Instapaper creator Marco Arment has been kept so busy with the iOS version that he decided to contract out the Android iteration to Mobelux. Fortunately, this is the same developer that crafted Tumblr apps for both the iPhone and Android, so we can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Available today, priced just shy of $3, Instapaper ties together one of iOS' favorites with Android's capacity for sharing across multiple apps. It arrives cocooned in a decidedly classy UI, even on our Gingerbread devices -- although it does get a little squashed in some sub-menus. As long as you're running an Android version higher than 2.2, hit up the source below to give it a try.

In the interest of keeping cool this summer, we've put together a list of the hottest products out right now. From smartphones to e-readers and everything in between, there's no time like the present to re-up that post-spring-cleaning stash. So grab a popsicle or a cold one and dive in -- the water's just right.
As you prepare for adventures with friends and fun in the sun, just remember that a great smartphone should be at the top of your gear list. Whether you're looking for travel tips, a new place to hang or even directions to get there, your smartphone will have you covered. It can help you check-in for flights, rent a car and even get great deals on places to stay. Go ahead and leave your point-and-shoot camera at home, because many of today's best smartphones excel at photography and allow you to immediately share your memories as they're captured. If you plan to travel abroad, be sure to spring for an unlocked handset to avoid those nasty roaming fees. Whatever your particular needs, our smartphone selection is geared to make your decision as painless as possible - and more importantly, ensure that you have a fun and rewarding summer. Dive in on the other side of the break.
[h=2]Editors' Choice[/h] |
[h=4]HTC One X[/h]If you're truly wanting to start your summer off with a bang, look no further than the HTC One X, which is available in an unlocked, international model (approx. $600), or domestically through AT&T for $199 -- the latter of which sports longer battery life and comes with LTE connectivity. The One X best represents many of the qualities that we look for in a handset, and along with its stellar build quality and gorgeous, 4.7-inch 720p display (of the non-PenTile variety), it also features one of the best cameras available in a smartphone and boasts wicked performance. Put simply, the One X adheres most closely to the ideals of the ultimate Engadget smartphone.
Price: $200 (on contract) at AT&T |

[h=4]Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+[/h]We're big believers in unlocked handsets 'round these parts, and now that the Galaxy Nexus is available directly from Google on the Play Store for a mere $399 -- with a full warranty, mind you -- it's a deal that you'd be hard-pressed to refuse. In addition to providing users deliverance from carrier bloatware and being first in line for updates, unlocked smartphones offer owners the unique advantage of using their mobile phone on any compatible network. This particular Galaxy Nexus features a pentaband HSPA+ radio, which means that you'll be ready to roll on either T-Mobile or AT&T, along with a large number of international carriers.
Price: $400 at Google |
|
[h=4]Apple iPhone 4S[/h]Many Engadget editors use the iPhone 4S as their daily driver, and for good reason -- it offers simplistic integration with Apple's incredible ecosystem and access to a selection of apps that's beyond reproach. The phone's famed Retina Display remains a hallmark in the mobile industry for its stunning clarity, and while some may scoff at its 3.5-inch screen size, the iPhone 4S is easily the best choice for those who'd like a compact handset. We're also big fans of its excellent camera and Siri voice assistant. The 16GB iPhone 4S is available from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon for $199, along with a number of regional carriers. Frequent international travelers should seek out the unlocked model directly from Apple, which starts at $649.
Price: $200 to $850 at Apple |
|
[h=4]Nokia Lumia 900[/h]If you'd like to dive into summer with an excellent handset, yet don't want to blow your budget along the way, the Nokia Lumia 900 will be the savior of the season. At just $100 on-contract through AT&T, it's unequivocally the best smartphone deal by a country mile. The vibrant, 4.3-inch ClearBlack display features a polarization filter that'll let you view content in direct sunlight, and its 8-megapixel camera will go a long way toward accurately preserving the memories of your travels. What's more, the Lumia 900 can also access AT&T's speedy LTE network, which you can then use to provide an internet connection to your laptops and tablets.
Price: $99 (on contract) at AT&T |

Well, it's about time that Ice Cream Sandwich made some headway -- even if the process is much slower than consumers deserve. According to the Android developer hub, Android 4.0 now accounts for 7.1 percent of all Android smartphone and tablet installations, which is a sharp and welcome increase over the 2.9 percent figure that we reported just two months ago. Naturally, Gingerbread users still account for the lion's share of the Android ecosystem with 65 percent, but it's worth pointing out that this segment also grew during the last month -- no doubt at the expense of Froyo and Eclair. Don't know about you, but we like our desserts fresh, thank you very much. Go ahead and hop the break to see the full breakdown.

