Tablet shipments have continued to fall during Q2 2015, declining by 11 per cent year-on-year, so says analyst Canalys.
After three years of growth, the tablet market peaked in Q3 2014, but shipments have dipped to 42.5 million units year-on-year, with tablets falling in every worldwide region in Q2 2015.
Apple is leading the tablet market according to Canalys, with the firm taking the top spot in four key countries.
Tim Coulling, senior analyst at Canalys, said: “In the consumer space, demand for premium tablets in established markets has noticeably slowed but is not going to disappear. The top five countries accounted for half the world’s tablet shipments and Apple led in all but one, Brazil. It is well placed to continue leading the market for the time being.”
Sales in high-growth markets are also dropping as large-screen smartphones are growing in popularity.
In addition, Canalys believes tablets will have to compete against more two-in-one devices, which have been designed to take advantage of Windows 10.
Coulling added: “Despite the sudden downturn in shipments, tablets are certainly here to stay. Yes, they have matured and commoditised quickly, but there are still opportunities for vendors to profit from the category.
“Unlike consumers, businesses have been slow when it comes to mass adoption of tablets. They are willing to spend more on products that satisfy a specific need and meet key requirements, around durability for example."
Analyst IDC also previously revealed that the tablet market has declined by seven per cent year-on-year during Q2 2015,
This news comes after Canalys revealed that Lenovo has overtaken Apple in the PC market, with a 15 per cent market share.
