Tesco will launch a second Hudl tablet device later this year, after the original passed the 500,000 unit sales mark.
The supermarket revealed its plans today in its 'preliminary results 2013/14' financial report, which shows that group trading profits fell six per cent year-on-year to £3.3 billion during the year ending February 22nd 2014.
Hudl launched in September 2013 and went on to sell 300,000 units by the start of December, and some 400,000 by January 2014.
"This [financial] year we launched the Hudl, our very own tablet," said Tesco in a statement. "It was recently named winner of the ‘ReThink Retail Technology Initiative of the Year’ and we plan to launch a second device later this year.
"In the year we sold more than 500,000 Hudls, our first tablet.
"Blinkbox services also continue to grow and we launched Blinkbox books last month with hundreds of thousands of books now available to download."
Although Tesco has its own tablet and still stocks some consumer electronics in certain stores, itwithdrew from computing last year.
Philip Clarke, Tesco Chief Executive, said: "We are transforming Tesco through a relentless focus on providing the most compelling offer for our customers. Our results today reflect the challenges we face in a trading environment which is changing more rapidly than ever before. We are determined to lead the industry in this period of change.
"During the year, we have maintained our focus on cash and capital discipline. We have significantly reduced our new investment in Europe, focusing the majority of our overseas capital on targeted, high-returning investments in Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. We have completed our exit from the US and established partnerships with CRE in China and Tata in India which provide continued access to two of the world’s most exciting markets, consistent with a sustainable level of future investment.”
