Both iPhones have attracted less market share than the iPhone 5 following release.
Both new iPhone models have gained Apple an impressive amount of market share from the date of its release. However has not yet lived up to the results following the release of the iPhone 5, reveals Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
The iPhone 5S is the better performing out of the two, selling three times that of the 5C. It’s not just sales numbers separating the two iDevices either – Apple’s first venture out of the high-end handset realm, has attracted new custom, broadening its device audience.
The iPhone 5C - being the ‘cheaper’ of the two smartphones - has given households with smaller incomes the opportunity to try out the device.
42 per cent of owners of the plastic iPhone earn less than $49,000 compared with just 21 per cent for iPhone 5S. They also tend to be a little older; with an average age of 38 years old compared to 34 years old for the 5S.
It has also been revealed that more than half of 5C owners switched from a competing brand, with the two main rivals being Samsung and LG.
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “The new releases have led to spectacular results in certain markets. In Japan, where the iPhone is now available via the country’s largest carrier NTT DoCoMo, Apple’s share hit 76.1 per cent during October.
“In the US, Apple’s October share reached 52.8 per cent. Mainland Europe remains more challenging for iOS, particularly markets like Italy and Germany where handsets subsides are far lower.
“Britain is more positive; iOS sales share is now at 28.7 per cent for the last three months, with sales driven by the higher-end 5S model, which has outsold the 5C by three to one since their release.”
Who knows what the next iPhone might bring. Smartphone users tend to be more interested in full releases rather than updates, explaining why the iPhone 5 experienced stronger sales than the two new devices - meaning that Apple will have to pull something fresh out the bag to keep the ever growing gang of iFans happy.
