After the most recent quarter Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer was proud to let us all know that there are now 365 million iOS devices "in play," with over 50 million sold just in Q2. With the iPhone now available in 100 countries on 230 carriers and the new iPad shipping in over 40 countries, the continued growth isn't much of a surprise. Obviously, as the number of devices in the hands of users increases, so does the number of apps, and in this quarter the iTunes app store topped 600,000 apps -- including over 200,000 specifically designed for the iPad. The iPad in particular was singled out as being a driver for growth. Tim Cook said that 67 million iPads have been sold since the first model debuted. By contrast, he claims it took 24 years to sell that many Macs. Oppenheimer said that the education market was increasingly turning to the tablet, purchasing them by a margin of almost two-to-one over Macs. The San Diego school district in particular ordered 10,000 this quarter and has plans to purchase 15,000 more. Even the government is getting in on the action, with the air force using them as flight guides. For more details from Cupertino's earnings call check out our live blog.

The company continues its relentless growth
Apple's latest quarter once again beat Wall Street expectations in both revenue and earnings, sending its shares up 4% after the close of the market. Apple's revenue for their fiscal second quarter was $39.2 billion, up from $24.67 billion in the same quarter last year. Apple's profit was $11.6 billion, which works out to $12.30 per share, up from $6.40 per share in last year's Q2.
Analysts had expected Apple's earnings to be $10.04 a share on $36.81 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.
This is all driven primarily by iOS; Macintosh unit sales grew by 7% compared to last year, while iPod unit sales declined 15%. Looking at the specific hardware numbers, Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones during the quarter, an increase of 88%. The company also sold 11.8 million iPads, an increase of 151%.
Putting the numbers in perspective, Microsoft sold about 16 million Xbox 360s worldwide in 2011, and Sony is expected to sell about 15 million PS3s worldwide for their fiscal year (which ended in March). Nintendo's total 3DS sales from March 2011 to March 2012 will probably end up at about 12 million units worldwide.
Apple is currently selling almost 12 million iPhones every month, and about 4 million iPads every month. Apple is selling about 10 times as many iPhones every month as Microsoft sells Xbox 360s, and about 4 times as many iPads (and 12 times as many iPhones) as Nintendo sells 3DS units every month.

Studio says it will abandon Google's operating system if sales targets aren't met
London studio Sports Interactive is facing the ‘worst ever’ piracy rates affecting sales of its Android edition of Football Manager, an executive at the company has said.
Miles Jacobson, the studio’s director, also believes that the conversion rate between pirated and purchased copies of the game will likely worsen.
“There's no working copy protection on the [Android] platform currently, so it's pretty easy for someone to get it working," Jacobson (pictured) told Eurogamer.
"The platform is also very popular in some countries where there's a larger piracy problem than in others.
"Typically piracy gets worse later into a game's lifecycle, so this would have ended worse than that, as the Android version likely will too."

But Sharp still ranks as country's number one OEM with a 23.5 per cent market share.
Historically, the Japanese handset market functioned differently from most of the rest of the world. OEMs followed parameters mandated by the operators, and local firms such as Sharp, Fuji, Panasonic and Toshiba dominated the space.
That all changed with the arrival of iPhone and Android, which turned Japanese consumers' heads after more than a decade of insularity.
The tipping point came in a three-month period ending in February 2012, during which smartphones became the most acquired device type, according to comScore Japan.
Sharp continued to lead the overall market, though its share dipped slightly from November 2011, which allowed marginal increases to second and third placed Panasonic and Fujitsu.
Meanwhile, Android accounted for the largest smartphone platform share, with 61.4 per cent, while iOS is in second with 34.2 per cent. Both of these shares increased slightly at the expense of Microsoft's Windows Phone.

Business intelligence firm MBA Online has created an infographic pinpointing the highs and lows of Canada-based RIM.
It calls it the 'death of RIM' which is a bit premature given that the OEM sold 10m units in Q4 2011.
Mind you, the firm is on an abysmal slide.
It entered the market in 1999 with the BlackBerry 850, which pushed its annual sales up by 80 per cent over five years, and delivered one million users by 2004.
The success story continued until 2008, by which time the iPhone and Android had been launched and the RIM graph began to slide downwards.

