Seeing a hematologist is a luxury that few people can afford in the poorest parts of Africa. That's why a team at UC Berkeley has adapted its iPhone microscope project to identify blood parasites in under three minutes. CellScope Loa is, essentially, a 3D-printed box that a smartphone can sit on top of, taking five-second videos of blood samples. The companion app then looks for signs of movement from the microscopic worms that, when left untreated, cause river blindness and elephantiasis.

Ever since Google launched the Nexus 10, I've craved a decent full-size Android tablet. Sony's Xperia slates are nice enough, but I've always missed the purified software experience that comes with Nexus devices. When the Nexus 9 was announced, I thought a worthy upgrade had arrived, but it quickly became clear that the hardware wasn't up to HTC's usual standards. The plastic back creaked and the display suffered from light leaks, while the price, which originally started at $399/ÂŁ319, felt a little on the high side.

Sony's Android smartphones haven't been tinkerer-friendly to date -- since you couldn't boot from a recovery partition, you couldn't install CyanogenMod and other unofficial operating systems without jumping through hoops. It should be much easier to mess with your software from now on, though. Sony is quietly releasingbootloaders that let you boot from that recovery space, which opens the door to installing both custom Android ROMs as well as very different platforms, like Firefox OS or Ubuntu Touch. The catch? Right now, the only devices that support these bootloaders are lower-end models you probably don't use, like the Xperia E3, M2, T2 Ultra and T3. You won't be modifying the heck out of your Xperia Z3 just yet, then, but that's no longer a far-fetched idea.

If you've used ad-sponsored Android apps, you've probably wondered where those ads are coming from, and whether or not there's anything to be worried about. According to French researchers, you have a reason to be cautious. They've found a way to automatically scan Android apps for connections to advertising and user tracking sites, and some of those programs are more than a little dodgy. A selection of 2,000 free Google Play apps connected to a whopping 250,000 sites spread over 2,000 domains. Most of them talk to only a handful of sites (Google's ad services dominate the top 10), but 10 percent connect to 500 or more -- one egregious offender links to over 2,000 sites. Only 30 percent of the apps talked to user tracking sites, but some of those were communicating with 800 or more addresses.

Long before it officially existed, there were rumors that the Apple Watch haddisappointing battery life. It wasn't long afterward that we started to hear companies were preparing to build external power packs to compensate. Thankfully, the folks over at Reserve Strap have discovered that you don't have to sacrifice style in favor of usefulness, thanks to the six-pin "diagnostic" port found on the bottom of the watch case. It turns out that the feature doesn't just transmit data, but can receive power at far faster rates than the magnetic inductive charging panel on the underside.

One of the biggest gripes among Windows phone devotees is a lack of high-powered devices as of late. How are you supposed to be a hardcore fan when most of the lineup is downright basic? At last, though, Microsoft appears to be catering to that need for speed. Both Unleash the Phones and The Verge understand that the Redmond crew is working on two range-topping Windows 10 phones, nicknamed Cityman and Talkman in a nod to Nokia's early handsets. They'd both be powerhouses with Quad HD screens, 3GB of RAM, 20-megapixel rear cameras, 5-megapixel front shooters and 32GB of expandable storage. It'd really boil down to your preference of screen size. The Talkman would be the mid-size model with a 5.2-inch display and a six-core processor (likely the LG G4's Snapdragon 808), while the Cityman would up the ante with a 5.7-inch screen and an eight-core (possibly Snapdragon 810) chip.

After the Internet was awash with reports that tattoos can negatively affect the Apple Watch's heart rate sensor, Apple has confirmed the issue on its website. In a page dedicated to explaining how the Watch captures your vitals, the company notes: "Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can also impact heart rate sensor performance," adding that "the ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings."

The partnership between tech giants Apple and IBM, which began last year, isn't just about working together on enterprise products. In Japan, the two companies justannounced an initiative that will deliver up to 5 million iPads to Japanese senior citizens, at no cost. Apple, IBM and the Japan Post Group, a local corporation that's also involved with the project, say the goal is to "improve the quality of life" for millions of elderly people in the Land of the Rising Sun. How so? Well, the iPads are said to feature custom-built apps by IBM, all designed with senior citizens in mind -- some can be used to set reminders and alerts about medications, or to request help with things like grocery shopping.

Wondering why your Apple Watch won't ship for weeks, even though you ordered as soon as humanly possible? The Wall Street Journal might know why. Its sources claimthat some Taptic Engines (the haptic feedback unit that vibrates your wrist) broke down in early testing, prompting Cupertino to switch suppliers and create a massive-but-necessary logistical headache. From all indications, Apple is pushing many orders to June simply because it expects to get up to speed by then. That won't be much consolation if you're staring at a bare arm for the next month or more, but you'll at least know why you're missing out.

Hangouts may be Android's star messaging app at the moment, but Google is still willing to show its original Messenger client a little TLC. The company has updated its basic Android texting app with support for quick replies from notifications. While the feature isn't quite as slick as what you get in iOS' Messages (where the notification itself has a reply box), it'll save you from constantly switching apps when you're juggling a rapid-fire conversation alongside your usual phone tasks. Grab the upgrade today if you want some of Google's latest bells and whistles without having to use Hangouts as your SMS software of choice.

