OnLive has already given Microsoft loving iPad owners a hefty, gratis helping of Windows 7, but that doesn't mean they haven't been building a paywall. What's behind the freshly dried brick and mortar? OnLive Desktop Plus, an optional, subscription based upgrade that touts new features for users who are willing to pay a fee. Five dollars a month buys you a cloud-accelerated web browser (that would be Internet Explorer 9, complete with fully functioning Adobe Flash and Acrobat plug-ins) and priority access to the OnLive Desktop service -- freeloading "standard" subscribers can only access the service on an as-available basis. OnLive says that the cloud powered browser's full Windows experience finally gives the iPad full Flash compatibility, giving you the chance to feed your nostalgic need to watch cartoons check their email. We got an early look at the app, read on for a quick hands-on and OnLive's official press release.

If LG failed to impress so far with the Android 2.3 phones it's shown off in the run up to MWC 2012, perhaps the Optimus 4X HD can turn things around. This 4.7-inch beast will hit Europe in the second quarter and is its first to feature a 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 as its benchmark destroying CPU, a 4.7-inch True HD IPS LCD (1280x720) plus what appears to be a lightly customized version of Ice Cream Sandwich. Perhaps the only logical followup to its Optimus 2X that kicked off all the dual-core madness, it also includes a 2,150mAh battery, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Despite that huge screen, at a depth of 8.9mm it's only slightly thicker than the superwide 4x3 Optimus Vu. Just like the Fujitsu prototype we spent some time with at CES, the Tegra 3 features a 4+1 "Companion Core" design, with a fifth low power unit available to take care of more mundane tasks without draining the battery. This is all pretty close to the leaked "X3" specs we'd heard, however there's no mention of NFC or HSPA+ just yet, only DLNA and MHL. Check out the full press release after the break for a few more specs.

Harris makes the tough tech you'd expect to see census takers (leave it), NFL stadiums and public busestoting around. It's introducing a new 7-inch Android tablet that's so hard-as-nails it would make a Galaxy Tab go home and call its mother. The Harris RF-3590 packs a 1024 x 600 multitouch display, a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM, 2 and 8-megapixel front and rear-facing cameras and comes running Honeycomb. There's plenty of connection options with the usual WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth supplanted by a cellular connection, Ethernet, HDMI, SD and USB holes. It'll come with a 64GB SSD as standard but you can upgrade it to 128GB if you've got the moolah. Designed for soldiers in the battlefield, when stealth isn't necessary you can even activate voice control and bark your orders into the pair of microphones included. There's no word on pricing or availability, presumably because if you want to pick one of these up, you probably need to be called "General," and not just because you're good at Starcraft.

The legal tussle between Apple and Proview over the iPad has swung in Cupertino's direction. According to Ximin News, a Shanghai court has rebuffed Proview's demand for an injunction halting the sale of the Apple tablet due to licensing issues. The Pudong New Area People's Court made the decision yesterday, stating that there wasn't enough evidence to support Proview's claim of a trademark violation. There wasn't enough to substantiate Proview's claims that it still held rights to the trademark in China. Its Taiwan branch registered the trademark in several countries, with the Shenzhen branch registering it in China. Apple then bought worldwide rights from Proview Taiwan, which would have included China. Proview Shenzhen is now saying that they never authorized its Taiwan counterpart to do so, but Apple is says that it has Proview Shenzhen's signatures on the paperwork. It looks like it's going to get easier to grab that iPad in China. An iPhone 4S, on the other hand...

With the coming of Android 3.1 you finally have the option of using the device as a USB host. This may be through a USB OTG (On-the-Go) adaptor, but nonetheless it’s a feature which was sorely missed until now. [Manuel] put together a guide on using Android as a USB host. As you can see, his example hardware is an Arduino board but this is applicable with just about any device.
The tutorial implements a test app for the Android device where a slider will set the brightness of the Arduino’s on-board LED. The Arduino sketch is nothing special, it just reads data received on the UART. This means that it doesn’t care if it’s connected to an Android, PC, OSX, or Linux system, it goes about its business until the RX interrupt updates the data variable.
This will greatly simplify a lot of projects we’ve seen, such as this message scrolling belt buckle. That used extra hardware to make the Arduino the host, a step that is now necessary.