Both Spark 360 and Spark Trophies have new versions out today. Spark 360 4.90 fixes a number of bugs; Spark Trophies 3.10 adds the Game Catalog I previewed earlier, as well as adds a new locale setting (in Account Settings), which controls the information in the new Game Catalog and the PlayStation Blog. You can use the Catalog to view information and images, track release dates for upcoming games, and set reminders in Calendar, if month and year are available.
If you have noticed out-of-date trophies information in Spark Trophies recently, it’s because the US server has stopped updating its information – at least for me, as well as a number of other commenters. For this reason, 3.10 force-switches the data server to EU once again – if you prefer, you can still switch back to US (in Account Settings), but it is not recommended.

It may not have all the glitz of a Spotify or an Rdio, but eMusic is the one of the OGs of the online music game, serving up MP3s to internet citizens since the late-90s. The site today is celebrating the launch of an Android app, which brings curated radio stations, music recommendations, playlist mixes and downloads (with a subscription) to the Googley mobile OS. The app, which was created in conjunction with the folks at music discovery app, We Are Hunted, is available for devices running Android 2.3.3 or higher. More information can be found in the press release after the break.

Microsoft has updated its SkyDrive cloud storage and sharing app for Windows Phone -- you know, the one that offers more free storage than a certain competitor. New features include a batch-select tool to make moving files around easier while on the go, the ability to directly manage folder permissions and the quick sharing of files with approved recipients in your People Hub. Version 2.0 is currently available for download in the Marketplace -- even for low-end Windows Phones.
In other news, Microsoft has revealed pricing for its just-launched Skydrive app on Windows desktops, setting you back $10, $25, or $50 a year for an additional 20GB, 50GB or 100GB. Scrapped in the process is the 25 gigs of free storage that Microsoft once offered to new users, now dropping that pro-bono capacity to just 7GBs, save for the lucky few that opted in before the company announced its new pricing structure.
Update: It's been confirmed on Microsoft's website that the upgrade from the new 7GB limit to the previous 25GB for existing users is a limited time loyalty offer, so be sure to manage your storage as soon as possible to avoid the new limits.

Nokia’s first stab at reversing its torrid fortunes appears not to have taken off.
The company has reported a €1.34bn loss for its 2012 Q1 with smartphone sales tumbling 52 per cent year-on-year.
2m Lumia handsets were sold in the period, and Nokia is predicting a similar performance from Q2.
Net sales for the quarter fell from €10.4bn to €7.35bn, with total smartphone sales reaching 12m – again, down from 24.2m in the same quarter last year. North American phone sales flat lined at just 600k units
"We have launched four Lumia devices ahead of schedule to encourage awards and popular acclaim," Nokia CEO Stephen Elop stated.
“The actual sales results have been mixed. We exceeded expectations in markets including the United States, but establishing momentum in certain markets including the UK has been more challenging."
"We're navigating through a significant company transition in an industry environment that continues to evolve and shift quickly. Over the last year we have made progress on our new strategy, but we have faced greater-than-expected competitive challenges.
"We are confident in our strategy and focused on responding urgently in the short term and creating value for our shareholders in the long term."
Nokia’s most recent Lumia handset, the Lumia 900, was not included the results and launched recently to strong reviews.

April 23rd, 2012, 21:57 Posted By: wraggster
A new report from NPD has claimed that four out of ten gamers who have played a freemium game have gone on to make an in-game purchase.
The organisation also found that females are “significantly more likely” than males to play freemium titles, but on the flip side are less likely to buy an IAP.
In addition, only 15 per cent of gamers who are aware of freemium games choose not to play them. It estimates that 38 per cent of all US citizens aged two and up are currently playing a freemium game of some kind.
“The majority of freemium gamers who opt to pay to upgrade their experience do so within the first month of playing a particular game,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier stated.
“Males and those ages 18 to 34 are traditionally seen as a big part of the core gamer audience, so it’s likely these groups are not quite as engaged with freemium because the gaming experience is quite different from what they are used to from the games they play on consoles, handhelds or PCs.
“At a minimum, for these gamers a freemium game would provide a different experience, like a snack versus a full meal.”

