What you are you seeing in these screenshots may seem like a real iPhone application, but it's not. It's a web page displayed in full screen, completely out of Safari, behaving and looking exactly as any native iPhone program would do. The best thing: It is not a new feature of the incoming iPhone OS 2.2 update: The secret feature is "hidden" in the current 2.1 version and only requires one thing: HTML code embedded in the web page itself. No iPhone modification is required. If you are browsing this from the iPhone, you can try it yourself very easily:

I think it is safe to say that design student Kyle Buckner is more than just an iPhone user—he is an iPhone worshiper. After all, the iPhone sits atop his elaborate wood-carved pedestal like a King on his throne. Is this the beginning of some sort of cult? Will there be robes and chanting? Truth be told, the sculpture was carved for a school project—but throw an actual dock in there and Buckner would be the envy of Apple superfans everywhere.

We've seen a few accessories for augmenting the gaming experience on the iPhone which would give the device awesome functions similar to a game controller, such as the elusive and yet-to-materialize iControlPad and the totally fake JoyPod. Well, Marware's Game Grip is sort of like that -- silicone sleeves that your phone fits into -- except that it doesn't actually do anything beyond providing 'handles' for your phone while you game. Oh, and it exists. So let's refer to it as the 'enjoyment enabler' of your iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G which can be used with headphones (just like normal), can be charged while gaming (just like normal), and has a 'cord management system' (kind of not normal). If that's not enough to convince you to reach for your wallet, the "lifetime guarantee" and ludicrously zany look of the thing will probably get you to bite... it's $49.99 and available for pre-order right now.

Version 0.1.0 - 30 Oct 2008 " You gotta start somewhere"
Initial release of FSO Control.
Beside being rough here are some points and notes:
* I'd like to launch this with a POWER button press but I can not
figure out how to set the DISPLAY environment when launching a
GUI with a rule in oevents. You can try though. Put a rule in
/etc/freesmartphone/oevents/rules.yaml like this:
trigger: InputEvent()
filters:
- HasAttr(switch, "POWER")
- HasAttr(event, "pressed")
actions: Command("fso-control")
* Depending on the version of frameworkd-conf the is a typo in
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/frameworkd.conf
<policy user="root">
<allow own="org.freesmartphone.ousaged"/>
- <allow send_path="/org/freesmartphone/usage"/>
+ <allow send_path="/org/freesmartphone/Usage"/>
<allow send_destination="org.freesmartphone.Usage"/>
<allow receive_sender="org.freesmartphone.Usage"/>
</policy>
* The "lock" button does nothing and will become a button to power
the various radios - gsm,gps,wifi,blutooth. Perhaps configure them
also?
* The more button does nothing. I don't know what it should do.

The web browser Opera has been rejected from the AppStore. Some may see this as unfortunate since on other mobile devices Opera Mini and Opera Mobile replace the typically shoddy mobile browser with a nice, stable, easy to use, and quick mobile browser. In this case I don't think it's a huge loss for Opera to be rejected since the built-in Safari browser is pretty excellent in the iPhone. On the other hand it would have been nice to see if Opera did any better with their iPhone browser. Oh well.
Unlike other AppStore rejections of apps that violate no rules like Podcaster (now on Cydia) it is no surprise that Opera was rejected. The iPhone SDK Agreement does not allow you to write your own Java Interpreter which Opera did with their iPhone browser.

You know how a band's first album is almost always their best? That's how I feel about the first iPod. Sure, it's got a muddy, colorless LCD screen, measly 5GB storage, mechanical scroll wheel, only works with Macs and is a complete brick compared to every other iPod. But it's so much more Zen and alive—from a time of zero feature bloat. It did one thing amazingly well, and changed everything. You can own an untouched brick of history for $500.
That's 25 percent more than it originally cost, which made people crazy then. There's no box or accessories, either. But walking down the street with this would earn you at least one approving nod a day, if you live for cool-kid approval.

Shipping delays have pushed the T-Mobile G1's Wally World debut back a few days to Nov. 3. (Maybe they were using the G1's GPS to get there?) Since only 550 of their 4,300 stores getting the G1 makes it kind of a crapshoot if you're driving around looking for one, Walmart's site should have a definitive list of Google-y locations in the next day or two. And hey, $148.88.

Electronic Arts has answered the call for more games on Google's Android mobile device platform – i.e. the T-Mobile G1 – with a version of Tetris now available for download from the EA Mobile site. The game is selling for $7.99. It will be followed next month by Bejeweled and Monopoly: Here & Now Edition.
In an official release, EA Mobile America and Asia publishing veep Adam Sussman calls Android an "exciting new platform" and says that the division has "more games in development" beyond the three revealed today. Looking at its catalog of iPhone / iPod Touch games, it's probably safe to expect some variation of Spore and Scrabble to be in the bunch.

