Mozilla has unveiled a host of new devices and partnerships at Mobile World Congress 2014, as well as its plans for a ‘new category of smartphone’.
ZTE and Alcatel OneTouch have both unveiled new Firefox OS-powered smartphones, with ZTE introducing its Open C and Open II devices, while Alcatel OneTouch as demonstrated its Fire C, Fire E and Fire S smartphones, as well as its Fire 7 tablet.
Telefonica is set to launch Firefox OS devices in eight markets this year, while Deutsche Telekom plans to add four in south and eastern Europe.
Mozilla also unveiled that it will work with Spreadtrum on the industry’s first chipset for $25 smartphones, which aims to 'redefine the entry level for smartphones' in key growth markets.
“We are enabling a whole new category of smartphone, priced around $25, that will bring even more people around the world online,” said Jay Sullivan, COO of Mozilla, in a statement.
