New user features:
Added a page under the opts menu which
shows some information about the sun and
moon, such as rising and setting times,
phases, etc.
Added more Deep Sky Objects, particularly
in the far south, where there are no
Messier objects.
Added a page under the opts menu
displaying a key to the symbols and
colors used by the program, as well as
the program version.
Improved the dynamic range of the symbols
used to display stars.
Improved the constellation stick figures
for Canis Major, Corona Australis and
Orion.
Bug Fixes:
Fixed a bug which occationally caused
azimuth values greater than 360 degrees
to be printed.
Fixed a bug which caused constellations
which stradle RA = 0 to not always display
the stars at the stick figure verticies
to be displayed if they were fainter than
the active magnitude limit. So far as
I can tell, this only effected Pisces.
Decreased the limiting magnitude limit
for checking whether or not stars are at
the verticies of constellation stick
figures. This prevents spurious
associations with very faint stars, and
also makes the code somewhat faster.

Mojo - java mail client
Right now the main task is to design the main UI. From my first sketches, there will be three rectangles/buttons in two lines, with main functions, such as send-settings-inbox, etc. In the second half of the screen, there will be a list with the latest mails (from, subject, date). I'm working on the anothers screen designs sheets, like the settings, etc.

The devs have posted up a video of their latest progress towards an iPhone 3g unlock. The video is of their PMB8878 baseband tool.
The baseband tool allows communication with the baseband via AT commands. The video shows an AT command that has been inserted into to the PMB8878 that starts and application on the basband.

Just released via the MMi Cydia source iLocalis the ultimate in iPhone tracking, remote control, and more.
What's that image above? That is from my account on the iLocalis website and it is where my iPhone was located 22 mins ago. With iLocalis you can set how often you want your iPhone 3g to send its current location to the iLocalis server and your iPhone will be tracked.

If Streetview coming in firmware 2.2 isn't enough for you and you need something Google-made to play with grab a copy of Google Earth from the AppStore. Google sure has been busy lately.
Google Earth is a nice little bit of technology allowing you to view the world via a combination of satellite and aerial images. This port by google to the iPhone has been done quite well and it's an entertaining little app.
Just search for a location or place on the Earth or click locate me and Google Earth takes you to the corresponding part of the world showing you pictures or 3d rendering of the area. Controls are pretty simple to use. Pinch and pull.

Both released tonight via the MMi Cydia repo LockDockBar and QuickUnlock provide some extra features and functionality to your iPhone's lockscreen.
LockDockBar
This utility puts your Phone, Mail, SMS, and Calendar apps on your lock screen above slide to unlock for quick and easy access. Just a quick install from Cydia and you can access all four of the applications mentioned above with a quick finger tap from the lockscreen. No slide to unlocked needed.
QuickUnlock
QuickUnlock provides more options for locking/unlocking your iPhone. If your phone is locked simply hit the home button three times to unlock temporarily. After you hit the home button three times you'll be able to browse around your home screen for 10 seconds.

Get ready, because the iPhone 3G unlock is coming to an iPhone 3G near you. The iPhone Dev Team have been able to break in the baseband processor. As you may remember from the first-generation iPhone unlock, this is big news because it means they have access to the core of the system, which gives them the ability to fully manipulate the iPhone 3G hardware and, therefore, unlock it. They gave us all the technical details and posted a demo of it in action

Earlier this evening firmware 2.2 Beta 2 was seeded to developers. In this firmware version Google Street View is enabled. Firmware 2.2 beta 1 included the APIs for Street View but the feature wasn't enabled.
Other things like push still haven't been confirmed but we expect to see push supported before the public release of 2.2. What are some features you want to see in 2.2?
Something else new that appears in 2.2 Beta 2 could be more options when getting directions via Google Maps. According to someone on iphoneyap bus and walking directions are now options in firmware 2.2 beta 2. It appears in the photos below that the bus directions even include bus schedule times.

A few weeks ago I covered PwnPlayer and iSoulSeek (now called MewSeek) and as of today both are out and available on Cydia. Let me tell you even though PwnPlayer is still in beta this public release version is dang good.
PwnPlayer is a great music player alternative for the iPhone already having a solid list of features in this public beta. Of course it has the basics allowing you to play your iTunes music database with coverflow and album art. The lock screen controls allow you to skip tracks and adjust volume without unlocking your phone (although I think these controls could use a bit of refinement). PwnPlayer also runs in the background allowing you to play your music and use your phone for other things.
Forget about the basics. What makes PwnPlayer a must have download are the extra...

