The New iPod Touch
With a stunningly thin, contoured stainless steel design, iPod touch feels even better in your hand. And the new volume buttons and built-in speaker give you more to love. Groundbreaking technologies built into iPod touch — such as the Multi-Touch display, accelerometer, and 3D graphics — immerse you in the action. The new Genius feature turns iPod touch into a highly intelligent, personal DJ. With a few taps, it creates a playlist by finding songs in your library that go great together.
More ways to play.
iPod touch games and applications are nothing short of amazing. And the App Store is where you’ll find them all. The world’s best developers are taking advantage of groundbreaking technology, including Multi-Touch, the accelerometer, real-time 3D graphics, and 3D positional sound, to create games and applications made especially for iPod touch. So whether you’re a gamer or into something else — chatting, social networking, news, sports, finance — there’s bound to be something just for you.
Volume controls.
Volume buttons are built into the left side of iPod touch, giving you easy access to the most frequently used controls.
Built-in speaker.
A built-in speaker lets you hear the music, dialogue, and action without headphones, perfect for casual listening.
Longer battery life.
Now you can keep on rocking (and watching and playing) even longer. Improved battery life means iPod touch provides up to 36 hours of audio playback or 6 hours of video playback — enough to watch three or four movies between charges.
Music
Remember what it felt like to flip through your CD or record collection? Cover Flow brings that feeling back. Just turn iPod touch on its side and flick through your music to find the album you want to hear. Tap the cover to flip it over and display a track list. Tap again to start the music. Even view the lyrics while you’re listening. A musical Genius - say you’re listening to a song you really like and want to hear other tracks that go great with it. The new Genius feature finds the songs in your library that go great together and makes a Genius playlist for you. You can listen to the playlist right away, save it for later, or even refresh it and give it another go. Count on Genius to create a mix you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.
Movies + TV Shows
Everything’s a must-see. Carry hours of video with you and watch it on a crisp, clear 3.5-inch colour widescreen display. Download and watch TV shows from the iTunes store. Buy a single episode or an entire season’s worth all at once. While watching your video, tap the display to bring up the onscreen controls. You can play/pause, view by chapter, and adjust the volume. You can also use the new volume controls on the left side of iPod touch. Want to switch between widescreen and full screen? Simply tap the display twice. Need some entertainment for your next flight or road trip? With iTunes on your Mac or PC, you can sit at your computer and choose the TV shows you want to sync to your iPod touch.
Internet
iPod touch is the only iPod with 802.11b/g wireless access to the web. Whenever you’re connected via Wi-Fi, you can access you’re favourite websites to read news, check scores, pay bills, and go shopping. Pod touch syncs your bookmarks from your PC or Mac, so you can access favourite sites quickly. It has Google and Yahoo! search built in, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for on the web. Get a closer look at any web page by zooming in and out with a tap or a pinch of the Multi-Touch display. View websites in portrait or landscape. Rotate iPod touch 90 degrees and the website rotates, too. If you check a website frequently — a favourite newspaper, blog, or sports site — why not create a Home screen icon for it? Make Web Clips with Safari, and your favourite sites are always just a tap away.
High technology
Built to take full advantage of the large 3.5-inch display, the Multi-Touch touchscreen interface lets you control everything using only your fingers. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely. The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the LCD screen below it. iPod touch software enables the flick, tap, and pinch. iPod touch features an intelligent touchscreen keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, getting directions on a map, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, or adding new contacts. It analyses keystrokes to suggest words as you type and correct spelling errors automatically. And because it’s software based, it changes its keys to support typing in multiple languages.
Rock ’n’ run with Nike+.
Pod touch now includes built-in Nike + iPod support. Just slip the Nike + iPod Sensor (available separately) into your Nike+ shoe and start your run. The sensor communicates wirelessly with your iPod touch, tracking your time, distance, and calories burned. It even gives you voice feedback on your progress.

Even your photos rock.
Pull hundreds of photos from your pocket and share them wherever you go. Hold iPod nano upright and see your photos in portrait view. Turn it on its side to see them in landscape. Your photos look beautiful in their proper aspect ratio on the vibrant, 320-by-240-resolution display

!'ve said it before (although possibly not in public) and I'll say it again - turn-based games are a natural fit for mobile gaming. Any gaming device that you have to slip quickly in your pocket in case you get mugged demands a stable of games that you can take at whatever pace you like.
Perilar is a nostalgic nod back to the early Ultima games, without which we would arguably not have Fallout 3, Ultima Online and Richard Garriot being sick all over a cosmonaut. Turn-based RPG adventuring, quests, leveling up, the whole kit and kaboodle.
The iPhone bereft need not despair - Perilar is a conversion of a freeware Java game - JPerilar - still available for download here. If only there was a decent Java VM for the iPhone you could save yourself $5.

my bedroom recreations of "Pocket Calculator" (nay, Taschenrechner) will be blessed with the added touch of reality they so obviously deserve: a Stylophone, the late-60s pantheon of touch-controlled synthesizers, is coming to the App Store in December for $6. Music geeks are really going all out on this platform, and I like it.