The company behind micro-console Ouya is up for sale, according to a report citing a confidential email from CEO Julie Uhrman.
Fortune sources claim to have obtained an internal company email where Uhrman states that investment bank Mesa Global has been brought on to manage the sale, with the firm's current focus to “recover as much investor capital as possible.”
Ouya has yet to comment on the report at time of publication.
The Android powered micro-console launched at retail in June 2013, following a massively successful Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $8.5m as well as a venture capital funding round that brought in an additional $15m.
Last year, Ouya announced plans to bring its digital platform of games to hardware outside of its own. The company later backed up that statement, partnering with Xiaomi to add Ouya features to the Chinese firm's set-top boxes as well as receiving a $10m investment from Alibaba to bring the gaming platform to its set-top hardware.

Indie developer Jeff Vogel will no longer make games for iOS, criticising Apple for its apathy with regards to the problems the firm causes for developers.
Vogel recently released a brand new role-playing game Avernum 2 for iOS but pulled it just a few days later, now claiming he will no longer develop for the platform.
“Programming for Apple devices has, for the 20 years I’ve been doing it, been a continuous hassle,” he toldVentureBeat. “Apple constantly makes the old code obsolete, forcing programmers to relearn and revise everything constantly. Sometimes, these changes lead to better devices and software. Other times, it’s just obnoxiousness with no gain for developers or users.
“Apple doesn’t care. I suspect that Apple would be ecstatic if 90 per cent of game developers disappear overnight.”

The Apple Watch is handy for a lot of things, and now you can use the wearable when you tune your axe. Thanks to the folks at IK Multimedia, when you employ the company's UltraTuner app for iOS, note info is beamed to your wrist while tuning that stringed instrument. The software's Stage mode offers a full-screen interface for maximum visibility, and when this setting is selected, a smaller version of the chromatic tuner is displayed on the wearable. IK Multimedia claims that UltraTuner is ten times more accurate than mechanical strobe options -- down to +/- 1/100th of a cent. As you might expect, those figures make it the most accurate tuner available for iOS. If you've already splurged for the $5 app, you'll need to update to the most recent version to pair it with the Apple Watch.

Microsoft just demoed its 2-in-1 Continuum feature on a Windows 10 phone giving the mobile device the ability to become a really tiny desktop computer. Continuum adjusts the UI of Windows 10 on a device from desktop to tablet mode based on what's plugged into it. If you plug a keyboard and mouse into a tablet or phone, it goes into desktop mode. When those are unplugged, a pop-up asks if you want to enter tablet mode with touch input. Desktop mode includes the Start Menu and Taskbar you usually associate with a full size computer. For anyone that travels that would like to pare down the devices they pack, this is great. Corporate Vice President of the Operating Systems Group, Joe Belfiore did note that phones would need a hardware upgrade to fully implement the feature.

Despite Apple's notorious love for secrecy, it famously lost a prototype device in the past (maybe even two), when one of its employees left it in a bar. Now, the company might have lost another: a 20-year-old man reported that a couple robbed his Cupertino home and took an iPad "test model" with them, along with $7,500, prescription drugs and more electronics. It's unclear at this point what exactly "test model" means, and if it's a prototype for an upcoming version or one for an earlier iteration. Either way, it hasn't been returned yet, even though the couple is already in custody.

After getting an AndroidTV device (ADT-1), I have been improving VGBAnext for AndroidTV and other gamepad-only Android devices. The newest VGBAnext 1.3.1 adds many optimizations that will make your big-screen gameplay not only usable, but actually enjoyable.
First of all, I have added the overscan padding, required to make application fit your TV screen. I have also changed the application banner so that it looks sharper and more similar to built-in app banners.
On the gamepad front, you should now be able to exit emulation with the BACK key and open the menu with the MODE key. If your gamepad has no MODE or MENU keys, just press A+BACK for the menu. Furthermore, if your gamepad has no SELECT or START keys, X and Y will do their job now.
The key mapping dialog ("Settings | Input | Assign Keys") has also been changed. Pressing the same key twice unmaps it, pressing it three times confirms the dialog. You can still cancel the dialog with the BACK key at any time.
As this release contains some major UI changes, I would especially like to know of any problems you are having with it. Please, either email me or post to the EMUL8 discussion forum.
•Optimized app for AndroidTV, tested on the ADT-1 box.
•Added overscan border on AndroidTV devices.
•Added hints to the emulator and key mapping dialog.
•Fixed crashes on devices with no web browser (e.g. ADT-1).
•Replaced AndroidTV banner image.
•Enabled gamepad-only emulation interface.
•Press BACK on gamepad to exit emulation.
•Press MODE or BUTTON_A+BACK to open menu.
•Press BUTTON_X if you have no SELECT button.
•Press BUTTON_Y if you have no START button.
•Xperia CIRCLE button now acts as BUTTON_B.
•Redesigned key mapping dialog.
•Press same key twice to remove it from assignments.
•Press same key three times to confirm key mappings.
•DPAD_CENTER key no longer confirms key mappings.
