Core console gamers most likely to flirt with different platforms.
The NPD Group's Gamer Segmentation 2013 report finds that 29 per cent of American gamers fit into the free and mobile gamer bracket, a two per cent increase on 2012.
Aside from the aforementioned small screen segment, 'avid omni gamers' – those who frequently play multiple titles on different devices – was the only other group to experience growth and rose to account for 16 per cent.
Meanwhile, casual gamer, core console gamer, family gamer and social gamer segments remained unchanged or decreased on 2012. The data shows that core console gamers are the most likely to use different devices, averaging at five, while they're also the most likely to pay for digital content.
Liam Callahan, industry analyst, The NPD Group, said: "Growth among both the Free & Mobile Gamer and Avid Omni Gamer segments speaks to the different types of gamer personalities, the type of experiences they are looking for and the growing opportunities provided by different gaming capable devices."
