If you're anything like us, you've been waiting for Android to work its way onto basically every device you own, so this video of the plucky open source OS getting busy on an HTC Touch is an encouraging glimpse of the future. Work has actually been going on for a while now, but this is the best we've seen so far --it's all there, including a custom soft keyboard, and it looks like it runs pretty well, although we're told there are some issues with scaling the UI to QVGA and that GPS, Bluetooth and USB aren't operable yet. The hack is actually available, and you don't have to be too daring to try it out -- all it takes is a restart to go back to WinMo. Who's taking the plunge?

Okay G1 owners, so here's the end-all answer to your data roaming quandaries. For those not caught up, there has been quite the hubbub going around about the G1's inability to not suck down data whilst traveling aboard. Allegedly, the handset would continue to digest pricey bits and bytes overseas even after users had selected that data roaming be disabled. Now, T-Mobile has issued an official response (posted in full after the break) to clear things up, and the gist of it is this: for users with a bone stock G1, the "Off" selection in data roaming should work fine, but third-party applications can essentially override this command and wreak havoc on one's phone bill. From the horse's mouth: "Some third-party applications available for download on Android Market require access to the internet and have the ability to turn on data roaming when in use. Customers are informed whether an application will use this feature prior to downloading, but should also be aware when traveling outside the country."
Official T-Mobile statement:
T-Mobile is committed to delivering the best experience in wireless to our customers. We're excited to announce the availability of Google Maps for mobile version 2.3 with Street View on Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile. Street View was previously released on Google Maps for Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone. Street View lets you access street level imagery to help orient yourself when looking for places, businesses, or getting directions. Say you're going to meet with friends at an unfamiliar restaurant. Now you can search for it in Google Maps for mobile, click on "Street View", and see what the place and surrounding area look like. Similarly, say you need to get to a shop in a part of town you don't know. Find it using your phone, get directions to it, and see how to get there with full-screen panorama images of every step along the way

Although Apple has seen 10,000 applications and 300 million downloads in less than four months in its App Store, some are complaining that the lower priced apps are stifling innovation and inhibiting developers.
Craig Hockenberry, a seasoned developer who created the Frenzic and Twitterrific apps describes this problem well in his open letter to Steve Jobs.
The main problem is the enormous amount of 99-cent apps or less (see graph), what Hockenberry calls “ringtone apps,” where developers reduce their prices as low as possible so they’ll get favorable placement in iTunes. Hockenberry describes this, “We have a lot of great ideas for iPhone applications. Unfortunately, we’re not working on the cooler (and more complex) ideas. Instead, we’re working on 99¢ titles that have a limited lifespan and broad appeal. Market conditions make ringtone apps most appealing.”

Earlier this month a tipster claimed that he received a huge roaming bill from T-Mobile despite taking precautions. Now, T-Mobile has offered an official response—some of the apps can turn on data roaming by themselves.

So there you have it. Apparently, if you want to travel abroad, it is imperative that you delete any applications with this issue. It may also be one reason why the battery life is so poor.

According to two reports, Sony Ericsson and HTC are both semi-confirming Android handsets for 2009. An SE spokesman by the name of Garfield Brusewitz was quoted as saying that the company would introduce higher-end models of the Google-powered devices to start with, then supplement those handsets with cheaper versions aimed at a broader market. In another article, HTC says that it will launch one "or more" Android phones in the new year, aiming to have them on shelves by Summer.
This hardly comes as a surprise from either of these companies, as HTC has been on-board since day one of the OHA and, you know, already has an Android handset out, and Sony Ericsson's announcement of participation was naturally going to lead to some actual hardware. Now it's just a matter of getting these out the door, and... sneak peaks at CES, anyone?

While there are plenty of apps to help you kill time on your iPhone/iPod touch, there hasn't been a killer app to launch the system as a powerful gaming platform. SimCity may change that.
So far, developer EA has, no pun intended, phoned it in a bit with their iPhone apps. Neither Spore nor Tetris have been anything all that noteworthy, not quite living up to the iPhone's Dreamcast-level hardware. But after Kotaku spent some time with EA's latest big project, SimCity, they had nothing but great things to say about it.
Whatever you do, though, don't go thinking this is SimCity Lite. This mobile version is fully featured, with pre-built cities, accountant recommendations, water pipes, natural disasters, etc. The works.
[Pinching] in as close as you can on the 2D sprites reveals intricate details, such a smoke emitting from towers, or shading alongside the buildings. Overall, a really nice graphical presentation that compares similarly to SimCity 3000.

Interestingly enough, a retro rotary phone lends itself well to iPhone docking. Plus, building one yourself looks to be a fairly simple procedure (so long as you are willing to cannibalize a speaker dock).
According to the project page, a version with a microphone on the handset is also in the works along with a compatible iPhone app. That would make it possible to use it for actual phone calls—kind of like the commercial retro handsets that have become so ubiquitous these days.

The Open Handset Alliance just made a major score with 14 more members: AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, ASUSTek Computer Inc. (previously rumored), Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba Corporation and Vodafone. That's not quite everyone that matters, but pretty darn close. Were we to climb not-very-far onto the limb of conjecture, we might posit that Garmin might be looking at Andoid for its much-delayed nuviföne, or some sort of followup, while the emergence of an ASUS "Eee Phone" or a XPERIA X1 running Android (Sony Ericsson may very well be the biggest win here, consumer-wise) would be welcome moves from those manufacturers. We'd say at this point the holdouts are starting to stick out more than the actually OHA members, which spells good things for the industry no matter what specific hardware is the fruit of this relationship... but seriously guys, build us some more Android phones.

There is nearly no doubt that the iPhone is coming our for sale at Walmart before the end of the month. Bloomberg has all but confirmed the rumor with a couple Walmart store representatives and five cell-hone department employees in Walmart stores across California.
On the other hand it is appearing more obvious that the $99 4 gb iPhone is no more than a rumor. First of all bloomberg confirmed that Walmart will be offering two models of iPhone. Those two models will most likely be the 8 gb and 16 gb versions that are currently out on the market at normal prices.

There are rumors circulating that Apple is about to start and end of the year sales push that will finally allow unprotected iTunes music from all major labels.
A French technology site ElectronLibre says that it's now "clear" Apple will bring new life to its music store by removing DRM from tracks published by Sony, Universal and Warner on December 9th. ElectronLibre does not have a long track record but did accurately leak the launch of French iTunes TV shows.
This rumor comes after several others that said Apple was negotiating DRM free terms with the major labels.

Bug Fixes:
Fixed a bug which occasionally caused
the screen to display all objects
collapsed into a small area at the upper
left of the screen after unzooming.
Slightly improved the accuracy of sunrise
and sunset times. I was off by
10 arc minutes in the position of the
sun's limb, corrected for refraction.
This could produce an error in the
sunrise/sunset time of about
1 minute in the worst case.
