Whilst a release remains way off, circulating reports indicate that Apple's newest iPhone device is already in use, running a future version of its iOS software.
App developers have noticed multiple references to an "iPhone6,1" within their logs, along with information suggesting that the device is running an operating system known as iOS 7.
Developers reported a similar occurrence last year with Apple's iPhone 5, noticing a number of references to the flagship device months before it was officially unveiled.
Whilst the data can be faked, previous instances would suggest the data is legitimate since the location information and identifier are identical to that of previous iPhone prototypes, all of which were tested in Cupertino, California, the location of Apple's HQ.
If it remains true to its past routines, Apple will likely announce iOS 7 during the summer at its WWDC event, with an iPhone 6 unveil to follow in the autumn.
iOS 7 is set to be a key release for Apple as it will be the first OS produced with hardware designer Jonny Ives at the helm, who recently took charge of software design.
