The long-running god-sim series The Settlers has come to iPhone, with a rather sudden release only a few days after the game was announced. Concerned with the minute details of bread making and ironmongery as much as with the larger issues of economy, combat and land ownership, The Settlers' outing on the Apple device takes players to a picturesque, gentle world that has always played host to this cult series.
Priced at £2.99 and available as of today, The Settlers allows users to gather resources, build stocks and go to battle, and with three nations to govern and defeat, it offers a surprisingly sizable and intricate challenge in the same vein as Sim City and Populous.
Developed by German studio Blue Byte, which has handled the Settlers series since its inception in 1994, the title recently enjoyed release on the DS and mobile to a rather underwhelmed response. However, in CasualGaming.biz's brief experience of the iPhone game, it has been significantly improved for the popular gadget.
As revealed by Pocket Gamer, the game was only confirmed to be on the way on October 5th, but already publisher Gameloft has made the title available.
Surprisingly simple despite some genuine depth, like its forerunners The Settlers on iPhone is brimming with character and bustles with activity, and stands out as an ambitious and potentially popular game on a system somewhat lacking in god games despite its touch screen interface.
