App Annie has released its 2019 State of Mobile report, including insights on how mobile gaming did worldwide in 2018 and predictions for the coming year. Predictably, battle royale drove much of the industry's success last year, and mobile gaming as a whole continued to see strong growth compared to other sectors of the gaming industry.
Globally, all apps (including non-gaming apps) saw 194 billion worldwide downloads in 2018 and $101 billion in total consumer spending. Of that, gaming was responsible for 78% of consumer spending across mobile storefronts, and was also the fastest-growing sector of the gaming market in 2018. China, the United States, and Japan accounted for 75% of all mobile gaming spending last year.
App Annie predicts that mobile gaming will reach 60% of the market share for consumer gaming spending in 2019, driven by growth both in hardcore titles (as hardware improves) and hypercasual titles.

In lieu of Master Chief's continued absence, Microsoft is working on a trio of Gears of War titles -- with two due by the end of the year.
Naturally, fans are most excited about Gears 5 (so famous have the series' Lancer-wielding antics become that Xbox has apparently dropped the "of War"), with strategy enthusiasts intrigued by the prospect of the PC-exclusive Xcom-like Gears Tactics. The third is much more unusual.
Gears Pop is the franchise's first mobile outing and, as the logo and title imply, is modeled on the hugely popular Funko Pop figurines. Little has been revealed about the title since its E3 unveiling, though it's a safe bet that this is a free-to-play outing designed as both fan service for die-hard followers and a potential entry point for mobile gamers -- an audience many times larger than that of Xbox.
One thing that has come to light is the developer: Mediatonic.
This London-based studio is already known for Square Enix RPG Heavenstrike Rivals, the international remake of pigeon-dating oddity Hatoful Boyfriend, and Fantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding World, a hidden-object game based on the works of JK Rowling.

The mobile gaming industry saw continued strength in 2018 in the US and Canada. 60% of Americans and Canadians play mobile games, and their spending brought the industry $9.37 billion in revenue last year.
EEDAR, in collaboration with Sensor Tower, has published the full version of the Deconstructing Mobile and Tablet Gaming 2019 report, offering further insight beyond the highlights shared earlier this week. The data comes from a survey of 5,000 active US and Canadian mobile gamers ages two and up, who qualified if they had access to a mobile gaming device and had played a game on it within 30 days of the survey.
As previously-reported, EEDAR reports that of a total of 283.1 million mobile users in the US and Canada, 210.9 million play mobile games, a number that's a 5% year-over-year increase.
A gender breakdown shows that 51% of mobile gamers in 2018 were female, and 49% were male. By age breakdown, children 2-12 make up 20% of mobile gamers, play an average of five hours per week, and spend an average of $17 per year. Children are most likely to play kid-friendly games on tablets over smartphones, and learn about new titles from friends and family who are also playing games.
Teens and young adults ages 13-18 make up 24% of mobile gamers, playing for an average of five hours per week and spending an average of $18 per year. Unlike younger gamers, they are more likely to play on smartphones than tablets and enjoy a wider range of genres. YouTube is a key way they discover new games.

So far, Rapper 2 Milly, Scrubs' Donald Faison, actor Alfonso Ribeiro, and Instagram personality Backpack Kid have all sued or joined existing suits against Epic Games for including their dance moves in Fortnite. Now, another lawsuit has surfaced from the mother of "Orange Shirt Kid" and his dance routine, referred to in Fortnite as "Orange Justice."
This suit is a bit different from the others we've seen so far. In this case, a dance called "The Random" was submitted directly to Fortnite by a child known online only as "Orange Shirt Kid" for the game's Boogie Down contest, but the dance didn't win. However, it did go viral.
In a Change.org petition entitled "Make orange shirt kid winner of the boogie down contest," 14,428 people signed to ask Epic to crown the child the winner. Though he did not end up winning, Epic did add the dance "Orange Justice" to the game, which was the same dance as "The Random" and included a reference in its description to a remark Orange Shirt Kid made at the end of the video, saying, "It's also a great exercise move."
The child's mother, Rachel McCumbers, doesn't mention the contest in the lawsuit as reported by Variety. The suit does mention the video's popularity and the campaign to get the dance included, and says that following the video's explosion, Orange Shirt Kid suffered from cyberbullying and was forced to close various social media accounts.