Those who like to swing both ways will be glad to know that SkyDrive for the iPad now supports Apple's gorgeous Retina Display. Now, before you ask why the hell pixel density would be of concern for a cloud storage app, remember that SkyDrive also allows users to view photos and documents from within the application -- only now at a properly rendered 264ppi. In addition to the peeper-pleasing improvement, SkyDrive users will also find the ability to upload multiple photos and videos from their iPad to the cloud, new file-sharing options (either via email, or a link that you can copy and paste), along with the ability to open SkyDrive files from within other iOS apps. It's funny how something so out of place can be so right.

As the middle child from Sony Mobile's NXT family, the Xperia P steps out from behind the Xperia S' shadow with its own 4-inch screen -- and a touch of WhiteMagic. Screen technology aside, the phone's design follows a path very similar to Sony's latest flagship and picks up a few quirks of its own on the way. The see-through button strip is actually touch-sensitive on Sony's 2012 middle-weight -- a curious oversight on the bigger model.
It packs Sony's 8-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor (likely to be the same one found in the Xperia Arc S), a dual-core 1GHz processor and just under 13GB of user-accessible storage. But there's one unfortunate Xperia trait here -- we're still playing with Android Gingerbread, even while its ancestors begin to dip their toes into Ice Cream Sandwich. Does anyone want an incrementally smaller Android phone from Sony? And what exactly is WhiteMagic and what does it mean for the battery life?

New online feature created to replicate the experience of using the new Windows Phone7 ESPN Hub app.
Last October, ESPN and Nokia announced they would pre-load the ESPN Hub on millions of Lumia handsets. The app provides scores, stats, news, analysis and video highlights for more than a dozen sports.
Now, interested users can see how it looks on the web via thus homepage takeover on various ESPN sites. The move is part of an ad campaign ESPN is delivering for Nokia.
The emulator replicates the trademark WinPho tiles and also pulls in live content from the ESPN.co.uk site.
ESPN Hub launched in the US and UK earlier this year, and in recent months has also launched in South Africa, Chile, Columbia, Brazil and Mexico and Indonesia, with launches later this year in the Philippines, Australia and France, among others.
Bryan Biniak, VP, global partnering & application development at Nokia, said: “Our partnership with ESPN brings together world leaders in sports and mobile, to deliver outstanding, exclusive experiences to Nokia Lumia consumers.

Achieved following respective summer launches in 2010 and 2011.
Samsung's flagship line has grown into the world's most desired smartphone – along with iPhone – with the Galaxy S passing 24 million sales in two years, while the S II has hit more than 28 million in just one year.
Meanwhile, its Galaxy Note 'phablet' device has hit the seven million milestone in seven months.
And the signs look good for the future of the brand too. The new Galaxy S III launched this week with nine million pre-orders.
However, it still has a way to go to compete with Apple's most recent quarterly sales of 30 million iPhones.

Test apps to receive individual windows, camera access and in-app payments.
RIM announced the 'Android Runtime for BlackBerry' in Q1, a porting platform for Google OS developers that will allow apps to convert from Android to the PlayBook.
Now, the firm has updated the testing kit, enabling developers to run an app in individual windows to determine how the creation runs in comparison to other runtime apps.
Developers creating photo-based apps will also be able to access the camera technology on the device, while in-app payments are available for users to include virtual items and upgrades as a means of monetising their designs.
In particular, RIM highlights device encryption as a key feature, offering added security for the device and individual runtimes.
The Android BlackBerry partnership will likely provide PlayBook users with a new means of entertainment when it does eventually go live.

