Microsoft's Robbie Bach feigned an uninterested yawn at Apple's 6.9 million iPhones figure in an interview with BusinessWeek the other day. He wasn't particularly insulting of the product, but didn't think the number means too much in the long run. "Apple had a big launch of a new product, and they launched at scale in a lot of new countries with a lot of new [wireless] operators. This quarter, RIM is having its big launch, and at some point we'll have our big launch. We'll have to see where things normalize." While that statement is encouraging for the fact that it semi-implies that Windows Mobile 7 is supposed to be released at "some point," we're not sure we're picking up what Robbie is putting down -- 6.9 million of a single device seems to imply a bit more than "launch buzz." Things devolved quickly when Bach started spouting about how carriers want a balanced ecosystem. That may be true, but consumers are the ones that buy the phones, and if their RAZR buying habits are any indication, "ecosystem" isn't their top priority.

We're going out on a limb here and assuming that the Haute Diggity Dog iBone comes jailbroken and ready to rock, or at least that's the impression we get from checking out that heretofore unseen bevy of icons. Customized for the "tech savvy dog on the go," this here iPhone chew toy gives dear Fido access to bark / hand-shake training, posture lessons, Washington Huskies sports updates (it's the Clemson Tigers in all honesty, but work with us here), a mysterious fitness app and a bone application for times when supper just seems too far away. You know your pup's worth the $11.95, you just know it.

Sure, we've seen a lot of product announcements from Hop-on accompanied by janky product renders over the years -- but we've never seen an actual Hop-on phone, so we're a little skeptical of the company's promise this morning to release an Android phone at CES this year. What's more, it's supposed to come in under $200, which is right in character for a manufacturer whose major claim to fame is the "disposable" cell phone, we suppose. We'll see if such a phone actually appears at the show -- Hop-on boldly says this mythical device will make it "competitive in the high-end phone market," which is probably sending shock waves through the offices of HTC, Apple, and RIM as we speak.

It's no secret that UIQ effectively died when it merged into the Symbian Foundation earlier this year. But at a Symbian event this week in London, Sony Ericsson reiterated that the platform is destined for certain death and mentioning that it "didn’t attract the operator, manufacturer or consumer interest needed to stop it from failing

A recent survey taken by Nokia claimed that 53% of Americans have taken business calls in the bathroom. Of those surveyed, 60% never shut off their mobile devices. To be honest, I would have thought that second figure would be higher—but all-in-all the results of this survey are no surprise. Most of us feel the need to be constantly connected. We take our phones with us everywhere, ready to go at a moments notice. So, I am curious: do you ever turn off your cellphone?

A few months ago we ran a rumor in which Steve Jobs had written a reader promising that Apple was working on iPhone tethering for 3G laptop browsing. Now, according to a MacBlogz, a reliable source from inside AT&T has informed them that iPhone tethering is being delayed because AT&T isn't prepared to meet the 3G demand.

The folks at Medialets have put together a number-crunching comparison of the iPhone App Store and the Android Marketplace after the first 24 hours. There is nothing really Earth-shattering in the data, but it does provide some insight into the similarities between iPhone and G1 users. Basically, it illustrates that both parties are interested in the same sorts of apps, given the fact that the distributions are fairly similar. One could draw the conclusion that Android users are more into lifestyle and productivity-based functionality, but without detailed information comparing the number of these apps released by both platforms at launch, this assessment is probably a bit premature.

One of first apps I grab on a smartphone—or com, whatever—is Facebook. It's pretty excellent on the iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm (though most excellentest on the iPhone), so you'd expect it to show up pronto on Android where it would also be awesome. But apparently that's not going to happen—whether it's because of bad mojo between Google and Facebook or not—TechCrunch reports that "Facebook has dedicated exactly zero resources to creating a version of the service for Android, and has no plans to launch anything at all." That's a charitable way to put their feelings.

