Android ICS upgrade woes for Nexus owners

Google has put the brakes on a software upgrade for Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus smartphones to the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich following reports of unusually high battery usage.

While many owners of the Google Nexus S have already received the update, the internet giant has apparently paused rolling out the upgrade.

Google Community Manager Paul Wilcox said that the update was being "paused" while the firm continued to "monitor feedback", presumably into the many reports surfacing of very high battery drain.

Even though the recently released Galaxy Nexus superphone shipped with Android 4.0, a minor update to Android 4.0.3 has also resulted in many reports of very high CPU consumption even with no applications installed and the phone in 'airplane mode'.

An Android bug filed has 764 people 'starring' the issue and a great many possible explanations have appeared on enthusiast forums such as XDA Dev and Android Central conducted their own investigation.

For now though, it seems Nexus S owners will need to wait and those unfortunate enough to be experiencing the battery drain issue will be anxiously awaiting a fix.
