A hardcore 11 per cent play for more than two hours a day.
New stats from Lightspeed Research confirm the ongoing rise of the mobile as a games platform.
It reports that 36 per cent of 25-34 year olds, 29 per cent of 35-44 year olds, 18 per cent of 45-54 year olds and 14 per cent of 55-64 year olds say their smartphone is the device they game on most often.
Mind you, for all the mainstream popularity of mobile gaming, it's still the fixed console that's the most popular way to play, with 60 per cent playing these in the past six months.
The figure for smartphones is 47 per cent.
Meanwhile the data showed 52 per cent of respondents have tried social gaming and Facebook remains the dominant platform, particularly for women (49 per cent compared to men at 37 per cent ).

It's been a long, long time since Apple undertook a significant redesign of the iPod touch, which hasn't been looked at since 2010 and received just a splash of white last year. A possible front panel part leak we've just seen could overturn all that -- and hint at the 2012 iPhone's direction in the process. If we go by the claims of MacRumors' supplier friends, the media player would be growing up, but not out, with a taller 4.1-inch screen. We're skeptical, as the white part (black on the inside) seems almost too good to be true -- we haven't seen anything similar elsewhere in the unofficial parts market. Still, having heard murmurs of larger iPhone screens and knowing Apple's own tendency to base the iPod touch on whatever iPhone flavor is new this year, we could be looking at iPhones and iPods growing for the first time since 2007. There's also some as yet unconfirmed next-gen iPhone parts included by the source, although we'd hesitate to call them smoking guns unless they're put together in Apple-like form later in the year.

Google gave its official search app an iPad remake late last year, and now it's smaller iPhone and iPod touch devices getting the new UI's treatment. As of Google Search App 2.0, the smaller iOS devices see a big emphasis on full-screen navigation, with an automatic full-screen mode and a dedicated full-screen photo search making the most of the limited display real estate. You can now swipe back to search results like you could with the iPad, and it's overall much faster in the app to hop between different search types as well as web apps like Calendar or Gmail. There's still something in it for you if you've already been deep into the iPad port's interface, as the tablet and the iPhone alike can now save photos directly to the iOS camera roll. You'll need at least iOS 4.2 to live in Google's non-Android mobile universe, but those that measure up can leap in through the source link.

Having already made headway into the digital frontier last year, video game subscription service GameFly is now ready to expand its sphere of influence into the world of mobile. The company's aspiring for greatness, announcing this morning that it plans to begin publishing iOS and Android titles as early as this summer. And that's not all, folks: we can expect to see the GameFly GameStore, a gaming-oriented competitor to the Play Store and Amazon AppStore, sometime this fall. In addition to its goal of being the biggest and baddest kid on the block, GameFly intends to don the role of philanthropist, setting aside a fund to assist struggling devs who might just need a few extra bucks to finish the next mobile masterpiece. If you fall in this category, the company's already accepting submissions, so read through the press release below to get all the necessary details.

Ustwo's newest title has been accused of being a clone of Johann Sebastian Joust
Ustwo's latest game, Papa Quash, has been accused of being an iOS copy of the PlayStation Move title Johann Sebastian Joust, developed by Die Gute Fabrik. The original is a music-based Move title, where players attempt to move their opponent's Move controller out of the allowable threshold without doing so themselves. Papa Quash is the same style of play, but with players trying to knock an opponent's iPhone or iPod.
Ustwo marketing director Steve Bittan told Gamasutra that the studio developed the title for Sam Pepper, a former Big Brother UK contestant. He insisted that the title was not created in-house.
"Papa Quash was a concept from Sam Pepper. We made the app for Sam Pepper. It's his app. Not ours," Bittan told Gamasutra. "It's not an Ustwo app. It's a Sam Pepper app."
"Sam has a typical fan base. Young and into social media. We asked him to reach out to J. S. Joust and explain his concept which he did. We had assurance everything was ok," he continued. "We told him about J. S. Joust and he emailed them to OK it. After we got that assurance we did service work on it."
There game was launched through Ustwo's App Store account, but bittan says that's because of issue's with Pepper's account.
"He wanted to launch it and we had issues with his account so went with ours so he could reach out to his fans. He is a ex-Big Bro contestant in UK and has a big Twitter and YouTube following. We're in process of getting his account set up," Bittan said.
"We're not into cloning. We genuinely care about what we do and out reputation in the indie community. We're upset about how it's been perceived."
According to the blog Functional Autonomy, Sam Pepper backed up Bittan's claims when asked about the game on Facebook. Die Gute Fabrik has yet to make a full statement on the matter, but it has released a few messages on Twitter.
"Just to be clear, we have never and would never approve, give permission, or encourage anyone to clone of any of our games," said one tweet.
"Sorry for the delayed response, folks. We're working hard to formulate the right words. We'll do everything we can to comment [tomorrow]," they later added.