The G1 certainly has a lot going for it, but we were a bit taken aback by its lack of an on-screen keyboard -- even a short text requires you to flip the screen out and hit the physical keys. That looks like it might change soon, though -- a rough roadmap posted on the new Android source repository has soft keyboard support penciled in for the the first three months of next year. It's not a lot to go on -- the timeline is described as "initial thoughts" and subject to change as the community gets involved -- but it's good to see that El Goog is already thinking about improving the Android user experience. Now, any coders out there want to pitch in and make this happen even sooner?

It looks like getting up and running on an unactivated G1 is going to be a little easier than Apple made it for iPhone users. No jailbreak required. All you really need to do is beg, steal or borrow an active T-Mobile SIM card and slip it in the phone for the duration of the setup process (it should only take a few minutes). Once you've enabled WiFi you can go back to your old SIM: you're ready to browse the web, run your apps and do everything you expect your Android-powered phone to do (except talk on the phone). If you'd like to get in on this action, check out the read link for the step-by-step instructions.

While the G1 has an excellent keyboard, that's not stopping many users from complaining that they cannot type in landscape mode (notably, the decision to omit the virtual keyboard was to coax users to use the QWERTY hardware). Luckily, the Android development roadmap reveals that we'll be getting a touchscreen keyboard in Q1 2009 featuring "a dictionary of suggestions and a suggestion algorithm." In other words, it'll work a lot like the iPhone keyboard, which is a good thing.

Sturgeon's Law states that "Ninety percent of everything is crap". I don't think I am being too controversial by suggesting that if Theodore Sturgeon had ever encountered mobile phone games he would have revised upwards.
There are decent games out there, but there is a lot of dross - derivative, badly designed and poorly implemented.
Nokia want to change all that. They have been running the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge - a competition that asks developers to submit their most innovative game designs for - running under Symbian or Java on N-Gage or standard Nokia handsets

Mark Ecko Productions and Showtime have given us our first look at the first game based on Showtime's Dexter — which is in turn based on the book series by author Jeff Lindsay — and, well, it's the iPhone version. Sorry if we got your hopes up, but it may make anticipation for the console versions that much higher.
Dexter, in development at Icarus Studios, is "'investigative' in style," a game in which "the player will analyze crime scenes, uncover evidence, and choose which brand of justice best suits the situation: the courts or the 'Dark Passenger.'" Think we're going to go with "Dark Passenger" by default. Wonder if there's a default setting for that.

The first update to the new Android-wielding G1 will be beamed OTA starting tomorrow to all G1 customers, with updates going out through October 31st. It's warned to be a very minor update, featuring various light "enhancements" and a bug fix related to Amazon songs. That's it. T-Mobile warns, "Before you go nuts, remember this is only the first [update]. Let's make sure updates download, install, and just plain work as designed before we expect them to overhaul your experience." Since we don't want our phones to explode, it's a deal.

Being that the T-Mobile G1 launched officially today in the US of A, it makes sense that the phone's marketplace for applications would open its doors as well. A recent post over at the Android Developers Blog has affirmed that users can now indulge in over 50 apps, and moreover, it has laid out details surrounding the process for getting your own app in there. Beginning on Monday, prospective devs will be forced to "register and pay a one time $25 application fee" in order to ensure that they're "authenticated and responsible for their apps." After that, the programs will be "made available to users without further validation or approval."
Starting in Q1, developers will be able to distribute paid apps in addition to free apps, and similar to Apple's revenue model, devs will get 70% of the revenue, though it should be noted that Google won't be taking a percentage of the remainder. Go at it, you eager developer you -- we fully expect a gratis app showing off your handiwork to emerge on the 27th.

If you simply can't go anywhere without listening to your iPod, H2O Audio's new iDive 300 system will ensure that the tunes keep coming even as your lifeless body sinks into Davy Jones' locker. Features include a polycarbonate casing that uses a locking cam knob to ensure a watertight seal up to a 300 foot depth, an integrated microprocessor for complete control of touch-screen and click wheel iPods and over ear speakers that can be attached to mask strap or tucked under a dive hood. The iDive retails for $350 which is steep for a case, but at least H2O Audio has a reputation for making decent products.
