Throwing it against a wall, dropping it down the loo and driving over it are prime methods.
New research from comparison site GoodMobilePhones shows over a third of the UK has purposely damaged their phone in order to upgrade early.
It's probably not so surprising, given that most UK operators tie subscribers into a two-year contract, by which time the user may well have had enough of their device.
However, just 12 per cent of those that had damaged their phone intentionally successfully received an early upgrade, demonstrating a solid reluctance of networks willingly parting with devices ahead of schedule. That, of course, means 88 per cent are left with a broken handset, unless they buy their own upgrade.
43 per cent chose to through their phone against a wall to achieve destruction, while 28 per cent elected to dropping it in the toilet.
Additionally, 18 per cent went to the extreme of driving over their phone, as other answers including jumping on it and putting it for a spin in the washing machine.