In the excitement of the launch of the Epic Games store, a tidbit that seems to have been overlooked by many is Tim Sweeney's assertion that the store will also make an appearance on Android this year.
In an interview with Game Informer in December of last year, the company's founder mentioned Epic's mobile ambitions alongside a lack of interest in console support.
"The Epic Games store is launching on PC and Mac in 2018, and Android later in 2019," he said. "We'd like to launch on iOS in 2019, however, that is in apparent conflict with current Apple policy. We believe all general purpose computing devices, such as PCs, smartphones, and tablets, should be open to competition between stores.
"Consoles are a different market, with dedicated game machines whose hardware costs are often partly subsidized by software revenue. Epic doesn't seek to operate a storefront on console platforms, but as an engine maker we do everything we can to enable cross-platform interoperability."

In a lead that will surely one day no longer be true: Fortnite is still doing great, thanks for asking. Epic Games' ever-popular battle royale saw its best month yet on iOS last December, according to estimates by Sensor Tower.
Sensor Tower sees Fortnite on iOS return from a November drop, a month-over-month increase in revenue of 83% to nearly $69 million in December 2018. This was also up 16% from July, Fortnite on iOS' previous best month yet at $59.3 million.
Total in 2018, Fortnite grossed over $455 million on the App Store from its launch in March. Its battle royale rival, PUBG Mobile, brought in almost $100 million on iOS from its launch in April, 22% of Fortnite's total.
Fortnite is also seeing solid continued new downloads, up 59% month-over-month to over 5.2 million new installs. That brings the game to an estimated 82.6 million total installs on iOS.

We’re not alone in the universe…
Ranging between 100 billion and 200 billion galaxies out there; the universe is surely the biggest and most crowded inhabited place ever created.
In there you can find a hugely vast number of different species who live more or less peacefully among the stars; there are friendly and cute ones like E.T. or Alf, some with a very unique artistic sense like Ziggy Stardust, and others who continuously try to conquer the Earth like Thanos, the Daleks or the Visitors.
But there is even specific kind of aliens which main focus is Japan. If you are a fan of Japanese pop-culture names like Alien Baltan, Bemstar, Gan Q, and Zetton will surely sound familiar to you. Coming from different planets, and provided with peculiar super-powers, all of them have one aspect in common. Their enemy, the only being who has the ability to send them back into the outer space…Ultraman!
Created by Eiji Tsuburaya, and originally aired on Tokyo Broadcasting System from July 17, 1966, to April 9, 1967; Ultraman: A Special-Effects Fantasy Series (ウルトラマン 空想特撮シリーズ) is still today one of the most iconic characters renowned worldwide. Since its first broadcast; Ultraman becomes a huge pop-phenomenon which gave birth to dozens of sequels, spin-offs, homages, parodies, and remakes.
Appearing in video games, manga series, ads, cup noodles, and thousands of other different products; this being made of light is a real super-hero who during his long successful career teamed up with other characters such as Kamen Rider and MS Gundam! But what makes this franchise so popular? Well, an important reason for its success is due to the enemies.
In fact, Ultraman contains some of the weirdest creatures ever appeared on any other series. For example you’ll not find anything like the fishy Alien Baltan who shoots laser rays from the claws, the walking spaceship King Joe who can separate its body into four smaller ships at will, or the biomechanical Dino-Tank who is made by 50% part dinosaur & 50% part tank to bring 100% of destruction on our planet.
For the first time, this unique cast of monsters can be controlled by you with Ultra Kaiju Battle Breeder for iOS and Android!
This breeding battle strategy simulation game will give you the opportunity to conquer the blue planet generating your personal army of invaders, and battle against the Ultra Crusaders to break down the only obstacle between you and the supreme domination!
With the full power of billions of planets on hand; with Ultra Kaiju Battle Breeder for iOS and Android you can rise up through the breeder ranks and bring glory to your army while you strive to become the top alien breeder of the planet. Battle, win, and level-up; this is the path that will lead you to the victory. Unlock secret powers to thwart the defensive plans of the Nebula M78’s Ultras and prove to the whole universe your awesome strength, amazing courage, and effective strategic skill!
Guide the horde throughout the Land of the Rising Sun; witness how science fiction becomes real making the impossible possible. Play with Ultra Kaiju Battle Breeder for iOS and Android, and the screen of your smartphone will explode due to an insane dose of non-stop strategy-action.
This game will let you feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over you!