So yesterday, Motorola comes out with some optimistic sounding news (well, unless you're getting the axe) of streamlining the operation and shifting focus to Android, an OS that is built specifically for its relative ease to bring to market. And then, one day later on their quarterly earnings call (in which they announced a staggering loss of $400 million in one quarter), new president Sanjay Jha says we won't see the first Android-powered Moto phone until Christmas of next year, notwithstanding any further delays? Yeah, I guess that's about right.

Square Enix, the famed Japanese publisher behind all 3,000 Final Fantasy games, is hard at work on Crystal Defenders, a new game for the iPhone based on the FF universe. It'll be a "defense simulation" game that utilizes the touchscreen, so I'm guessing it'll have more in common with Final Fantasy Tactics than Final Fantasy XII. It's due to hit the Japanese App Store in by the end of this year, with no word on an overseas release.

Japan does love 'em some mobile TV. Now that 1-Seg digital goodness has been announced for iPhone users. The 80-gram tuner provides a TV fix over WiFi and doubles as a battery extender when plugged into the iPhone 3G's dock connector. Trendy sidewalk zombies, the streets are yours. We'll update you with prices and dates when known. One more pic for size comparison after the break.
Update: Official PR with specs (no price) is now out: 3 hours continuous 1-Seg viewing, 2-/4-hours charge via AC/USB, and available mid December along side a free 1-Seg application from the AppStore.

OpenMoko, the company most famous for its altogether open Neo FreeRunner, is reportedly quite close to kicking out an Android-based handset. Before you get all shocked and appalled, let's look at this rationally. If you'll recall, we actually got wind of such an occurrence way back in April of this year, and some of those very details are jibing nicely with what we're hearing now. Apparently a company dubbed Koolu will be looking to OpenMoko for the design, and we could see a device emerge as early as next month. Initial specs for the elusive mobile include a 400MHz / 500MHz Samsung 2442B CPU, 128MB of SDRAM, a 2.84-inch 640 x 480 resolution touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, aGPS / GPS, inbuilt accelerometer, a pair of "hard" buttons, Bluetooth support, a 2.5mm headphone jack (boo!) and a microSD card slot. Obviously we'll have to wait and see if any of this pans out, but we'll be the first to cross our fingers and hope for yet another Android phone in the mix.

We thought we'd heard the last of this whole AT&T / Starbucks WiFi deal yesterday, but alas, we were terrifically mistaken. AT&T has come forth today with two fluffy press releases that flesh out the details, and amazingly, there are some inclusions that we weren't made aware of yesterday. For starters, all iPhone / iPhone 3G customers will now have free (and seemingly limitless) access to AT&T WiFi hotspots across the US -- we're talking Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, the whole lot. Additionally, the carrier has welcomed select BlackBerry users -- that's the Bold for now, the Pearl 8120 / 8820 "later this year" -- into the same deal, though the official verbiage mentions that an "unlimited data plan" is required. If you didn't make the cut this time, fret not -- AT&T has plans to invite "more mobile devices" into the fold here shortly.

Microsoft has just launched a new developer portal for Windows Mobile to help advertise upcoming events, showcase applications, and introduce you to a number of team members and MVPs. And, of course, there's no shortage of guides showing you how to turn that idea in your head into a working Windows Mobile application.

UIQ is dead! But not for CellPhoneSoft, one of the most active software houses that still supports UIQ and who has produced File Associate, which can assign different applications to open files. For example, it can associate .DOC files with Docs To Go instead of the built-in Quickword. And it has a generic viewer to view .ZIP, SWF and TXT files too!
File Associate lists and lets you change what applications are used to open various document files. You can select alternative viewers for all popular file types like DOC, PDF, JPG, MP3, etc. The newly assigned associations take effect when you open files from a file manager.
The accompanied Generic viewer application supports viewing flash, ZIP, text and binary files. When clicking on a file, you will never again encounter the "Unrecognized file format" message!
These two applications provide a kind of customization that was never before possible on Symbian UIQ or S60 phones.
Major features:
- Lists the file type associations on the phone.
- Changes what viewer application is started when opening a document file (available on SonyEricsson phones).
- Includes Generic viewer application for viewing ZIP, text and binary files.
- Supports viewing local flash files using the Opera Flash Plug-in.