Having released Battlefield 3 on the Apple App Store earlier this month, EA has now pulled the game from sale.
IGN reports that the decision was made after an influx of negative reviews regarding both its controls and its network stability. The game is free to play thanks to sponsorship from Act of Valor, but included only one map and four weapons.
At the time of removal the game had a 2.5 star user rating on the App Store.
"EA Mobile is committed to delivering mobile entertainment experiences that are on par with the content and quality users have come to expect from their favorite EA gaming brands,” a statement from the publisher reads.
“To this end, we have decided to remove Battlefield 3: Aftershock from the App Store and are currently re-evaluating the app in response to the consumer feedback we've received. We thank all the fans who have downloaded the game to date."
An expanded and improved version of the game will be released later this year.

Microsoft has denied rumours that the firm's eponymous Office suite is destined for Apple's iPad, saying that leaked images of an iOS Office were "not Microsoft's software".
Murdoch-owned iPad Newspaper The Daily claimed that an iPad Office was set to be submitted to Apple for approval "soon" and detailed a "hands-on" with a "working prototype".
However the New York Times reported that a Microsoft spokesperson said: "The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumours and speculation", but wouldn't be drawn further on the matter.
Notably the statement did not say that Microsoft had no plans for an iOS office. The Daily is standing by the story, saying that a Microsoft employee showed them the application.
It is possible, of course, that the issue is subject to Microsoft's infamous internal politics. One imagines that at least one part of Microsoft would be unhappy with releasing the software on arch-rival iOS ahead of the rumoured bundling of Office with the upcoming "Windows on ARM" version of Windows 8.

While one-third use the devices at dinner, presumably for texting and not talking.
Research from Lloyds TSB shows the handbook of phone manners has been thrown out of the window. Over half of UK phone users talk on the device when in bed, while 34 per cent use their phones at dinner.
Mobiles even seem too irresistible during calls of nature with 24 per cent admitting they've used their phone in a public toilet.
Additionally, three-quarters use their phone in the street, 63 per cent use them on public transport, while 12 per cent have used their phone in a meeting or during a presentation.
Results also show 11 per cent have used their phone at a theatre, cinema or concert, which rises to 29 per cent for under-25 year olds. Nine per cent have even used their phone during a wedding or christening.
However, all isn't lost as 70 per cent still consider it unacceptable to use a phone at the theatre, cinema or concert hall. Worryingly, that figure falls to 51 per cent for people considering it inappropriate during dinner at a restaurant, falling further still to 21 per cent against use in a public toilet.

Up from 20.1 per cent in January 2011.
Google's Android OS appears to be the people's choice, securing over a third of Britain's active mobile phones as of January 2012, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech via the Guardian.
The result enabled Android to climb from third place and overtake former leader Apple, which had shares fall to 28.5 per cent from 29.2 per cent in January 2011.
Meanwhile, RIM climbed into third place from fourth despite losing 0.6 per cent of users and the BlackBerry firm can thank Nokia for the climb.
The Finnish firm's near obsolete Symbian OS halved its 26.7 per cent of users to 13.1 per cent as Nokia chose Windows Phone to power future smartphones.
That said, both Nokia and Microsoft have a lot of work to do, managing to secure just 2.2 per cent of the market.

Well, this is definitely the craziest thing to happen in wrestling games in quite some time -- and wrestling is a sport built entirely on human insanity. WWF WrestleFest, the classic arcade game by Technos, has been updated for release on iOS by THQ. The new "WWE Wrestlefest" has smoother graphics and an updated roster of wrestlers (a rostler, if you will) including John Cena and Randy Orton, alongside old-school wrestlers like the late "Macho Man" Randy Savage. It's also been modernized with "an extensive downloadable content program."
The app is available in a free "Lite" version and a $2.99 "Premium" version for iPhone, and both "Lite" and paid for iPad.
THQ also plans to release this new WrestleFest on XBLA, PSN, Android, and PC, sometime in 2012. So we hope the new version is good.

The last time the iPhone dallied into eager Chinese hands there was more than a spot of bother. Hopefully, China Telecom's announcement that it'll be getting the 4S on March 9th will give retail stores enough time to prepare. It'll be up for pre-order online from March 2nd, starting from free on contract, and available in the usual 16GB, 32GB and 64GB varieties. The news came via the China Telecom website yesterday, with CEO Wang Xiaochu confirming in a press release this morning (Chinese time). So if Nokia thought it would have the network's biggest release in March, it might have to think again.