Announced today and running on an 800 MHz VIA core, the 170 x 85mm 'APC' is expected to ship this July. It has 2GB of flash storage and 512MB of DDR3 memory. 'A modified version of Google Android 2.3 uses up most of that 2GB of flash storage, but there are external storage options. On the back I/O is a microSD slot, and of course you could hook in an external USB 2.0 drive. VIA spent a lot of time customizing Android to enable keyboard and mouse support which natively it does not support. ... On the I/O panel you get VGA output, HDMI output (up to 720p playback with hardware acceleration), four USB 2.0 ports, gigabit LAN and audio out and microphone in.' With a 'Neo ITX' form factor, VIA touts the single-board computer as a 'bicycle for your mind.

Online sales of electrical goods grew by 26 per cent in April, boosted by the lauch of the iPad 3.
According to data from IMRG, cited by ERT Online, the sales were the strongest seen in 18 months with UK shoppers spending a total of £5.7 billion online.
The figures represent a ten per cent year-on-year increase, which fell short of predictions, but it was noted that last April also saw strong sales.
Along with this, mobile sales saw year-on-year growth of over 353 per cent, credited to the increase in the number of retailers offering mobile optimised websites.

Boys are among rising users, presumably texting girls that aren't replying.
Data from Pew Research shows the figure is up from 50 texts per day in 2009, while 75 per cent of all teens – between 12 and 17 – now text.
This spikes for 14-17 year olds that now sent around 100 messages per day in 2011, up from 60 in 2009, while boys send an average of 50 texts, up from 30, and African Americans increased from 60 to 80.
63 per cent of teens send text messages daily, compared to 39 per cent making calls, 35 per cent that meet face-to-face, 29 per cent messaging on social networks and 22 per cent using IMs. Email is the least popular means of communication with just six per cent.
The number of users making calls is declining, but 69 per cent of the heaviest texters – over 100 sent a day – also make calls everyday, compared to 43 per cent of light texters – those sending 0-20 texts per day.
Meanwhile, 23 per cent of 12-17 year-olds now own a smartphone, rising to 31 per cent for 14-17 year-olds.

Carphone Warehouse claims 'thousands' of customers reserved a device within 24 hours of its unveiling.
Last week, Samsung claimed nine million Galaxy S III pre-orders ahead of the release next week. It took the Galaxy S II five months to reach ten million sales.
Now, Europe's largest phone retailer Carphone Warehouse reckons demand for the S III has been off the charts, with thousands of customers handing their requests in to over 800 stores.
Graham Stapleton, chief commercial officer, Carphone Warehouse, said: "Pre-order demand for the new Galaxy S III has surpassed expectations since the handset was first unveiled two weeks ago. The first 24 hours alone saw thousands placing their pre-order at Carphone Warehouse.
"The Galaxy S III is without a doubt the fastest selling pre-order of 2012 so far. We're gearing up for an exceptionally busy launch day at the end of the month as the handset lands on shelves at our stores across the UK."
Pre-order customers can receive the device on May 29th, with general release taking place on the 30th.

Fruit Ninja might not really need updating – it's pretty feature-complete if there is fruit for you to slice, and you can slice it – but Halfbrick is adding content to the mobile game anyway in honor of its two-year anniversary. The new update will be live May 24.
Gutsu and Truffles join the cast (in other words, Sensei), bringing with them a shop where you can purchase powerups that add time, deflect bombs, or explode, in exchange for Starfruit, a new currency that you earn in-game.
Speaking of currency, Halfbrick is handing out the iPhone game at no cost right now on its anniversary website. The offer is limited, but we'd be surprised if this Starfruit update weren't leading into an optional microtransaction-based system like that in Jetpack Joyride.

Still rockin' Windows Phone 6.x? Time to check all your apps for updates one last time. Microsoft has issued a final reminder that, beginning today, the Marketplace for 6.x devices will no longer be available. This means you won't be able to browse, buy or download apps from your phone via the service. Everything you already have will, of course, work just fine, but if you needed to reinstall something -- now is the time to do it. Unless it's available direct from third party sites, in which case you'll have a little breathing space. Still, better safe than sorry.

We've been twiddling our thumbs waiting patiently for the littlest of Sony's new-look smartphone lineup, the Xperia U, to arrive in earnest. It's a bit of a relief then to see the Android 2.3 phone go on sale atThree UK. You'll be getting what we saw back in Barcelona, including Sony's Timescape interface and the trick color light-up strip. We're guessing that most will see the cheap-as-chips price as the real selling point: the Xperia U costs £170 ($269) without a plan, and it's free as in beer on a two-year contract for£23 ($36) per month. O2, Orange and T-Mobile will expand UK carrier choices soon, but if you're looking for a fresh entry point into Android, Three can take care of you today.

Ben Heck is always thinking up gadgets that make life easier, from completely hands-free luggage to asensor system for improved cycling safety. His latest mod is meant for those of us who have burnt Ramen a few too many times. His so-called Ben-Stur Remote Control Android app works with a pot-stirring device, freeing users to stray from the kitchen while their meal is cooking. The app works via Bluetooth, and the pot-stirrer consists of an actuator arm, a chip clip, a timing belt and, of course, a wooden spoon. Heck used a Google ADK and an Arduino Uno for the control mechanism that communicates between the app and the stirrer. In the tablet app, users can check their food's temperature and control the speed of the the spoon's stirring. If that whets your appetite, click the source link for more info -- and check out our Maker Faire interview with Mr. Heckendorn himself.