Five million people have downloaded Old School RuneScape on iOS and Android, Jagex has announced.
It bodes well for the launch of the main RuneScape MMO on smartphones, which is currently in the testing phase.
Old-School RuneScape was launched in 2013 and was a re-release of the 2007 version of the game. It has since received minor engine improvements and tweaks, and is targeted at older fans of the MMO who prefer the original experience over the more modern iteration.
The 18 year-old MMO also reported its highest ever paid membership total over Christmas, beating a record set in 2008.
"2018 was a fantastic year for our RuneScape games, which have truly come of age," said Jagex boss Phil Mansell.

Apple’s no stranger to shipping out devices that tend to bend, such as iPhone 6, but now, it’s set a new record and shipping devices that are bent out of the box!
[h=3]A little back story on the iPad Pro 2018[/h]Spec-wise, the iPad Pro 2018 is pretty impressive as it scores almost 18k in the GeekBench 4 CPU test but it has its own problems…
A little over a month ago, Apple released their new iPad Pro models that killed the home button, thinned the bezels and gave the device a more industrialist design along with the mandatory processor update. While this is all good news, Apple also decided to hike the price of the entry level iPad Pro to $799 (which translates to a ridiculous €900+ for those of us in Europe) for the entry-level 64GB model while still selling the 2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro for the same price it sold for initially ($649 for the base model).

Apple seems to be working on a feature that will give mobile developers the ability to add gifting options for their in-app purchases.
Spotted by MacRumours, a change in wording for the App Store Review Guidelines makes reference to this new option, although there currently appear to be no details on how this will be handled.
Prior to the review, section 3.1.1 of the guidelines stated that: "Apps should not directly or indirectly enable gifting of in-app purchase content, features, or consumable items to others."

Military strategy title Afghanistan '11 has been pulled from the iOS App Store due to its inclusion of the Taliban as an enemy faction.
This violates Apple's long-standing policy that such titles should not feature "people from a specific government or other real entity as the enemies" -- a ruling that has affected a handful of other titles over the years.
The game's removal was revealed on Twitter by Iain McNeil, development director at the game's creator Slitherine, and spotted by Kotaku. McNeil lamented the move, adding "... and people wonder why we don't do iOS anymore."
Responding to queries via Twitter, McNeil said the company has lodged a complaint with Apple -- as have some of the games fans -- and said the team "hope Apple change their minds and let the game back in the store."
However, given the Apple has been pulling similar titles under this ruling for close to a decade now, this remains unlikely. The mobile platform holder has previously removed Pacific Strike for featuring Japanese flags, and a US Civil War game Ultimate General: Gettysburg for featuring Confederate flags.

Epic Games has pulled the Infinity Blade series from the App Store, while teasing fans that the games could reappear "in places you wouldn't expect."
The first Infinity Blade was a milestone for gaming on iOS devices back in 2010. It had a level of polish and technical execution not yet seen on the iPhone, and earned $1.6 million from premium downloads in less than a week.
Two more games followed, both exclusive to iOS devices, but Epic has now pulled all three from the App Store and disabled in-app purchases, starting yesterday.
In a statement, the publisher said that current owners will be able to continue playing and downloading them through their accounts "for the foreseeable future."
Epic's official line is that supporting all three games has become "increasingly difficult" as internal studio Chair Entertainment pushes forward with the development of SpyJinx.
"The Infinity Blade series will always hold a special place for me personally and for Epic as a whole," said Donald Mustard, Epic's global creative director, who founded Chair Entertainment before it was acquired in 2008.

The worldwide phenomenon that is Fortnite continues to grow, with the number of registered users now at over 200 million.
The figure was first reported by Bloomberg, and confirmed by Epic to GamesIndustry.biz. It was first included in marketing material for the game's launch in Korea, which features video promotions with Hollywood star Chris Pratt.
In addition to being just short of the Brazilian population, the 200 million milestone also shows 60% growth since Epic last declared its user numbers in June -- then reported at 125 million.