What the Atrix 4G first promised, it looks like the folks at Canonical may deliver. Think back to CES 2011, when Motorola showed us a future where our phone was the only computing device we would need -- only to leave us wanting when its webtop app didn't deliver the requisite functionality for such a future. Well, it turns out Ubuntu now runs on multi-core Android devices and your handset can grant a full desktop experience when docked with a display and a keyboard. It's a customized version of Ubuntu that plays nice with Android, the two OS's sharing data and services while running simultaneously. So, you can still access telephony and texts from the Ubuntu environment while enjoying all the computing capabilities it has to offer, including: Ubuntu TV, virtualization tools for running Windows applications, desktop web browsers, and Ubuntu apps built for ARM. It isn't clear exactly what hardware you'll need to run Ubuntu on a handset, but Canonical has said it works on multi-core devices with HDMI and USB connections. We'll get more info next week when it's shown off at MWC, but until then you'll have to settle for the source below and PR after the break.

February 22nd, 2012, 00:42 Posted By: wraggster
The continuing value of the App Store to developers was under scrutiny at the BAFTA-hosted Games Question Time event last night.
An expert panel composed of UKIE head Jo Twist, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard, Frontier Developments' David Braben and Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley debated the likely effects of the increasing demand for high production values on iOS devices.
Jason Kingsley agreed that the emphasis for a product to be "as polished as possible" was greater than ever, but that the investment necessary for that standard of execution can still be offset in a way that's impossible on consoles.
"Instead of making 20 hours worth of gameplay, you can make an hour's worth of gameplay, see how people react," he said. "The acid test is what people do with it... That's brilliant feedback for us; actually what people do when they play the game."
However, Mark Gerhard stated that the problem Kingsley desrcibed - of producing what is, "effectively a gold master" - already exists on the iOS platform, and that the "next wave of iterations" of Apple hardware could unbalance the economics of development and "kill the App Store."
"Everything's moving online," Gerhard said. "This is controversial, but the mobile bubble will burst this year and the social bubble will burst, too."
I think that, bar a handful of winners, nobody makes money on Apple's platform. It's great for consumers, not good for developers, and that's going to be the death of it
Mark Gerhard, CEO, Jagex
"There just isn't the money there. The only people that are winning right now are Apple and consumers. Everyone's rushing to make games for the new iPhone, and in that Apple makes a lot of money, but it's a race to zero."
Gerhard noted that Jagex has had four number one games on the App Store, but none made more than ÂŁ3,000 to ÂŁ4,000 a month profit. The amount of revenue versus the necessary resources is "a problem" for independent developers, and Gerhard believes that the same is true of all "walled-garden" services.
"I think any closed platform, be it Microsoft, be it PlayStation Vita, XBLA, PSN, the App Store, ultimately are taking such a big chunk that people just aren't making money. Facebook, too."
"I think that fundamentally, bar a handful of winners that Apple is keeping, nobody makes money on their platform. It's great for consumers, not good for developers, and that's going to be the death of it."
Gerhard addressed the widely held belief that the App Store is "the next frontier" for game developers. Like all closed platforms, he argued, the App Store is subject to "lethargy" in the form of approval processes and the need to adhere to guidelines.
Jagex has found a huge amount of success on the open web, and Gerhard believes that improvements in browser technology over the next 12 to 24 months will make it possible to create immersive 3D games.
As a result, the browser will emerge as a "new platform" that offers developers a greater share of revenue and greater control over their products.
"I would say as a survival strategy you want to leapfrog that," he said. "You want to go purely straight to browser."
"Online we can launch and we can iterate hourly. We can use data to kind of tone and shape the content experience. We can be that agile. We don't have to release, see what happens, make some changes, and re-release weeks later."
However, David Braben argued that the biggest problem facing developers is the "route to market," or actually getting the product into the hands of the audience. The App Store may not be ideal in this regard, but it has clear advantages over the open web.
Gerhard had already stated his belief that "new channels" would emerge to aid discovery of browser games on the open web, but Braben countered that any such entities would also be closed systems.
"The advantage of The App Store is that it's a place that focuses you; you're seeing what's coming out," Braben said.
"With the internet it's a lot, lot harder. I think you're right that there will be routes to the internet that will essentially do what you're talking about, but they will again be closed."
"There will be a gatekeeper otherwise there isn't value to it, in a bizarre way."