Android and PlayStation Vita owners have felt the Music Unlimited love on their respective devices for quite some time now, but the Spotify / MOG / Rdio competitor has finally made its way to the App Store, bringing with it yet another option for streaming music on iOS. The free app appears to be optimized for iPhone and iPod touch (though it's also compatible with iPad), and will enable on-the-go jammin' with a $4-per-month Basic subscription over 3G, 4G or WiFi connections. You can pull in tunes from the millions of tracks in Sony's collection, or access songs on your PC using the Music Sync service. The app is currently only available in the New Zealand App Store, but it's expected to hit other Music Unlimited countries soon. For now, you can hit up the source link for the Kiwi App Store preview, or head over to the Music Unlimited site to sign up.

When we first caught word of the gTar, it was a bit of a mystery, with an online presence amounting to little more than a low-res press shot, an enigmatic YouTube teaser and assorted specs coming out of South By Southwest and various investor sites. This week, however, brings TechCrunch Disrupt to town -- and Incident Technologies has braved some unseasonable New York City storms to come along for the ride. We managed to snag some time with the iPhone-docking instrument ahead of its debut on stage this afternoon.
Details are still a little scarce -- but here's what we know: the company is looking for a summer release for the educational instrument. In the meantime, Incident has thrown up a Kickstarter page, so you can get in on the action. A limited number of investors can get their hands on a unit for the low, low donation price of $350, once it goes into production. That's $100 off the estimated $450 retail price point -- not cheap, sure, but there are a couple of things to note here. First, we played with the gTar for a bit and we can say, definitively, that this isn't just some cheap, plasticky toy -- this feels like a real, amateur-level electric guitar. Also, for whatever it's worth, that price also includes a backpack carrying case -- so that's something, right?

Those dying to play Diablo 3 online don't need to sit by their PCs to see if the servers are up and running anymore. A Diablo 3 server-checking app, aptly named "Diablo 3 Server Checker," is now available for free (ad-supported) on Google Play for Android devices.
Developed by Eluamous, creator of other server-checking apps for games likeWorld of Warcraft, the app pulls status messages from US.Battle.net to view updates from Diablo 3 servers in the US, Europe, and Asia. The app also includes a widget for use on the home screen of Android devices.
The app is in obvious response to the recent server issues Blizzard has been dealing with.

There’s no question that Apple has their industrial design down pat; comparing a cell phone charger made by Blackberry or Motorola to the tiny 1-inch-cube Apple charger just underscores this fact. [Ken Shirriff] posted a great teardown of the Apple iPhone charger that goes through the hardware that makes this charger so impressive.
Like most cell phone chargers and power supplies these days, Apple’s charger is a switching power supply giving it a much better efficiency than a simple ‘transformer, rectifier, regulator’ linear power supply. Inside the charger, mains power is converted to DC, chopped up by a control IC, fed into a flyback transformer and converted into AC, and finally changed back into DC, and finally filtered and sent out through a USB port.
The quality of the charger is apparent; there’s really no way this small 1-inch cube could be made any smaller. In fact, if it weren’t for the microscopic 0402 SMD components, it’s doubtful this charger could be made at all.
Comparing the $30 iPhone charger of a cheap (and fake) iPhone charger, the budget charger still uses a flyback transformer but there are serious compromises of the safety and quality. The fake charger doesn’t use a power supply controller IC and replaces the four bridge diodes for a single diode to rectify the AC; a very efficient cost-cutting measure, but it does lead to a noisier power supply.
There’s also the issue of safety; on the Apple charger, there is a (relatively) huge physical separation of ~340 VDC and your phone. With the off-brand charger, these circuits are separated by less than a millimeter – not very safe, and certainly wouldn’t be UL approved.
It’s worth pointing out that [Ken] compares a similar $7 Samsung charger favorably to the $30 Apple charger. Both are functionally identical, but Apple also has their marketing down pat, to say the least.
Tip ‘o the hat to [George] for sending this in.
EDIT: In case a 1-inch cube wasn’t impressive enough, check out the euro version of the iPhone/iPad charger. It supplies 1A @ 5V, and isn’t much thicker than the USB port itself. Thanks [Andreas] for bringing this to our attention. If anyone wants to do a teardown of the euro version, send it in on the tip line.

Going by Microsoft's Greater China COO Michel van der Bel, the launch of Windows Phone in China is off to an auspicious start -- enough to give Apple the shakes. He claims that devices like the Nokia Lumia 800c have helped Windows Phone reach seven percent of the Chinese market, or just enough to get past the six points of the iPhone. We're waiting on hard data before we take van der Bel's word: the top smartphone makers worldwide aren't depending much or at all on Windows Phone, and the iPhone has athriving gray market in China that masks some of its real numbers. Having said this, we've seen signs of Windows Phone enjoying a bit of a surge even in an iOS- and Android-loving Europe, so we'll be watching to see if there's an uptick in the number of buyers saying ni hao to Microsoft in the near future.
