Samsung has unveiled its latest wearable device, the Gear S, which comes with 3G connectivity.
The smartwatch can perform a number of tasks without the need to be connected up to a smartphone, including receiving notifications from social networks, receiving and replying to messages, and most notably, making and receiving phone calls.
As well as 3G, the Gear S has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Users can switch between different connections and have their information automatically synchronised with their smartphone.
It also features a two-inch curved Super AMOLED display at a 360x480 resolution and runs on the Tizen operating system.
“Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation,” said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics. “The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime.”
Health and fitness is also a focus for the Gear S. It comes with built-in GPS and S Health features such as Nike+ Running.
The Samsung Gear S smartwatch will be available from October. There is no word on pricing as of yet.
