Apple's iPhone 5 will not be a mere update of the iPhone 4, but a new device with a 'radical' new design, according to new reports.
If you're familiar with Apple's iteration trends for the iPhone, you might expect nothing more than an 'iPhone 4S' - a device identical in appearance to iPhone 4 but with a boost in processing power in the same vein as the iPhone 3GS.
It's reported that some developers have access to such a '4S' device - but according to BGR, iPhone customers will see commercially will be something more "radical". Citing a 'reliable source', the site claims the iPhone 5 will sport a "radical new case design".
It's generally believed that Apple will reveal the next iPhone at its annual September event, usually focused on iPod, but BGR's source says Apple may hold an event in 'beginning or middle' of August, with a release in late August.
The site received no further info on the phone's specs or appearance, but pointed to the mock image above created today by website thisismynext reportedly based on a sketch provided to them by a source.
According to that report, Apple is doing "interesting things" with bonded glass technology that will allow them to stretch the screen to the very outer limits of the unit, resulting in little-to-no surrounding bezel. This will reported bump the screen size to 3.7 inches from iPhone 4's 3.5 inches, while maintaining the same overall unit dimensions.
It'll apparently also keep the same resolution, and would therefore drop the pixel density down from 326ppi (pixels per inch) to 312 - anything over 300ppi maintains Apple's 'Retina display' attribute.
The report even says Apple has been experimenting with earpieces and sensors that somehow work from behind the display, which would allow the screen to occupy the entire front of the device, although that would appear more farfetched for a device due out within months.
As you can see from the mock-up, it also says the Home button will be enlarged and may double up as a gesture area for enhanced gesture-based controls (a feature apparently "definitely" coming to a future version of iOS).
That's one full rumours board. Expect it to get noisier as the phone's imminent release approaches.
