The company has announced it has agreed to acquire security technology firm AuthenTec for $356 million.
AuthenTec deals with data and content protection, producing a number of products including fingerprint scanner technology, contactless payment systems and identity protection software.
The company has previously worked with a number of big name hardware producers, including Samsung, Lenovo, LG, Nokia and Motorola.
The move would indicate that Apple is looking to increase it's mobile protection and security measures, just weeks after it wasreported that the company silently removed a statement from its website that claimed Macs were immune to PC viruses.
As part of its 'Why you'll love a Mac' section of its site, a statement from the company previously read "It doesn't get PC viruses."
However, this was silently changed to "It's built to be safe".
It's no surprise that the company is looking to increase its presence within the mobile security sector, with the number of mobile malware, viruses and other threats currently in circulation, matched with the popularity of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.