EA is weeks away from releasing The Simpsons: Tapped Out, a free-to-play game for iOS devices.
CNET reports that EA has committed significant resources to the project, using the cartoon's writers and voice actors. The game starts with Homer causing a nuclear explosion that wipes out Springfield, tasking the player with rebuilding it, completing quests and unlocking characters along the way.
EA's Bernard Kim said: "We want this to be one of the biggest titles this year. We've invested a lot. It's absolutely a top-tier development priority for us. Hardcore Simpsons fans will get a lot out of it."
The game will be a free download, supported by microtransactions, with players able to buy doughtnuts the in-game currency. No firm release date has been announced, but Tapped Out is expected on the App Store in the next few weeks, with an Android version to follow a few months later.

Fake game splurge on Android Market.
The problem of rogue apps seems to get worse by the week, and threatens to de-rail the progress of the Android platform in particular.
These products pose as real, well-known games, and once installed re-direct the user to ads or – worse – set up diallers that sap credit from the user's account.
They can also post ratings and share themselves on social networks for further propagation.
Malware specialist Trend notified Google of the rogue apps, which removed them soon after.
Tend analyst Kervin Alintanahin blogged: “Quite obviously, this trend of apps being equipped with aggressive advertising methods — especially those related to search monetization — will be seen for quite a while. Thus, users are advised to be extra careful when installing apps.”

Extraordinary numbers, but that's what the research says.
Antenna Software's Mobile Business Forecast 2012 polled 1,000 CIOs and business unit leaders in the UK and US.
It revealed that 43 per cent of them are currently working on a mobile app for their customers – while 42 per cent are making one for their employees and 45 per cent are building a mobile website.
Amazing stats, which you have to assume reflect a pretty tech-centric sample.
Anyhow, for all their industriousness, there appears to be much frustration with mobile development.
Antenna found that 45 per cent of IT and business decision makers are dissatisfied with the speed at which the mobile projects they commission get to market.

Well, if it looks real, sounds real and is halfway logical, we probably should distrust it all the more. Yes, it's the time when all the rumors, photoshops and general hysteria around Apple's next slab reaches its apex. The photo above was grabbed by the steady hand of sas126, a blurrycam snapper in name only, and posted to Chinese site Weiphone, purporting to be the logic board for the iPad 3. The big news (if true) is the "A5X" silicon, suggesting we'll see an incremental enhancement rather than the wholesale revolutions evident in the A4 and A5 chips that accompanied its predecessors. The SoC (with the Apple logo, to the right of the two Hynix memory modules) carries a date-stamp of 1146, suggesting it was produced in the 46th week of last year. Of course, now that we're getting so close to the actual event, whatever Tim Cook whips out on stage will never match whatever we'd conjured up on our own hearts: so try to dampen down that rampant excitement because we've still got 17 days left to wait.

"Researchers at Georgia Tech university have built a prototype app for touch-screen mobile devices that is vying to be a complete solution for texting without the need to look at a mobile gadget's screen. In theory, it should greatly help the blind interact with mobile phones, but it could help just about anyone looking for a more efficient way to interact. Research has shown that gesture-based texting is a viable solution for eyes-free written communication in the future, making obsolete the need for users to look at their devices while inputting text. The free open-source app, called BrailleTouch, incorporates the Braille writing system used by the visually impaired. Early studies with visually impaired participants proficient in Braille typing have demonstrated that users can input up to 32 words per minute with 92 percent accuracy with the prototype app for the iPhone.

"A lawyer representing Proview International on Monday announced that the Intermediate People's Court in Huizhou, a city in southern China, ruled that distributors should stop selling iPads in China. From the article: 'The ruling, which was also reported widely in China's state media, may not have a far-reaching effect. In its battle with Apple, Proview is utilizing lawsuits in several places and also requesting commercial authorities in 40 cities to block iPad sales. Apple Inc. said in a statement Monday that its case is still pending in mainland China. The company has appealed to Guangdong's High Court against an earlier ruling in Proview's favor.'"