GMail's Java-based client seemed to have been stuck at v1 for decades - it's just had the big 2.0 upgrade. It's still Java and larger (at 500K), but it's faster and, it's claimed, more reliable, especially when working for short periods offline. There's also now support for multiple GMail accounts and sending email in the background. To download version 2.0, go to m.google.com/mail in your phone browser.

A group of security researchers, including former NSA computer security expert Charles A. Miller, has discovered a security flaw in the G1's web browser. The flaw could allow a hacker to trick a G1 user into visiting a malicious website that could install some nasty bugs on the smartphone (or com). Google was made aware earlier this week, and is working to release a patch to fix the flaw, but Android's architecture inherently limits such a flaw's potential damage.

AT&T is circulating a survey among some of its longer-term iPhone users with a checklist of features they'd like to see. It's a follow-up to a similar survey a few months back, and apparently also serves to judge reactions to the 2.1 firmware. Some of the most regular complaints make the list, including picture messaging through MMS, landscape mode for email, a user-replaceable battery, and the all-mighty cut and paste. The survey probably doesn't imply any kind of imminent changes, but it's nice to hear that AT&T is trying to listen to what we've all been screaming for so long.

Look, Dan Hesse is an intelligent individual, which means he knew good and well that he'd start a flame war when making one particular comment to the National Press Club in Washington. The CEO of Sprint casually proclaimed that he didn't feel Android (in its current form) was "good enough to put the Sprint brand on." In all fairness, Sprint has shown a friendly side to Google in the past, and he did promise to sell an Android-powered phone "at some time in the future," but asserting that Sprint is in the position to shy away from what's arguably the most exciting thing to happen to the mobile realm since the advent of the iPhone is, um, questionable at best.

Over on the T-Mobile forums, there's a massive thread about the G1's totally borked POP3/IMAP email service. Looks like receiving, sending, and even just checking email results in a nasty connection error for just about everyone (one user estimates 95%). A T-Mobile representative posted in the thread, and while it looks like they're actively working on the problem, there doesn't seem to be a fix yet

So here's the deal. You don't get copy/paste. You don't get image or videos over MMS. And you still can't type your emails or text messages in landscape mode. BUT! If you've been dreaming about Google Street View, or, uh, walking directions... well, you're in luck, because Apple is listening to you and nobody else. One neat little tidbit, though: looks like the SDK is now supporting line-in audio devices, which could lead to some fun later on. Still, not a thrilling update.

Have problems with the iPhone? Who doesn't? Sure, it's an amazing piece of gadgetry, but countless bugs and glitches have plagued the Apple product from the beginning. Now networking company Fullsix has launched a site dedicated to gripers called “Please Fix the iPhone.” The site gets owners to vote on the most pressing issues plaguing their iPhones, in an attempt to get Jobs and friends to work on them faster. There's even a version of the site specifically made for the mobile's browser, so that you can complain about your iPhone on your iPhone.

If you don't wanna spring for the two-year contract or wait out the 90 days 'til T-Mobile will unlock the G1 for you, getting it going without actually activating it is remarkably easy. Just snag an active T-Mobile SIM card from a friend (or foe), pop it in to get through the setup process, and after enabling Wi-Fi, you can drop it like it's hot. 'Course, it won't make any phone calls, but that's not why you wanted a G1 anyway, right?

After promising they would axe the beyond-draconian NDA preventing developers from discussing the details of their own applications, Apple has followed through and released a revise that allows the devs to share, on Apple's new developer forums or elsewhere. It also clears the way for devs to open-source their apps without fear of legal action or banishment, should they so choose. Certainly a move in the right direction for Apple's baffling iPhone development strategies thus far.

When low-level Intel execs throw down a verbal assault on Silicon Valley-buds Apple, guess what the result is? Fake fight! Fortunately, Intel's Anand Chandrasekher just stepped in, referee-style, and dropped the retraction hammer on his loose-lipped, ARM-bashing underlings with the following correction:
"Intel's low-power Atom processor does not yet match the battery life characteristics of the ARM processor in a phone form factor; and, that while Intel does have plans on the books to get us to be competitive in the ultra low power domain - we are not there as yet. Secondly, Apple's iPhone offering is an extremely innovative product that enables new and exciting market opportunities. The statements made in Taiwan were inappropriate, and Intel representatives should not have been commenting on specific customer designs."
So... friends, or are we doomed to repeat the whole toasted bunny thing again?
