Apple is miles behind with 19 per cent.
Android is storming ahead as the most used operating system in Europe, answering for 68.5 per cent of all smartphones in the three months leading up to January, reports Kantar.
Although Windows remains the fastest growing European OS, it still only owns 10.1 per cent of the market, compared to Apple who are in second place with 19 per cent, still a fair distance from Android.
Windows market share is being largely driven by the popularity of the Nokia Lumia 520 which was the fourth highest selling handset in Britain over the last three months, just behind the Apple 5C.
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “Nokia has continued its successful tactic of sucking up remaining feature phone owners across Europe. Even in Britain, where smartphone penetration is at 70 per cent, there are over 14 million feature phone consumers for it to target.
Despite previous disappointing results, Apple’s iPhone 5C has finally started to take off. In the first few months since the launch, the iPhone 5S outsold the 5C three to one, however the cheaper device is gaining momentum and has now reduced that ratio, two to one.
Women are the biggest 5C fans, with 74 per cent of British 5C buyers being female, compared to 36 per cent for the 5S.
5S users are however more engages with their phones, particularly for heavy data usage.