We've potentially seen a lot of the next iPhone's exterior; it may be the interior's time for a shakedown, as an unusually detailed rumor out of 9to5 Mac has claimed scads more about the processor and iOS 6. Going by the tips, the 2012 design would use an S5L8950X, a processor with unknown specs but likely a step ahead of what we've seen in the iPhone 4S (8940X) and new iPad (8945X). There would likewise be a new spin on the PowerVR SGX543 graphics from the iPad as well as 1GB of RAM -- which doesn't sound like much next to a 2GB Galaxy S III, but stands to produce a similar speed boost for a lightweight platform like iOS. As for iOS 6 itself, the software is supposedly using underlying code newer than recentOS X Mountain Lion builds and is dumping Google Maps, as some have claimed ever since iPhoto for iOS made that step in the spring. The new Maps app (possibly pictured here) is said to be rough, but the OS as a whole could be coming along so swimmingly that Apple might have no trouble shipping on time.
As always, we're skeptical when so much detail is in flux. The rumor still jives with much more tangible behavior from Apple, such as its experimentation with 32-nanometer processors and a tendency for Apple to refine the chip from the current year's iPad for the iPhone months later. We may know the accuracy soon enough: more leaks are promised in the next two weeks, including an "entirely new iOS app."

It's on Apple's iPhone and iPad, but this is the ITV Player, not the rumored iTV supposedly under development in Cupertino. After initially launching last summer (along with an Android version) offering streaming video on-demand, the UK channel's iOS app has been updated to version 2.0 to offer a live streaming feed of its two channels. Other than just ITV1 and ITV2 over WiFi or 3G, if there's a live event being broadcast that isn't on either, you'll still be able to tune in via the app. Other new features includeAirPlay Mirroring, easier switching between content, improved location detection (to determine what channels are available) and Retina Display quality graphics on the iPad. Unfortunately, The Digital Lifestyle points out catch-up access is still unavailable over 3G, but those with access should grab the new app from iTunes.

Cricket Wireless, the prepaid subsidiary of Leap, has just announced the availability of the iPhone 4 and 4S on its network. When they go on sale June 22nd, a 16GB 4S will set you back $500, while an 8GB 4 clocks in at a slightly more affordable $400. Both are available with Cricket's $55 "unlimited" everything plan, which includes all you can eat talk, text, and data -- provided your idea of "unlimited" data falls within its fair usage policies (in this case, 2.3GB of data). Cricket is hardly alone among America's smaller carriers in offering the iPhone, C-Spire as well as a number of regional carriers all stock Apple's wares. What makes this offering unique, is that Cricket is the first completely prepaid carrier to sell the handset. So, if you want an iPhone, but don't want the contract or the post-paid, usage-based fees? Well then, Cricket might just be your new best friend. Check out the PR after the break and hit up the source for more info.

San Diego Android device will be pitched directly at the mid-range market, priced £199.
It's a pretty significant day for Intel, which has been trying to break into a mobile space dominated by ARM for many years.
The firm's Atom Z2460 processor is the key to this breakthrough. It's been specially designed for use in smartphones, and both Orange and Intel are at pains tp stress its advantages in terms of performance and - most importantly - battery life.
The San Diego, launched next week, features HD Voice, HD Video, 8MP camera with ‘burst’ capture mode, 4.03” capacitive display, A-GPS and Bluetooth 2.1.
It's been built by Asian OEM Gigabyte and continues Orange's commitment to own brand devices. Orange has certainly been the most successful of the UK operators in this regard, claiming around 20 per cent of its phones are now badged Orange.
In terms of UI, the San Diego is a pretty vanilla Android set-up, although it does come with pre-loaded Orange apps such as Orange Wednesdays....