While the vast majority of iPhone customers opt for all-inclusive (but expensive) contracts, those miserly pay as you go customers that depend on the $20 MEdia Net unlimited data add-on to save money in the long term will be upset to find that, as of November 12th, they won't have that option. AT&T has decided to end the service, which — though never intended for use with the iPhone — was the sole reason that many people could justify paying the full unsubsidized price, because it was relatively unpopular. The announcement was made in a text sent to MEdia Net users:

T-Mobile sold right out of its original allotment of G1 pre-orders quick, fast and in a hurry, and even the second round has been claimed in a flash. What's it all mean? It means that someone at T-Mobile and Google are sitting in a fancy restaurant in France sipping on the good stuff, and it also means that 1.5 million G1s have already been reserved for eager early adopters. In addition to that, another couple of million are all set to take the retail scene by storm later this month. In other words, folks are genuinely stoked about the possibilities of Android, and scads of 'em have already committed to the OS (and HTC's design, by extension) before even having a chance to toy around with it in person. No pressure at all, Google.

When your battery fails on your iPhone you either have to void your warranty and replace it yourself (assuming you have the technical knowledge) or have Apple replace the battery for you.
The European Union doesn't seem to like the idea of a non-removable batteries in mobile phones and is considering the creation of a requirement that all mobile phone's must have easily replaceable batteries. If passed through this directive could force Apple to make the iPhone battery more easily replaceable via a rear cover that slides off or a couple screws allowing access to the battery. The battery would also need some sort of connector to allow easy swapping instead of the current design that has the battery soldered in.

AdWeek reports Google has been talking to ad agencies recently touting a new ad format - specifically for the iPhone. The guys at Google won't confirm, although they do say its something they're considering.
Google's love for the iPhone has been evident from their continued refinement of their iPhone version of the site. With over 10 million iPhone's sold in 2008, Google would do well to continue their focus on the device.

If you have a new 4th-gen nano and a decent ear, you may have noticed something funny: After putting it to sleep, if you wake it up by inserting headphones, the left and right channels switch. I tried this with the most obvious stereo mix of all time, David Bowie's "Space Oddity," and it's really easy to duplicate yourself. While it's easy to correct, it's still definitely a weird, weird bug. Thanks to reader Matt for bringing it to our attention, and posting a thread at iLounge. Have you noticed it or any other weird glitches, like Genius' pathological avoidance of the lovely Norah Jones? (I'm serious, try it!)

The iPhone as the ultimate portable gaming platform - discuss.
There have been a few minor gems since the iPhone 3G arrived and Steve Jobs made his bold claim, but the Boing Boing Gadgets crew seem rather taken with action/strategy title Galcon.
The game is a conversion of the desktop title for Windows, OSX and Linux and offers fast-paced Risk-like gameplay with an emphasis on short-burst battles - just the thing for a quick bus journey but with solid enough strategy element to keep you coming back.
The game costs just $5 (compared to $20 for the desktop incarnation) and there is a 'Lite' version available as a free demo through the App Store.

The South Park guys clearly get it. They've already put every episode ever online for free. Now they've come up with a snazzy South Park iPhone app Xeni at BoingBoing got the first look at. While it doesn't look like it'll stream or download full episodes (yet), it'll grab clips, snag wallpapers, drop news and do other wackiness, like assign Butters' face as your awkward roommate's picture. Overall, it looks pretty slick and Xeni says it "functioned beautifully," but what'd make it truly killer is being able to stream full episodes.

While this iPhone security hole isn't nearly as gaping as the last one we covered (which was fixed by Apple), it too exploits the emergency call feature in password-protected mode. In password-protected mode, there's an option to disable SMS preview, so if someone picks up your locked phone, they can't see incoming text messages. However, if you activate a locked phone's emergency call mode, and it receives a text message, it'll show you the full text in preview. And yes, this is with 2.1. Again, a sorta minor security oversight, but if you're super-secret about your texts (for whatever reasons), this is definitely a problem and needs to be fixed in the next update.
