Today, SanDisk unveiled an advanced flash file system for solid-state drives (SSDs) that yields dramatic improvement in performance and reliability for computing applications. This next generation of patented flash management is called ExtremeFFS, and has the potential to accelerate random write speeds by up to 100 times over existing systems.
It has been discussed by reliable sources that the reason it takes so long to copy media to the iPhone is flash's slow write speeds. This is theorized because the relatively slow write speed of flash can have a bottleneck effect at certain times during certain applications and uses, although most of the time write operations are "fire and forget."
Recently, flash has made improvements in write speeds, but NAND flash will always be somewhat challenged in this aspect, because the way that writes work with the technology. In order to write data to a nonempty flash sector, you have to first erase that sector and then write to the... [Read More]

How big are cell phones in Japan? If Final Fantasy IV The After is any indication, pretty damn big. An episode sequel to Final Fantasy IV, the cell phone title has been downloaded over 2 million times and is available for Japanese carrier DoCoMo's FOMA 903i and 703i series as well as for carrier AU's WIN BREW series. It was released earlier this year in February, and new "chapters" appear on a near monthly basis.

It's been less than two weeks since T-Mobile's G1 hit shelves, and Android's already been jailbroken. Folks over at the xda-developers forum discovered an easy way to start telnet on the device, log in as root and get full system access and read and write. While the Googlephone is nowhere near as restricted as the iPhone, there were apparently still a few walls that needed to be broken down and now, anything goes. Check out modmygphone for the full list of jailbreak instructions.

If you're one of those people always complaining about the iPhone keyboard (the lack of one, that is), then this is probably a vital piece of news, even if it's not totally practical. Or practical in any way, actually. Some very enterprising citizen of the world seems to be running a chunk of Ruby code on his jailbroken iPhone 3G, which allows it to recognize what appears to be a Palm / Visor external keyboard connected via a custom cable. The results of this intense bit of modification? Well -- not much, honestly, but it's still kinda cool. "Hello Keyboard," indeed. Check out the video of it in action after the break, here.

I didn't expect much from games on the iPhone. I had visions of casual games, perhaps a fancy take on solitaire or a version of poker that takes advantage of the handset's touchscreen. Surely not a true mobile gaming experience.
Boy, was I wrong. For the last few days I've been sampling some of the games available from the iTunes Store on the iPod Touch, and I've been stunned at how elaborate and involved they are. On the iPod Touch I've played a version of Gameloft's Real Soccer 2009 that rivals the version of the game on the Nintendo DS, and I didn't even miss the buttons. I've seen demonstrations of Sim City, forthcoming for the iPhone and the Touch from Electronic Arts (ERTS), that look more elaborate and sophisticated than any versions I've played before on a desktop PC or console.
They're immersive, addictive fun. And it's now readily apparent to me that the iPhone and iPod Touch are well on their way to becoming an important force in handheld gaming. When you consider the ease and reach of Apple's (AAPL) online method for distributing games, Apple could do in this category what it did in online music, causing big headaches for the genre's established players, Sony (SNE) and Nintendo.
Apple's come a long way in short order. In the three months and change since the iTunes App Store opened for business, it's already home to some 1,500 games, compared with fewer than 300 titles for Sony's PlayStation Portable and about 600 for Nintendo's handheld console, the DS.
Apple's Gaming Advantages
The iPhone maker is also holding its own when it comes to units sold. Based on sales data and analysts' projections, Apple is on track to sell an easy 40 million devices or more a year that are capable of playing games.
Nintendo sold 42 million DS consoles during the 18 months from January 2007 to June 2008, according to market research firm iSuppli. So Apple is on pace to sell about as many game-capable handhelds in a single year as Nintendo, the market's current leader, has sold in the most recently reported 18 months. This suggests that Apple could be on the cusp of claiming the crown as the world's market leader in handheld gaming.
Now look at Apple's advantages over competitors. Apple already has more titles for its games than both of the other two combined. And aside from the free ones, games on the App Store sell at prices ranging up to $9.99 and sometimes a little more. Compare that with the $20 to $40 for Nintendo DS games and the $10 to $40 for games on the PSP.
And with Apple selling via iTunes, there are no costs associated with the distribution of physical media. All games are downloaded directly to the device. And in the event the game is buggy, the developer can easily issue an easy-to-download fix. The developer gets 70% of the sale and Apple keeps 30%, with no one else to get in the middle. Nintendo and Sony partners have to worry about shelf space at stores, shipping, returns, defective merchandise, and even the occasional shoplifter.
On a revenue comparison, Apple's gaming sales will be much smaller than at Sony or Nintendo because the price of individual games is so much lower. What's more, not everyone who buys an iPhone or a Touch will also buy games. But the potential game sales per iPhone user will be higher because of the price differential. In its most recent quarter, Sony sold 3.18 million PSPs and about 12 million games for an average of fewer than four games per device.
Apple's Impact on the Gaming Industry
While there's no data yet on specific iPhone game sales, users of the iPhone are heavier gamers than those of other phones. A survey by iSuppli's ConsumerTrak found that U.S. cell-phone users report spending less than 3% of phone-use time on games. But that average shoots up considerably to more than 9% on the first iPhone and 6% on the iPhone 3G. (That's still less time than iPhone owners spend on e-mail, texting, or talking.)
How big an impact can Apple have? "They're not going to put Sony or Nintendo out of business," says Van Baker, a gaming analyst at Gartner Group (IT). Both companies have strong and thriving home-console businesses.
And the iPhone and Touch aren't ideal gaming devices. They're also made for calling, Web access, and e-mail. And both lack buttons, which arguably would give players more control over complex in-game moves and maneuvers. (But the iPhone and the Touch have the multitouch screen and the accelerometer, which allow for some pretty fancy moves of their own).
Nor are Apple's newly spawned gaming devices cheap. The iPod Touch starts at $229 and the iPhone 3G starts at $199 and requires a two-year service contract. The Nintendo DS goes for $129 while the PSP goes for $170 to $200. But once you add the cost of games, and in the case of the PSP, a $30-to-$40 Memory Stick, the iPhone's price begins to look competitive. Then the iPhone also has iTunes, which includes easy access to music, movies, TV shows, and more games all the time.
It's enough to make me wonder whether Apple is on its way to conquering yet another sector of the consumer-technology business from out of nowhere. We'll certainly know more after the holiday season, but if I worked for the Sony or Nintendo handheld gaming divisions, I'd be watching the holiday sales figures closely.

