Developers will be able to further monetise their apps and reach even more of the smartphone market.
Along with five new handsets unveiled including the Nokia X, X+, XL plus the Nokia 220 and Asha 230, Nokia has also announced that it will open up its new Nokia X platform to Android developers.
The new software platform is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), meaning that Android developers will be able to tap into this part of the market – increasing their audience reach and app revenue, by seamlessly introducing their apps over to the Nokia X platform.
Bryan Biniak, VP and GM of developer experience at Nokia, said: “Today Windows Phone is the fastest growing mobile ecosystem in the world, and we continue to see incredible momentum with our Lumia smartphones.
Giving developers access to Nokia’s operator billing network capabilities will enable them to further monetise their apps, as it offers them a global reach."
Many Android apps can be put on the Nokia Store as they are, with minimal modifications needed, due to the Nokia X analyser tool which reduces porting time by identifying required changes.
To make things even easier for developers, they will be able to use one code base and distribute a single APK (application package file) targeting multiple stores.
“Amit Patel, VP of developer relations at Nokia, commented: “The reach of Nokia's operator billing network provides developers with a powerful revenue driver – up to five times that of credit-card billing offered within other platforms.
“Combined with Nokia in-app Payment, developers have the freedom to build on the model that works best for them.”
Leading apps that will be available on the Nokia X platform include Facebook, LINE free voice and messages, Plants vs Zombies 2, Real Football 2014, Skype, Spotify, Twitter, Viber and Vine to name a few.
