believes are infringing on its intellectual property rights, despite the developers affected claiming that attempts had been made on their part to reach an agreement.
Black Powder Media, which created iPhone title Vector Tanks, has had the game removed from the App Store by Apple after complaints by Atari, claiming that the veteran publisher's 'special relationship' with the platform holder meant that it received preferential treatment.
"Anything that has even a passing resemblance to an Atari classic has been issued a copyright infringement claim," claimed Black Powder Media in a public statement.
"So - thanks to their special relationship with Apple - Atari has successfully scrubbed the app store of their perceived competition. It looks as though Apple complied without so much as a rebuttal or independent evaluation."
Vector Tanks is a wireframe 3D title which bears some resemblance to classic Atari IP Battlezone, both it and Vector Tanks Extreme have now been removed from the App Store.
Black Powder employee and Vector Tanks programmer Peter Hirschberg says that he had attempted to get in touch with the publisher on previous occasions, but to no avail.
"The cruel irony here is that I tried for years to get hold of Atari to license their IP but they seemed to have fallen off the planet," Hirschberg told VentureBeat. "Now this. It's very depressing."
The move seems to be in direct contradiction to the plan laid out by Thom Kozick, the head of Atari's new social enterprise, Atari GO, back in 2010.
"This initiative is not about going out after the market with a big stick, that's a different situation," Kozik said in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz at the time.
"First and foremost we're going to be saying, 'let's bring the friends and folks who love us, and the folks who love these brands, into the fold, and we'll worry about the folks who don't want to play along, no pun intended, we'll worry about them later in a different context'.
"It's a horrible position for me to be in. I've got a ton of very talented developers who are very interested in my intellectual property. Now what I've got is the GO initiative so I can turn around to them and say: I've got this incredibly deep catalogue of IP which you can get involved with, and I'll help you develop the next iteration of a classic game.
"I'll help you to create a socialised, monetised version of a classic piece of IP from any of the studios which were part of Atari during its long lifespan. That's what we're finding is a tremendous opportunity, a lot of developers are getting very excited about that."
Whether or not Atari is planning its own new take on Battlezone for iOS remains to be seen, but given the far-reaching influence of the company's titles on today's games, an aggressive IP protection purge could prove highly damaging for many studios.

According to a report from NetApplications, which has measured browser usage data since 2004, Oracle's Java Mobile Edition has surpassed Android as the #2 mobile OS on the internet at 26.80%, with iOS at 46.57% and Android at 13.44%. And the trend appears to be growing. Java ME powers hundreds of millions of low-end 'feature phones' for budget buyers. In 2011, feature phones made up 60% of the install base in the U.S."Looking at the linked chart, it looks Java ME's been ahead of Android for all of 2011, too, except for the month of October.

Research from Flurry confirmed that Christmas 2011 was dominated by smartphones and tablets, with the result that 242m apps were downloaded on the big day and 1.2bn across the holiday week of December 25th-31st.
It's the first time app downloads have passed 1bn in a week, said Flurry.
By comparison the stats say that an average of 750m apps downloaded per week earlier in December. That's a 60 per cent jump.
The US consumer did the most downloading at 509 million, followed by China (99 million), and the UK (81 million).
All of this activity was powered by the huge number of smartphones and tablets on the world's Christmas lists. 6.8 million devices were activated, up 353 per cent from the 1.5 million average activations a day over the first 20 days of December.

Rumoured to be lining up an Intel-powered smartphone for CES 2012.
Intel has been singularly unsuccessful at breaking into the phone space over the years, for all its dominance in the desktop market.
Instead its ARM tech that underpins most of the world's devices, with Qualcomm, Nvidia, TI and others doing the manufacturing.
However, the chip firm is driving hard into tablets and its new 'ultrabook' slimline notebook device family thanks to its Mooretown and Medfield microprocessors. And maybe it has a shot at smartphones.
The Korea Times reports that LG and Intel are set to try again after an Android smartphone running on Moorestown was scrapped last year.
The rumoured second Medfield device could be released this March.

It's the dawn of a new year for How Would You Change, so let's take a look back at one of the hottest-selling phones of the last one. A low-key launch couldn't dispel a summer of hype for the handset: Apple went for evolution when we were expecting a revolution -- even though we'd seen the same with the 3G/3GS. In the cold light of January, we can see the 4S for what it is: a refined experience that lacks a compelling reason to pay an early-upgrade fee. If you were in the planning meeting for the iPhone 6 (it's a hunch), what would you be pushing for? Built-in NFC? Would you have kept Siri under wraps until it had left beta? Do you resent the existence of any phone that can't run Android? Constructive and polite suggestions in the comments below, impolite ones should be written down on a piece of paper and sent to the usual address (we kid, we kid).