Elecont Dialer allows users to organize phone contacts directly on Home/Today screen. Contacts can be easily accessed by touching it with finger or stylus or selecting it by joystick. Elecont Dialer shows contacts in multiple layouts, optimized for different screen sizes. Most interesting feature is display mode with touch-controlled sliding effect, which takes only 1 line of Today screen. It saves screen space for other plugins

If you're concerned about sensitive data you may have stored on your phone, be it bank details, email addresses or photographs of a secret underground lair, British IT innovator Virtuity has come up with a rather nifty 'Mission Impossible' style solution.
If a phone is lost or stolen, the software can detect where it is anywhere in the world using WiFi and GSM communications and start deleting any information that might be dangerous in the wrong hands.
It adheres to US Department of Defence standards for data removal and once complete a report is sent back with information on what was erased and where the phone is.
Initially it'll be released for Windows Mobile devices that offer business application but this will be expanded and development is already underway for the Symbian OS.
BackStopp also offers software that'll do a similar job for laptops and its applications come with handy features such as encryption and the fact that it's 'always on' and not reliant on an internet connection to work.

We’re still getting acquainted with our T-Mobile G1, discovering all the little nuances that the Android OS has to offer. But, there’s just something missing from the Android platform… what could it be?
A GameBoy emulator!
One of the first applications launched for the iPhone was a GameBoy emulator. The application was an unofficial release available only to iPhone owners that had jailbroken (and thus opened up access to the file system) their handsets. The iPhone GameBoy emulator was restricted to jailbreak-circles due to its dubious legality and the non-sanctioned SDK tools used to develop the application, but it was a decent success in its own right. It sure would be nice if someone developed a GameBoy emulator for Android.
Fortunately, there already is a GameBoy emulator for Android. All hail AndroidBoy! Regardless of any legal obstacles, AndroidBoy is now available through Google’s official Android application store - Android Market. The availability of AndroidBoy on the Android Market is a testament to Google’s decidedly more open stance on Android development than Apple’s lock-down policy on the iPhone OS.
AndroidBoy supports original GameBoy games as well as more recent GameBoy Color gaming titles - turning your T-Mobile G1 into a veritable Super GameBoy! Fire up the Android Market application and download AndroidBoy today.

See it’s not just us. Apparently everyone is into their iPhone for games, well at 25 percent of iPhone owners have downloaded a game for the device. Sure that’s really not even close to everyone, but it sure as heck beats out cellphones which, according to a recent survey, can only say that six percent of owners have downloaded a game.
Game developers have created nearly 1,700 games for the iPhone since its release, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times today. That’s more than twice the number available in the App Store’s second biggest category.

The iPhone OS 2.2 is taking shape at a good rhythm. The user interface is being refined and development of new features keeps going on steady. While I'm sure most of us can only think "copy and paste! copy and paste! copy and paste!" and increased speed and reliability, there are a few new things that we would definitely like to have as soon as possible

Carphone Warehouse looks set to give away free smartphones running Windows Mobile 7 with copies of the upcoming Windows 7 PC operating system, Register Hardware has learned. A phone manufacturer source familiar with the phone retailer's plans told us that the Windows Mobile 7 phone and Windows 7 bundle boxes will be released on the same day that the new desktop OS is launched in the UK, which he said could come during September or October 2009."

Had to happen. A version of the venerable PC classic Dope Wars has come to the iPhone. Except this "homage" has the even less acceptable moniker of Drug Lords, and takes advantage of the phone's location-tracking to keep your drug prices fresh no matter where your shivering, aimless shambling takes you. Don't expect this in the App Store any time soon.

FastMac has unveiled their second generation iV battery pack for the iPhone 3G, and it promises to deliver up to 24 hours of talk time, 750 hours (31 days) of standby, 20+ hours of video and almost 72 hours of audio playback time. Depending on your settings, we are talking triple or even quadruple the available power here. It looks a little bulkier than Mophie's Juice Pack, but the extra battery life and added touches like a built-in LED flash/flashlight and a second USB port to charge additional gadgets definitely makes it the more attractive option on paper (a hands-on will be coming up shortly to put this to the test). Plus, it is priced less than the Juice Pack at $80.
