EDIT: Rovio chief executive Mikael Hed has since told Reuters that in fact it will be developing a Windows Phone 7 version of Angry Birds Space.
Angry Birds Space won't be released on Windows Phone, developer Rovio has said, because the returns on offer from what the Finnish Studio describes as a "smaller platform" wouldn't justify the work required.
Speaking to Bloomberg, CMO Peter Vesterbacka said: "We're the number one app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application.
"If you look at activations, Apple's iOS and [Google's] Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone, it's a lot of work to technically support it."
Bad news for Microsoft, then, and even worse for Nokia, which has pinned its hopes of revival on Windows Phone, which ships on its entire range of handsets. Vesterbacka expects Space to push theAngry Birds series past a billion lifetime downloads in the next few months, and two billion by the end of the year; on iPhone, it's already replaced Draw Something at the summit of the Top Paid and Top Grossing charts.