There’s a word – synchronicity – to describe two disparate events that occur together in a meaningful way. We see this a lot in the Hackaday tip line; two people send in somewhat similar hacks solving similar problems in similar ways nearly simultaneously. Here’s two builds by [Bryce] and [spektakx] that hit our inbox within minutes of each other that both implement existing interfaces with iPads.
[h=4]iPad turntable controller[/h][spektakx] sent in an iPad powered DJ MIDI controller he built as a prototype to test out the size, orientation and layout for an upcoming build. The turntable controllers are simple USB affairs made to jog and scratch records digitally. Although [spektakx] admits it’s a little unfinished, it’s still just a prototype. Also, he can use a Windows 7 tablet laptop for ‘more suited’ hardware. Check out [spektakx]‘ video demo after the break.
[h=4]an iPad cash register[/h][Hacktheory] found [Bryce]‘s Flickr photolog of a DIY ‘Square’ cash register. The electronics part of this build is practically non-existent; it’s just an iPad with a credit card readers that plugs into the headphone jack. Yes, we just saw these ‘Square’ credit card readers this last week. The fabrication portion of this build is incredible – [Bryce] has a few wonderful pieces of walnut there, and did an exceptional job with the wood work. It’s probably not well suited to high-volume retail, but we couldn’t think of a better cash register for a boutique shop.

49 per cent use under 100MB but pay for five times the amount.
Mobile price comparison site billmonitor.com says consumers overestimate their mobile data needs to prevent 'bill shock' – excessive charges that come when users run over their limit – though just eight per cent have experienced this.
Almost half of all smartphone users use just 100MB per month or less, though 88 per cent pay for 500MB.
Smartphone data use has risen from 71MB to 154MB per month in the past 18 months, though 27 per cent are 'power users' with over 250MB of monthly data use.
Stelios Koundouros, founder of billmonitor.com, said: "Virtually all smartphone users have one thing in common: they’re all paying more for mobile data than they should.
"It is notoriously difficult for people to estimate their real data usage, and smartphone users who don’t know how much data they are using cannot make an informed decision on which tariff is right for them. We urge people to take a good look at their consumption and make sure that they are not paying over the odds for their data."

Cross-platform expansion is part of TV Everywhere strategy.
Broadcaster Time Warner will begin live streaming of Cartoon Network across iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch as part of its TV Everywhere initiative, which gives satellite subscribers access to watch full-length shows on demand.
The on-the-move expansion will also enable viewers to stream content on the official Cartoon Network website for viewers that don't have access to iOS-powered devices.
Q1 2012 produced the channel's best viewing figures of the past five years, which rose by 30 per cent on 2011.
Cartoon Network is watched in over 99 million American households and 168 countries.

Road trip app allows drivers to fill spare car seats up with commuters and murderous hitchhikers.
European ride-sharing service BlablaCar connects drivers that want to share their driving duties, enabling them to offer spare seats to members in order cut back on travel expenses.
The new iPhone app allows users to post trips including one-offs, daily or weekly commutes, while also adding the seats available and price per passenger.
Passengers can also search for rides, sifting through thousands of posts before contacting the driver to discuss the terms of travel.
There's also a rating feature so users can share information, perhaps whether the driver is a speed demon or if the passenger has hygiene problems or a penchant for knives.
Nicolas Brusson, co-founder, BlablaCar, said: "Being able to find and arrange road trips from your mobile makes it an even more convenient choice for drivers wanting to reduce the cost of motoring and for passengers looking for a cheaper alternative to the train. With the cost of travel spiralling continuously upwards, it makes sense to save money by making use of car seats going spare."

Threatpost is reporting on a new study of mobile malware that finds accountability, not superior technology, has kept Apple's iOS ecosystem free of viruses, even as the competing Android platform strains under the weight of repeated malicious code outbreaks. Dan Guido of the firm Trail of Bits and Michael Arpaia of iSEC Partners told attendees at the SOURCE Boston Conference on Thursday about an empirical analysis of existing malicious programs for the Android and iOS platforms which shows that Google is losing the mobile security contest badly — every piece of malicious code the two identified was for the company's Android OS, while Apple's iOS remained free of malware, despite owning 30% of the mobile smartphone market in the U.S. Apple's special sauce? Policies that demand accountability from iOS developers, and stricter controls on what applications can do once they are installed on Apple devices.
