Sega has removed many of its mobile games from the iOS App Store, Google Play, the Samsung App Store, and the Amazon App Store (thanks Pocket Gamer) in the past week. The reason for this was announced on May 8th, when Sega said the following: “It is important for us to ensure that all of our fans, regardless of platform or operating system, have a great playing experience and after evaluating our complete list of titles, we have determined that a number of them no longer meet our standards.” This is presumably part of Sega’s new move to focus on mobile games over console, which will involve about 20 new titles with “console quality” being added to the company’s mobile game catalog. As a result of this, it was said, a number of games from mobile stores would be removed in the following weeks. What Sega didn’t do was mention which games it would be removing. As it stands, we now know what many of those games are as they are no longer available. There could be more to come, too.So far, the games that have been been pulled include:
- After Burner Climax
- Jet Set Radio
- Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2
- Super Monkey Ball Tip’n’Tilt 1 &2
- Altered Beast
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Golden Axe 1, 2 & 3
- Phantasy Star II
- Streets of Rage 1 & 3
- Space Harrier II
- Virtua Fighter 2
Sega added that if you already purchased one of these games then you should still be able to download it regardless of it being pulled from sale. However, the company also said that, as the game will no longer be supported, it only be available for you to play up until the point that it “becomes incompatible with the latest phone operating systems or hardware.”The good-ish news is that Sega also said that “given the right situation, these titles may return in an updated form.” But there’s no guarantees of that.
