Warner Bros screams 'you shall not pass,' as fake Hobbit wallpaper hits Android.
Hollywood movie studios Warner Bros, Disney, Marvel, Sony, and Paramount are among those affected by copyright infringement on Google Play, as third party developers unlawfully produce film apps without securing authorisation.
Indeed, Reuters reports that WB recently issued Google with a 'take down' notice after realising a developer launched an unofficial Hobbit 3D Wallpaper HD app, which featured images from the film, on Google Play.
Other pirate film apps include Clash of the Titans, Spider-Man and Green Lantern, while TV shows Glee and Gossip Girl have been infringed too.
Reggie Pierce, CEO of IP Lasso, which monitors brands on mobile apps, said: "We have spoken with studios that represent several of the properties and they are actively monitoring unlicensed mobile apps.
"With the rise of the second screen comes a new band of villains who pose a serious threat to the entertainment industry's move to mobile. Consumers have been led to believe if an app is available through iTunes or Google Play, then it must be safe."
Movie apps are a big business and recent developments have seen DreamWorks enlist Rovio to produce The Croods mobile game, while Gameloft has been selected for Despicable Me 2 by Universal.