Four in ten continue to burn cash, claiming they can't be bothered to switch to more appropriate price plans.
Price comparison site uSwitch is behind the data, which says 17 million mobile phone users are throwing burning their cash by not making the most of their tariffs.
48 per cent of Brits use just 50 per cent of their monthly minute and text bundles, while a quarter use less than one-fifth of their texts each month and 20 per cent use less than one-fifth of their minutes.
40 per cent have never switched operators to achieve savings, and 41 per cent can't be bothered to make a switch, despite an average £11 monthly saving amounting to £273 over a two-year contract – fast becoming the UK norm.
Two-thirds say the switching process needs to be simplified, while a third claim networks deliberately make it confusing to try and leave, and 27 per cent say operators are too pushy to achieve customer retention.
46 per cent of users move networks to make a saving, while 23 per cent cite poor coverage and 17 per cent say poor customer service.

Norwegian browser firm Opera has expanded its mobile web offerings again, this time with the release of the Opera Mini 7 browser for feature phones, which sports a social dashboard dubbed the 'Smart Page'.
The Smart Page summarises updates from the user's Facebook and Twitter feeds, as well as news site recommendations, while users can also add the feeds of their most-viewed sites.
Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software, said: "I’ve spent hours typing web addresses on my mobile phone, but now there’s a super smart way to get most of your content at a glance.
"With Smart Page, you just open the browser, and the content is right beside your Speed Dial shortcuts in the start screen for you to skim through — super practical, super time-saving and super smart. I guess that’s why the product team called it Smart Page."
While the Smart Page is the flagship side of the browser, Mini 7 users can also perform more conventional tasks such as actual web browsing.

Mobile apps accounted for 43 all gameplay during the period, while 21 million – or 37 per cent – of Brits have played games in the past year.
Additionally, 31 per cent of the UK plays mobile, console and online games, with the latter two securing 68 per cent and 65 per cent respectively.

Oh, we know you've been waiting for this one. Earlier today, Archos announced its kid-friendly Child Pad tablet is finally up for grabs -- which was bound to happen after having passed the FCC's meticulous inspection. In case your brain needs a quick refresh, those $129.99 get your little ones a 7-inch, 800 x 480 screen, Android 4.0, an unpretentious 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of built-in storage (expandable by way of microSD). Obviously, kids are unlikely to focus on the specs side of things, so Archos has done a decent job of including pre-loaded tidbits such as apps, games and "exclusive" Alvin and the Chipmunk 3 content in order to keep them entertained. If you're feeling like this is the one for your child, then hit the source link below to get your order in.

The first plausible pictures of what will likely be called the iPhone 5 have appeared online.
9To5Mac claims to have obtained the snaps from smartphone repair company uBreakiFix.
The main star is the larger screen that stretches from one side of the device to the other without a border. The rear case is also redesigned and is now constructed of both metal and glass.
Also note the new dock connector and, for the first time, a headphone jack mounted on the underside of the device. This, of course, means that any existing iPhone docking device will be incompatible.
BGR adds that “it’s entirely possible these parts are for a non-final version of the handset, but they do perfectly match up with what has been reported about the new iPhone”.

May 30th, 2012, 22:31 Posted By: wraggster
Apple CEO Tim Cook has poured cold water on continuing rumours that the company is plotting an entry into the console gaming market, saying he is "not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming."
Speaking during the D: All Things Digital conference, Cook was asked if, following Apple's huge role in the rapid growth of mobile gaming, he wanted the company to repeat that success on big living-room screens.
"I view that we are in gaming now in a fairly big way," Cook said in response. "One of the reasons people buy an iPod Touch is gaming [but] I realise that is not the big screen you are talking about. Most people play on portable devices. Where we might go in the future, we'll see. Customers love games.
"I'm not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today, and things in the future will only make that bigger."
Cook chose his words carefully, of course, and clearly left the door open for expansion into the living room in future. Given his responses to other questions - where he was far less equivocal, either giving a full, honest answer or batting the question away without comment - it's easy to infer that Apple is, at the very least, contemplating taking on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo head-on.
Yet it would only do so on its own terms. It's hard to see Apple launching a loss-making games console, running around doing exclusivity deals with big developers and publishers as Microsoft did to forcibly gain a foothold in the market. Any move into big-screen gaming appears some way off, with the rumour currently focused on Apple entering the TV market - though an Apple TV, with an integrated App Store, would provide the company with a stealth route into living room gaming.
